pryomancer
The newest version of the Creative Suite series from Adobe is out- CS4. I must say, (focusing on Photoshop since this is the most used) the new features look amazing. What's new in PhotoShop CS4? The best ones: Workflow Changes In older versions, the image manipulation was process is mainly selecting a filter/adjustment, fiddling with the settings and applying it. With this new system in CS4, you can grab all the adjustments you want to make and mess around with them, with the overall effect being applied to the image dynamically. This makes it a lot easier to manipulate images in one large step, and non-destructively as well. Share My Screen This is great. You can opt to share your screen view of PhotoShop with up to three other people. Sharing webcam, screen, microphone and whiteboard will be very useful for dealing with clients and liasing with other designers. A very good professional tool. CS4 Extended Version 3D Editing PhotoShop CS4 Extended now offers the ability to edit 3D images "just as easily as they have traditionally been able to work with 2D pictures". PhotoShop CS4 has a new ray-tracing engine which allows lighting, materials and cameras to be edited within the program. This is a huge step for PhotoShop, towards ultimate usability. Enhanced Motion Graphics PhotoShop CS4 Extended now enables the handling of motion-based images. This includes working with non-square pixels, audio that comes with the image, and even able to animate 3D objects and adjust camera positions. Overall, I think the update to CS4 has been the most radical and innovative one yet. The 3D and 'smart' features give PhotoShop the edge over the free image editing programmes like GIMP and Paint.net, which a lot of people have turned to. Of course the previous versions have still offered more usability than the free programmes, but the 3D editing capabilities just put CS4 on a whole different level compared to the other CS versions. woopidoo2
CS4.. Im sure it has cool new features and all that, but seriously. Do you need them while you have CS3? (Not aimed at anyone.) tripsis
CS4.. Im sure it has cool new features and all that, but seriously. Do you need them while you have CS3? (Not aimed at anyone.) I felt that way about CS2 -> CS3 (I have CS2). But I do feel like CS4 has a lot of new, notable features. It all depends on what you use PhotoShop for.. the program can be used for SO many different things and I find it rare that you find many people who use every single thing the program has to offer and to its full potential. Anyway I definitely think that the "Share My Screen" feature sounds awesome. I don't think I'd use any of the other features (or even "Share My Screen" much), but for people who are into those things (like 3D images/motion images), I can see it being an awesome feature. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

Being able to paint right onto the 3D model sounds incredible for what I'm doing, and I wouldn't have to bother with getting ZBrush or anything like that. :P
dsavi
I sue both Gimp and PS, but I'm not going to upgrade until maybe CS5. I've been using Gimp moar, I haven't started up Windows in about a month.
pryomancer
I think if you're planning to go into a career with computer graphics, or anything related to that industry, you shouldn't be using anything else but Photoshop. You'd never find a job description asking for experience with GIMP. If you're an amateur user just interested in the odd photo retouch, then GIMP is perfect. Jopie211
^ Honestly though, if you have some good experience with Gimp/graphic work in general you really shouldn't have too much trouble converting that knowledge to PS if you do decide to go professional at a later stage. I think it wouldn't take even me too long to get used to PS completely, and I'm definitely not the most experienced person around here. pixel avvy by me deviantART
Estonian dude
Yeah, you can use PS tutorials for GIMP, only things are named differently. There aren't any big differences. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. The Suite includes Illustrator. OP is just focusing on Photoshop because it's the most commonly used I don't plan on getting CS4. I've got CS3 and it's good enough for me. Although I don't like PS CS3 as much as CS2, I love Illustrator CS3. Internet Marketing For Newbies

venomai
I find it a bit excessive that they need to add 3D and animation capabilities to a photo editing tool. 'Content Aware Scaling' is perhaps the most interesting feature in the new release. The quick brush resizing will also be useful. Otherwise, the extra junk is not worth my money and hard drive space. Dharockslayer
Heh, Ill just use my CS3 thanks. The Graphic school I am currently on uses only outdated versions from 2003-4. If I get CS4 they might not be able to keep up, again. Interrested in joining the cabbagy madness? malo2
Fluid Canvas Rotation the option to rotate the canvas non-destructively to any angle using the new Rotate View tool from the Application Bar or under the Hand tool in the toolbar.Does this mean the pixels don't get blurred when rotating an image? If so then I really need CS4 for my pixel work :o and over all, there are some great features in here. I'm also surprised by the number of people who pay for photoshop... Star.
I'll probably just get it because it's photoshop. I don't use cs3 to it's full extent so I think I can say cs4 won't be any more useful to me. Plus, no loss of money. ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢ CAUTION ☢
