The futures bright, The futures F2P?

Featured Replies

Okay so recent there was topic on whether or not the Rc guild would be F2p and if you read it the majoirity of people said they doubted it, simply due to the vast amount of content f2p had received lately. The majority of people (myself included) got owned. (Rarex must be having a field day )

This seemed pretty strange to me for F2p to get the guild, as how someone mentioned they havent had a guild in 5 years and Rc is also a predomenently P2p skill. The number of updates F2p has received lately has also been quite large, with things like the duel arena, FoG, a new achievement diary, graphical updates. Its looks to be a good time to be F2p.

So it got me think is this just a good period for F2p or has jagex shifted some recources towards making more content for F2p. It does make sense as after the new graphic there does seem to be a push for new gamers, so maybe the new F2p content is a way of bringing them in?

So is this recent stint of F2p updates random or is it a push by jagex to get some new players or is it something else entirely?

If its not random the futures looking bright for F2Pers everywhere 8-)

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.

Hmm, well everyone has to remember that P2P gets lots more benefits than F2P. Yes, F2P players have been having more updates than usual, but that's nothing to complain about. They're not taking away things from P2P and making them F2P only.

P.S. Congratulations on the 13,000th topic in General Discussion. ;)

Maybe because they lost lots of players to the Wilderness updates they're trying to bring in new ones with better and more FTP content? It would seem the logical thing to do because it will attract more potential PTP players and bring in more money.

Most of these updates are either to compensate for the December updates (PvP mini-games), to help players be safer so parents will allow their children to play (the two Strongholds) or just an advertisement of members (gnomecopters, HD with no Fullscreen).

Jagex isn't doing this because they love F2P, but because they don't want to loose any potential members, but keep people playing long enough for Jagex to lure them to P2P.

I wasn't expecting the RC guild to be available in freeplay, but I've stated that it would have many pros if it was. I think this is maybe Jagex just trying to get people to train the skill, so maybe the runes that F2Pers make would get used by members who would rather buy than make them.

It's really not that big of a deal. Those 'big' updates you listed for f2p weren't all that big.

Duel Arena wasn't a very big update at all, since p2pers had all but abandoned it, due to the trade/stake limit. It isn't all that popular in f2p either.

FoG was just an attempt to replace the wild.

Graphical updates - I don't even know if it was possible for Jagex to program new game graphics for just p2p, and not f2p.

etc etc etc

Even though it's in Jagex's best interests to occasionally update f2p (attract new players, new players get p2p) p2p will still get many more, many better updates that f2p won't get, so don't lose hope, members #-o

I'm willing to believe that it's just Jagex being generous again. Like others, I was one that severely doubted that the guild would be made available to freeplay, but in reality, what are they getting? Just a guild, nothing to be in a tizzy over.

Jagex has always been kind/generous to the freeplayers. I don't think that this update was kissing up to them in any way, nor do I believe that this was an update to suffice for the past [read] updates.

...Alright, the Elf City update lured me back to RS over a year ago.

So it got me think is this just a good period for F2p or has jagex shifted some recources towards making more content for F2p. It does make sense as after the new graphic there does seem to be a push for new gamers, so maybe the new F2p content is a way of bringing them in?

I have a theory, in recent days Jagex has added popups and movie ads and made it so adblocking software doesn't work correctly on the RuneScape website without modifications, I believe Jagex is placing more ads on F2p so they can scrap up money to add content that F2p can use, you do have to remember F2p gives Jagex revenue through ads and I think Jagex is finally catching on that there are people who wont buy membership no matter what they do so they've decided to try to keep those players playing longer, getting more ad views and revenue.

I don't believe there's much more too it.

Now, yes, F2P has gotten quite a bit of content recently, but I think Jagex has relaxed a bit and in a giving mood. It could perhaps be teasers for f2p, just to give them of a taste.

EDIT: The above theory is a possibility. They're a business, afterall.

I think they finally realised that this game and everybody will quit eventually, and so they are taking the first steps to making this game a self-sustaining free online game.

You're being watched.

FTP gets a couple of updates, people moan, OMG FTP IS COMING TO GET US, no, p2p remains and that's probably how it's going to stay. It'll be made up for soon, it usually is.

Now if ftp had gotten gwd or something... Instead a guild & some lame stuff over the months that members wouldn't appreciate as much.

I have no intrest in helping "keyers" farm xp.

They probably made the guild f2p as 50rc is a lot easier to get on p2p compared to f2p, so f2pers might decide to become p2p to get easier rc levels and then decide to like it and stay p2p longer.

And besides, it's jsut a guild, not a whole new skill.

Maybe because they lost lots of players to the Wilderness updates they're trying to bring in new ones with better and more FTP content? It would seem the logical thing to do because it will attract more potential PTP players and bring in more money.

Exactly what I was thinking - with the wilderness long gone they need stable new media to entice people to start playing, keep playing, and ultimately upgrade to p2p.

I think they finally realised that this game su(ks and everybody will quit eventually, and so they are taking the first steps to making this game a self-sustaining free online game.

It already is a self sustaining free online game, the advertising revenues equal the server costs, they break even with f2p. Are you trying to make a point or just want to ignite a flame war? Oh, and 'sucks' isn't censored here.

I must admit, that was a pretty radical move on Jagex's part, looking at their f2p update history. To answer your question:

Is this just a good period for F2p or has jagex shifted some recources towards making more content for F2p?

Both. But you don't need a separate team of designers to cater to f2pers, so they've shifted the updates, not their actual resources.

Lol, I didn't get "owned". I just haven't replied to any of the people who think F2P won't get it because I won't change their opinion because they are too stubborn or ignorant.

All those who are saying "F2P is getting tons of updated! stop asking for more!!": Are you stupid or mentally screwed? I assume both. F2P has gotten around 14 updates since 2006. Excluding the interface updates which were for the whole game. Now, how many has p2p gotten? Hundreds!

14 updates aren't that much.. those 14 include: 2 new dungeons, 4 (or 5 if new RC mini-game is f2p, dunno) mini-games, 1 achievement diary, the RC guild.. and a few others

nice brain those who say f2p is getting loads =\. compare it to p2p updates, 14 updates doesnt compare to the hundreds you dudes get.

Would you guys drop this already? Seriously. It's 9 months later, this is starting to be ridiculously pathetic.

Any company, any video game wants MORE PLAYERS, despite any updates or players quitting or players coming into the game.

FTP got the Rune crafting guild because Jagex decided they should. Maybe it's the last of the recent FTP updates, maybe there's more to come.

Personally, I think ofrah's theory is the correct one.

highly doubt it.

Think about it, if Jagex was wanting to market towards new players why do it with a guild alot of the f2p players can't even access. Either they were pushing for players who have constantly played f2p and never moved up to p2p. Not to mention f2p was just so different from p2p. I remember when I first got members I was like wtf do I do. There was just so much. It was almost another game to me, I think they are giving f2p a better feel of what p2p is. And I think f2p is going to continue to get updates for awhile, until numbers in the server build back up again. (Seems rather empty to me, maybe it's just because of more worlds?) I think Rarex works for Jagex :ohnoes:

Sorry but they have a pretty good point. I never did pvp much, but it was one of the most widely used things in f2p. And it was hella fun when I went out and did it with friends because at most you would lose maybe 200k? Alot of people left after that they found out the wildy was gone and wasn't coming back. (But I do agree it had to be done. And so far nothing has replaced it just yet.)

i dont think it's a big deal. if you have 50 runecrafting in f2p, and the ability to get a membership; i'd think you would want to make the best runes; so you might join because of that;

runecrafting is still very limited on f2p, making the guild f2p seems reasonable. tbh i always thought guilds should be f2p and p2p but for different reasons they arent but i still think things like the mage guild should be... but whatever.

basically, this may get more people excited about runecrafting and f2p still has severe limits on the skill so, i think this helps to balance it more for the free worlds really. get some cool gear; tabs; but still only able to make certain runes; so join members seems like a natural progression. :P

it'd be nice if people didnt put jagex under the microscope everytime they update the game. members should realise that improving f2p can, and often does, help the game. but i wouldnt expect people with limited vision to recognise that. if i were f2p i'd be excited about runecrafting. :)

I do believe that is why they update the game. In general.

This topic takes into account the fact that seemingly more content is being released for f2p, it's not about updates in general. Regarding my idea, I took into account the current context of RS - including (but not limited to) things such as the timing of these updates and the atmosphere of post-wilderness RS. Fist of Guthix and the Runecrafting Guild are arguably the first two decent, non-essential updates provided to f2p since, heck, probably before the release of rs2.

Obviously they'll always be trying to gain more players; I wasn't suggesting that Jagex is trying to directly replace the revenue stream lost by people quitting due to the removal of the wilderness, but rather that they are trying to restructure that certain "I'll go here for a change of pace" niche that the wilderness provided for those players who wanted to break the monotony of f2p. Even the new achievement diary fits in along the lines of "something interesting to do". Both of the updates I am specifically talking about (FoG & RC Guild) incorporate player-versus-player minigames; I don't think it's too far of a stretch to at least conceive the idea that these updates are intended as partial surrogates for the wilderness in terms of a "change of pace" experience amongst f2pers.

I'm not saying that Jagex would ever think that these updates are sufficient to replace the wilderness, either: they're simply a replacement for the resource the wilderness provided players as a (possibly) exciting alternative to skilling. Jagex simply trying to diversify their f2p offerings is a reasonable explanation, yes, but it doesn't take into account the relatively short time span in which many of these updates have been implemented. Jagex has historically been very frugal in doling out updates to f2p, so I cannot write this off as a random act of concentrated benevolence towards f2p from Jagex.

So True! =D> So what if F2p gets an update? Quite a few members I see love to have f2p do all of their little tasks for them like Woodcutting or Fishing.

No, it is not that is why I am getting members in a few weeks...I just have to get a decent Rune craft level.

Loi86.png

I think they are doing this because Runescape is trying to encourage more members, so of course add more stuff to f2p, they get higher levels to get guild, see how much fun it looks, bam they get members.

Retired from Runescape September 1, 2008

aslong as its not every month its happening then its fine with me, if it is i may aswell go f2p and enjoy updates there and save money lmao, but yeah i think theyre trying to keep the game fresh for everyone, they realise its summer and they want everyone to have "fun in the sun"

smellysockssigbyblfazer.png

Jagex is probably just making up for the wilderness and trade changes, as those really f2p, still, i'm not sure if they deserved to much equipment.

Oh well, more random people running around with an oversized shield and wearing funny robes with an odd looking staff!
