Obtaurian
So, Runescape rules should only apply to SOME people, not everyone. Right... I don't see any discussion value, unless you're trying discuss ways to have people PROVE that they're adults. Unless you can divide by zero, it can't be done. To put it bluntly, [bleep] off. Ginger_Warrior
This sort of idea could work on a place like Tip.It whose moderators and admins are constantly monitoring the conversations that take place and where the sense of a united community where people act with responsibility towards each other is strong. RuneScape is anything but this however. Its community is severely disjointed and aside from its P-Mods, Jagex really doesn't have a clue what conversation takes place on its game. It's a nice idea in principle, but I can't see this ever working on RuneScape. | Favourite Game Music | Last.fm | HYT Friend Chat Rules |
AlexDT
Wow, that's odd. I frequently have conversations with people of equal maturity, and we never seem to have any difficulty communicating. Perhaps you need to expand your vocabulary, or at least realise that it's possible to express yourself without swearing. Also, when asking for the sort of personal details mentioned in the start of the original post, some tact is usually required. Don't use public chat, pm the person you're asking. And make sure you already know them well, and are sure that they won't report you. I think I'd still use the kiddy servers, to be honest.
RSBDavid
I agree that there should be more mature based worlds. But I know it won't happen. It is nearly impossible to see if a user is lying about his or her age. If these "Mature" servers were to be released, any kid under the age of 18 could lie about his or her age, see something offensive, and then create a lawsuit. I know adults who are as mature as a new born baby, and I also know 12 year olds who are very mature. Age is not a good descrimination of maturity is what I am saying in that point. If a user does not like the rules of the game's chat system, then he or she can use a service like IRC, MSN, Yahoo, or any other messenger/chat system. When I am on f2p I keep most of my chats to off. That is die to the fact of massive amounts of spam I get from lower levels asking for advice and money. It can be overwhelming at some points. :wall: [software Engineer] - [Ability Bar Suggestion] - [Gaming Enthusiast]

Revenga
- Age doesn't always represent maturity. - The whole concept would be too easy to bypass. - If they where going to implement anything similiar to that, I suggest an option on the Runescape website that you can disable your filter for language. ( Don't say.. OMGTHISISRUNESCAPENOTWARCRAFTNOOB ) but I believe World of Warcraft does handle this situation well, make it toggle-able, that way if you fancy you can say whatever you like, but if your young you can keep it on. Obviously things like spamming, being racist, or anything else profound can result in trouble, but you can't be reported for refering to a website, saying bad words, stating adresses/ect. And in my opinion if your stupid enough to get e-stalked on the internet and hand out your adress/phone number, you deserve it. I was never that stupid as a child :wall: I'm a firm believer of this " Runescape is 13+, start acting like it" thing. |Msg me me in-game | IrreIephant| ^ capital i
Fromfirst2Last1987
Won't work because of Age Discrimination. Kids can easily say they're 18 when the make a new account. Criminals can go on there and plot. I do see the point, no "Wanna be mods", but the cons outweigh the pros. what do you call buying cigarettes, buying alcohol, buying mature rated games. the easiest way to do this is only allow credit card players whose name on account matches the name on the card. The Observer
As an adult and a parent, I appreciate that this is such an age diverse community, and yet family/kid safe. I'd like it to stay that way. If I want adult content, I can find it all too easily elsewhere. I don't have to have it here. Agreed. I would rather Runescape didn't have adults only servers. I cannot imagine how the conversation would be on there what with kids getting in and just the general maturity level even of the older players. I agree, age doesn't mean maturity. That's why there are so many people in our prisons. ;)
magmaguard3
It will work if jagex finds a foolproof way to block children out. It would need an identification of some sort to check you're legally the age (eg social security number, full name, etc) or settle with a compromise and take everyone who have credit cards(since you need to be 18+), kids can still use their parent's, but obviously have to ask the parent's permission, and getting through the proccess without the parents noticing their kid is signing up for something 18+ is unlikely. So yeah, it's absolutely feasible. I agree with Highlander! /\/\/\/\/\

Shazarabbit
[hide=]My opinion is if you want an adult chat, go to an adult chat room. For Jagex to keep kids as safe as possible they must to everything they can to limit them. At the same time keeping the adults happy. Why would there need to be adult worlds? Using profanity doesn't make you an adult. As a matter of fact very few adults use profanity all the time. I can't see a reason why this would be beneficial to the game, putting the age filtering method to one side. How does offensive/sexual/racist language make the/any game better? I'm an adult and I think I'm just a little bit offended. I am not sure why I'm getting the impression that a lot of people think that those who would prefer to have the option of an adult-only world would want it simply so that they could go around swearing at each other and talking dirty. There are legitimate reasons why someone might prefer to play in an adult-only world. I realize it is not going to happen and I can appreciate why. Still, that does not make a desire to have one somehow wrong. I personally am a little tired of meeting people in the game who assume I'm a teenager. Even worse, I dread being asked how old I am because I'm often met with, "OMG get a life!" or worse, "you perv!" I can also tell you I often feel a bit odd when I'm say, fishing, and the conversation going on around me is all about AP tests or getting a driver's license, or whatever it is that someone's mom won't let them do..... Yes, I do have adult in-game friends and I do mostly talk to them. However, I can see the appeal of a world where everyone is an adult (assuming that there is a way Jagex can verify age that is more reliable than self reporting. To the people who say "how does it make the game better using profanities/racism etc." well to me that is nothing like what I would want an adult world for... I live in constant fear of some one I may not even be speaking with picking up on something I say and me getting banned from it, I have neva had a black mark so I am doing ok but I wish so often I cud ask some one where they were from or how old they were, (all common questions IRL when you first meet some-one)... I fully understand the dangers on the internet and why kids are protected from this sort of thing but for me that is why I think an Adult World would be good...[/hide] I understand what you are saying, i too am an adult admittedly I have no children or anything, but if you look through this thread majority of the answers even specify it is to simply remove the filter, and i do repeat myself when i ask what difference is there playing on an adult world and a regular world if the filter didn't come into it? Gugge
Adult or not, I see absolutly no reason to speak to strangers about personal details, in game or in real life. Adult or not, maturity is absolutly not age related, a 13-year old can sometimes hold a more mature conversation than a 25-year old. Besides, where to draw the line for what is "adult" - it does vary over the world, and it is a multinational game. Please think before you ask a question. If you ask the right question, its much more likely you get the answer you are looking for :)

I'm sure you don't, but Jagex has no proof of anyone's intentions, and anyone can say that they won't act immature and won't stalk others. That would be even harder to track than someone's age. If everyone in this world was mature and didn't have bad intentions, this would work perfectly, and every world could be censor and rule free. But this isn't Utopia. ~ W ~
Silver_Corner
^ Agreed. Just because most everyone has good intentions, dosen't mean everyone does. There may only be 1 stalker/bad guy out of 10,000 people that play, but because of that 1 guy, we all have to have the restriction. Also, the fact there would be no 100% proof way to confirm someone is of age. I could see the situation comming up where Person A and B talk and get to know eachother, but Person A is bad and wants person B. Person A offers to pay for person B's membership. Now B is considered 18+ since she/he has person A's information on file. A situation like this could easily slip through the filter and Jagex wouldnt even notice, and could be held responsible for doing so. So while it may be 'useless' to some people, its not, as it is necessary to protect everyones safety. Think of it like this. In the world, would you want to remove all the stop signs at every intersection? Sure most people would still follow the rules stopping and watching for traffic, but there are the few who wouldnt, and will cause crashes, and potentially kill someone. And who is responsible for the death/crash? Its the government for not having the signs there in the first place. So who is responsible for anything that happens involving the game? Jagex. They do it to protect us, and their own company. No matter how annoying it may be. Not everyone has good intentions.

Cause that's how Sirhemen rolls. The idea of an adult only server has been shot down a long time ago, and Jagex has said it's never coming out (Look on the "do not suggest" list) The beauty of what Tip.It forums has become, where a person can't make a suggestion without the whole community shooting them down. Truely Marvelous. Although this idea probably won't be implemented, it is an ok one, but seeing as the Internet is a web of lies, every 12 year old in the game will just say their 18... highlanders
It's annoying how people KEEP posting "OMGZ THE KIDS WILL ABLE TO LIE ABUT THEIR AGE AND SAY THEIR 18!!!!!!" I ALREADY explained in the thread how to stop kids from entering. READ people. And the benefit is that you get rid of all the idiotic little kids, and end up with a mature community. And NO, people won't start swearing like no tomorrow. If you've noticed, it's the preteens and teenagers who thinks it's "cool" to swear. AND you don't have to take down the filter, simply slim it down. And tadaa, you've got a decent community, which takes care of the #1 problem with RS. britonlongbow
This idea is ridiculous on so many levels First the majority of the players in this game are under 18 get used to it. If you want to be "cool adults" and curse people out go to a bar Second if you start segregating worlds to an "age" what will stop some-one from wanting worlds that can be only accessed by a certain country because their country is "more mature". Third Jagex would never guarantee the authenticity of the worlds by asking for a ss number. With the rate of identity theft who would be handing out their ss number to be in the "adult" world ? You then have the exact same problem of kids on those worlds except now they have more opportunity to be jerks or give away personal details . And yeah, I used caps because EVERYONE in this thread except ONE person, has been posting the same nonsense over and over. READ people. I strongly disagree with this statement. Just because some-one is older doesn't mean that they are less inclined to swear or be immature. If you haven't noticed most pedophiles are adults
