is runescape still runescape?

i've been playing runescape for over 3 years (i got members just after the release of farming) and i've had a break for a few months now. I've though about coming back, but everytime i think about doing so something stops me. Over the years runescape got more updates and i found myself asking myself, is this the game i enjoyed playing so much all these years? cus with every update more/easier ways to gain experience/wealth find their way into the game. I enjoyed the way i had to train my skills, but with the release of things like Stealing Creation i just don't enjoy skilling as much as i used to (as Zezima said: I have stopped playing RuneScape competitively because it's getting progressively easier over time. With it getting easier to train skills and gain exp, I've lost a sense of accomplishment in what I've worked hard to achieve since I started in 2001. If things will continue to get easier, it ruins the game for those of us who have been here since the beginning). I was wondering if anyone else (guess this is probably for the people that play runescape since a few months before the HD update or before that) feels the same way? And how/why do you keep on playing if so?

Well lets see.

And how/why do you keep on playing if so?

I hardly care about my levels, unlike some people who train and grind over long periods of time. I don't find that fun :/

No not really. Sure it's now easier to gain more levels but that excite lower levels and makes the game just a tiny bit more enjoyable.

Stealing Creation was good exp only when it was released. Now it's just another Minigame. You could get more exp by just training the skill itself.

Well I don't know why he said it ruins the game for those who have been here since the beginning, these things are open to everyone including "them". So in reality I find it hard to see how it's unfair...

He can now compete much more faster thanks to these updates, no?

Wongton is better than me in anyway~~

If it wasn't for the fact that you ... er...how shall I say this? Translated the post, I wouldn't understand it at all. In answer to the topic's (hordes of) questions, I only train my skill for accomplishment. For example, I enjoy cooking as a skill, I level it only because I like it, not because I have to. Then again, I might train a skill for a quest I really want to do, as I'm an avid quester.

It has changed a lot since I started, but it remains to be a fun place to blow some spare time. Sure things become easier but most of the time they don't take out the old ways. You can still do the old ways like abyss runecrafting rather than graahk if you wish and that way you can feel accomplished. The best thing about Runescape is your ability to choose what you want to do whether it is sit in edgeville and chat or grind for days on end.

The biggest change I've seen in the mentality of the players from having fun and helping a fellow noob to getting that 99 and ignoring everyone who will slow you down. I sure do miss the old days back in 04-05 when you would walk around, talk to some stranger, and then he might become your best friend. Now it's 'go away noob I'm training'. O well I guess the new players know alot more with tutors and don't have to chat with players to know what to do. Seems like Jagex wants less and less player interaction. :|

It's changed so much over the years that it does feel like a different game - I stopped playing in mid '08 and came back in april '09 and it felt so different - but the core is still the same although I do miss many aspects.

for sure it's easier, but I guess we all knew that would happen one day because they didn't intend the game to be unbeatable.

Just my 2 cents

Is Runescape still Runescape? Yes. It's definatly no WoW or Diablo II or even Madden 09 on my xbox.

Did you need to hit enter a couple times and form some paragraphs for me to think about reading that? yes.

Yes it's still RuneScape, it's certainly no Call of Duty on my Xbox (spoofer just got referenced!) I think if you come back after several months and you're overwhelmed by updates and lost then well done to JaGex, they've done their job! stick around MA this week!

I'd have to say yes.

Point being that although there have been many changes, it's really still the same game. Sure you can't give your friend your partyhat, but you have the next best thing, right? Jagex has done a good job, imo.

I've lost so much of my interest in it because of how easy it is now to even gain xp in this game... Jagex really blew the game up.. RSC was so much more addictive because it was HARD to gain experience in it.. For example combat you could only gain a max of about 35K an hour, at magical axes.. Lol.... Fletching i was the 19th to get 99 and it took months because everything was done manually. ONLY ABOUT 30 PEOPLE HAD 99 FLETCHING IN 04/ 05 ONLY ABOUT 180. There is no longer any challenge in runescape its all X optioned and 100K / HR. Lame

Runescape is just a game, if you feel a sense of achievement from a game and only play it for that experience, you need a very thorough reality check.

Playing a game is something I do for fun, pass the time and somewhat "escape" reality. I don't care if everyone and his family is now making millions; I don't want to work when I'm playing, I already have a job.

I've been playing the game for about eight years now, and although some of the memories and experiences I've had in the past will always be the most enjoyable aspects of the game yet, I enjoy the game itself now much more than I did back then.

As a few people have said before me, updates like Stealing Creation and Soul Wars can always be ignored.

Runescape has been getting progressively easier from the very first day; that's why quests get progressively harder and progressively more complex skills emerge.

The only humanly possible way to give us even 1 content update a month for these year is to add more ways of doing things in and thus making it easier.

You only notice it and feel off put by it because you've quit. Look back over when you played rs and the updates did exactly the same thing.

I mean heck you dont even have to zoom back that far to a time when we didn't have all these high end bones and equally the only way to get prayer xp was to bury them or when the absolutely best elite armour in-game was black or when drops was the only way to get runestones so mage was rare, but useful.

It's nothing revolutionary or new that a game was consistent content additions gets progressively easier in time. Heck even you leveling up makes the game easier.

There is a tendency to wax poetic and romanticize old ideals. I have no doubt that the game feels completely different today than it did 5 or 6 years ago, but is that an absolutely bad thing?

There are many changes that the game -must- undergo.

  • [*:1sj3nwg7]Graphical Changes - the game has undergone a very large series of complete graphical overhauls. This changes the feel of the game entirely. While certainly they improve the game, people still reminisce to times where graphics were blocky, ugly, and slow.[*:1sj3nwg7]Game gets easier - without new elements that offer different and easier methods to train, the game would be stale.[*:1sj3nwg7]A more competitive landscape - this is a function of both the health of the game and its growth. As the game gets larger, played by more people, lower tiered accomplishments no longer carry the same prestige. While there may have been some missteps in development (99 capes come to mind!), the game is clearly steadily improving and remaining fresh.

A game without change is a dead one.

Only friends and few goals keep me playing. And when there was a clan I loved, I loved to play. I hope that clan will be alive again. There's still something old, but there's not so much people who respect old things. :(

Its not the game I started playing all those years ago (3 to 4 years ago).

Its now much easier to play and enjoy along with more competitive.

The GE made the game (IMO) more competitive and a grind fest, but also allowed you to enjoy the game quicker.

Personally I like the way its changing. I started pre farming, construction, hunter, summoning and they all added variety and tweaks to the system. Honestly don't know how I coped without summoning.

Runescape is still Runescape for me. Otherwise I wouldn't be playing this game. All things change and it is true that the game have become easier, but not so much that it have gone boring. Actually, I think that exactly the opposite has happened; The game has become more fun. With more mingames and ways of training skills the game have got more challenges and become more open. The playes have got more alternatives and can more freely chose in what they want to train their skills.

The main things in Runescape are still there, the quests, the skills and everything else. Sure, some of the achievements might not be as big as before, but I think that is a price worth all the more fun that have been added to the game. Everything changes and Jagex need to keep up with this. As an effect of that the demand of that RS shouldn't be so much grinding, Jagex have removed some parts of this. This is however as I said before just a good thing since it makes the game more varieted.

Jagex needs to do much more than adding new stuff and making the game a little easier for me to think that RS isn't RS anymore. That is at least what I think.

I acutally feel quite sorry for people who didn't play RSC and the beginning of RS2. Those were the best days for me, and those days lasted till duel arena got nerfed. It's hard to accept that the game you once loved to play has turned into a game of imaturity, greediness and many other things. And that's a shame. Runescape is what it is now, a game that has had it's best moments.

Some people dream of success, while others make it happen.

It's mostly a matter of opinion. I started playing during the last months of RSC and let's just say that playing the game back then was really tedious for me. I don't think this game has turned into immaturity and greediness, those have always been around from the name calling to the scammer attempts. Not being able to get rich in seconds from a staked duel or get a huge loan from a friend is a small price to pay to have a landscape mostly rid of macroers and gold farmers.

hmm about the wall of text, i just kept on typing whatever popped into my head, so sorry for the disorganised mess :P

i do think it's a matter of opinion, but as for me, i always liked to compete with friends, and i've always been a skiller. But ever since godwars it became so much easier to obtain large amounts of money and so much easier to level the buyable skills. i guess i miss the parts master_smither was talking about, just walk around and talk to people without getting some lame/ignoring answer...

i am a person that likes to look back to things thinking it used to be better and though i'm not a pessimist, that does give a negative shadow on how it is today or the stuff still coming.

And do i know runescape? I know how it was when i just started, I know how i used to feel like playing runescape. I haven't played it since the beginning, but i dare to say i've been playing it longer than a large part of nowadays players.

i just wanted to know if i'm the only one feeling the game is going in the wrong direction (don't all games do so?). To please everyone is to dissapoint a few.

I'm not saying i'll never play runescape again, i might try pking when i get back into it, but until then i hope they'll change a few things so runescape regains that balance it once had ^^
