Quests - Guide or freestyle?

I prefer trying to do quests on my own. Using a guide for every single step before you even try to do it yourself just sucks the fun out of the whole thing. And isn't that what quests are supposed to be? A fun challenge for players?

I only consult a guide if I'm stuck on a particular part of the quest.

I guess that means I'm the thread Terminator?

I use guides only to see what I need. What I don't like doing is spending half an hour getting thru some complex maze only to find out I need a bucket or something lame. I enjoy quests and always read the story and watch the cutscenes. If i've been struggling on a part of the quest for an hour or so i will probably get fed up and check the guide then too.

Back in the RSC days I did the majority of the quests using a guide, the few quests I did do without a guide ended up being ones that involved Mahjarrat (hence my obsession of them!).

Since RS2 I've only used guides for Monkey Madness, Legends Quest and Mourning's End Part 1, everything else I've done myself or in the case of Mourning's End Part 2, stayed up for hours on end with my mates running around in circles trying to solve it - that one quest alone, although difficult to crack and wasted a lot of my time was one of my most memorable moments and it wouldn't of been the case if I used a guide.

Guides destroy the sense of achievement for me, I love plot lines in RS, using guides would probably detract from them for me, I'm not against other people using guides though, it's understandable some people are just for the rewards and that it also cuts down on a lot of time wasted that could be used to focus on other (better) things.

depends on the quest.

underground pass and mourning ends part2 would take me ages to complete without a guide, but some quest you feel like you need to compleet them alone (desert treasure, rfd, cokos assistant)

so i would say this:

if you like hearing the storylines, dont use guide, or atr least read the dialogues.

if you just want the reward, use guides and skip the talks..

Think I did 1-2 quests without one on the day they came out, like Regicide on my old main, but on this character I always use a guide.

I don't know how many times, even with a guide, that I've overlooked an item. Then, when I'm half way through the quest and at a critical point... #-o DOH! Tele out to go get it...frustrating.

OFF TOPIC: To be honest, when I first saw this thread, I was sure that the first post was going to get blasted to hell because the author said he uses guides. I'm very proud of the responses to this thread. Very mature with not a single attack of another's point of view on how to play the game. It's almost a rare sight. Also, to anyone that has figured out these quests on your own...BRAVO! =D> Sometimes, the logic of the quests throw me for a major loop. Not to mention the shear frustration of trial and error in tough areas (those that took the time to deal with MEP2 Light Maze and figured it out for the rest of us...again, BRAVO! =D> I've also noticed that I do the new quests the day they come out. Its kinda fun problem-solving with a team. Team questing is somewhat rare except for new quests. Even then its still a lot of every man for himself mode.

Usually, I try to do new quests on the first day of release. If I get too stuck to continue or too frustrated at how something that should be working isn't, I wait for a guide.

Otherwise, I just can't resist the urge to use a guide that has been so lovingly prepared <3:

I use a quide almost all the time because I'm mainly interested in the rewards, and I also like being efficient. Although, when there are puzzles in the quest, I usually try to solve them on my own because I think it's fun.

I think that the guides should be available, since there are many people who don't want to think about one thing for a very long time, as you need to do sometimes when you do quests in RS. If you don't need the guides, just don't read them.

I love the people that say I use guides because I don't enjoy quests, how can you enjoy a quest if you know whats going to happen?

just an excuse for not being able to do them..

I use guides because I don't enjoy quests. I didn't decide this having never done a quest without using a guide. I tried a few quests freestyle and found it incredibly boring - so now I use guides. To each his own!

Thanks for all the responses too BTW! I was a bit apprehensive about starting this topic as I had noticed that alot of people can get quite heated on the subject! My Nan always used to say that in all her 90+ years of life, the only true lesson she has learned is that the things you spend your life worrying about pretty much never happen. I keep taking that point on the chin recently. :)

I only do quests I need to do for a certain item, or access to an area.

I haven't done quests for fun since RSC.

Guides mostly. Only quest I've ever done without a guide was RFD, on the first day. It was hell.

I think quest guides are great for people like me who just want the storyline and rewards and don't want to spend hours trying to figure something out. I get a kick out of people who use guides and say quests aren't hard enough though... quests are plenty hard when you don't have someone else doing all the thinking for you.

I've only completed 2-3 mem quests w/o a guide, and all f2p without. The Guides make it easier, but the problem is you don't pay attention to storylines. Then when you have Myreque Part 5 comming out you'll have no idea why.

I don't think I did a quest without a guide. Well except for my very very very first one, Gertrude's cat. I think i asked around for a seasoned sardine or whatever for about like 2 hours lol. I wanted a cat so bad if I wiould have known about tip.it i would have used it right away. I could care less for storylines, ALL ABOUT THE REWARDS

imo, there are three types of people for quests

there are the romancistics of quests; people that could tell you all about runescape's history over lunch and just about every possiability in their mind about what could happen next.

there are the purists of quests; people that see quests as a series of events that will make their character richer, stronger, or in some other way better

and there are the oppourtounists of quests; people that see quests as the first time or only time to do something different, to overcome the odds, and to more or less have fun with interactivity

the romancistics dislike guides except to find a soloution to a puzzle that quite litterly stops them from a grand climax in the story. They don't like to lift a 50 pound page to keep on reading the book

the purists love guides, often reading them through a couple times before starting the quest just to figure out everything they might need to get it done quickly and efficently, and more importantly what they will get out of it. They enjoy dictionaries and encylopedias, but stories don't intrest them

the oppourtounists loathe guides, and will avoid them at all costs, instead trying again and again to figure it out on their own, and get surprised at the new found events that take place, obsticles that get in their way, and things that they can do. They won't buy the book in the first place, but will gladly read a summarry to find the general point.

As for me, purist all the way, i love to know what i am getting into and what i will get out of it. Hense the reason i completed ernest the chicken when the trade limit was brought up for f2p.

AND I USED A GUIDE!!!

Heh, those types are kind of true actually. I think I'm a romancistic, but I only ever use a guide when I've tried to kill a monster for the millionth time and I still can't hit a single hitpoint off of him, wondering if there's something special I had to do. Or something like that ;) And then I would only read the first next step, I wouldn't read till the end of the guide, because that would spoil the ending.

Due to my epic stats, I have now started WGS (but I still hate spoilers).
