If you're gonna train this way while AT the computer it sort of defeats the purpose.

Back when string ammy was a good way to train, I got 1M mage XP in a day while doing all my homework at my computer desk. All I had to do was look up at the screen and click the spell button about once a minute.

How does it defeat the purpose? User safeguards himself from any "AFK" accusations, gain effortless magic xp, all the while spending time doing other things. There's plenty of things to do on the computer/at your desk.

If it was just a stupid idea people wouldn't be crying on TIF about it.

Yep.

The point of the splash method is so you can leave it up for 8 hours without being anywhere near the computer. If you're gonna be at the computer, there's TONS of much more efficient ways of training which require barely any effort (like my example).

Or you could leave it up to 8 hours without touching your computer. As far as effort is concerned, it's still next to nothing.

Jagex only says this about AFK training:

AFK training is Away From Keyboard training. While you are playing on our games, you must be at the computer. Away-from-keyboard training is not allowed, and you should log out when you leave the computer.

One could set up the game for spider splash, close lid to laptop, set it aside (still "at the keyboard," aren't arbitrary definitions lovely?), and do whatever the hell they please. Being there simply destroys the only point of leverage that the whiners are using, if nothing else.

This is not new.

People have been splashing mage xp since RS2 started.

Some of my magic levels are from this, before some AFK spells were good exp, but Jagex nerfed it. This method used to be included in the how to train mage guides on fan sites. It's a SMART way to train magic.I have no problem with this. And no one uses this method to reach 99 magic, it's good for lower magic levels though.

Before there were randoms though so most people AFK'd but would look at their screen every 5 minutes.

It's a way to train, the xp isn't that great, and like many people said if they weren't afk there are better methods to train.

How does this method of AFK compare to the woodcutting AFKers or other skills that are AFK'd?

Runescape accomdates AFK with make-x etc. get used to it. Don't just single out mage, combat trainers do this all the time at bandits and other places.

As long as someone is not autoing I have no problem with it. I'd rather they were afk, and I don't think it's against the rules, the wording is so ambigious. And how is it fun being at the screen watching your char splash spells? There is no point.

In Darkfall, an admin will check you before you're kicked from the server for AFK-training. If you're caught doing it again, you'll be banned temporarily (Usually a few hours to a few days). Caught again, and it's a permanent ban. No appeals.

I'd like to see Jagex take this stance.

But that really would be illeagal. You can not be forced to talk to any mod if you don't like doing so. In the intrest of the company, that is not a good solution.

Omali, I too would like to see Jagex actually enforce some actual rules. I've seen plenty of people get away with some acts that are clearly against the ToS/EULA agreement, and other people get banned for simple stuff that is not even on ToS/EULA.

Ex. Glitching/botting is still extremely prevalent. Just check out the GE prices. Then, while there are autoers out their collecting my resources, an actual paying, playing member is suspended for bypassing the filter when the word wasn't even that bad.

And to xpx, if you want to see legal, I suggest you read the EULA. Think you just bought yourself a new item? Wrong. The EULA states that Jagex owns everything in your bank, inventory, PoH, etc. You're basically paying them for permission to work hard to achieve the level to use their items.

And you think it would be "illegal" for them to require an answer from us... ;)

You guys have to remember, when it comes to administrative decisions, unless you're part of the administration, you're input doesn't mean jack. All you can do is report the user and go about your business.

if this continues to grow they might have to switch back to the old randoms system :ohnoes:

I seem to recall that the *intent* of no AFK is that jagex wants your account to be secure - i.e. you leave the room to get food, and your little brother hops on the computer typing in every cuss word he knows.

If Jagex didn't like this, there are MANY different ways to fix it. They could introduce new randoms. They could have shorter auto-log outs. They could remove all low level creatures.

Personally, I'm not bothered by this. It might make mind runes worth something...

Just make all spells hit every 50th/100th cast. It's too small to help real mages but it's large enough to hurt akers who afk on low hp creatures.

the creatures do not have to be low level.... with a divine, regen brace and phoenix necklace i'm fairly sure i could afk on a level 70+ creature for 6 hours straight until my rol teleports me to safety. Using force doesn't solve this problem- it goes deep to the game engine to crack this nut.

Poop, cheating? How can you be sure? that kind of reports get yourself banned.....

Depends on the regeneneration rate of the monster in question. Don't spiders have 3 hits? I know some monsters have faster regeneration than others (like the barrows brothers)

And that is the aire of protection that AFKers rely on to continue this bullcrap.

It's not like they are criminals running from justice lol...

Tbh, looking at it this way, i would very much like to report people using cook-x to get 99 cook, fletch-x to get 99 fletch, Herblore-x, all the fishers, people using craft-x, all the woodcutters and the people using gilded altar(sorry if i left anyone out), on the basis that, when i got most of my experiance in those skills, i didn't have those methods to reckon with and see them as louzy afkers abusing the game...(or more simply put- this is not a black and white problem)

What? Those are functions that are legitimately in the game, and can be used without concern. Abusing the game's faults to your own advantage is cheating, no matter what.

I remember training with entangle or something way back when on a monk in the cage in varrock's castle...the difference there was that I had to click each time on the spell and on the monk...

To me, that's training. It certainly wasn't AFK.

What these people are doing is wrong. It doesn't involve being alert at the computer. Attacking without trying to kill isn't necessarily wrong, but there absolutely MUST be a line drawn somewhere. You can't "legislate intent", so the only thing Jagex can do is say "you must be at the computer, otherwise it's considered macroing" or something.

I say permaban these players or reset their characters...yes it's a gray area, but every time you allow something like this, you make the next questionable gaming activity more likely to be allowed...until bots and the like are back in...and the game is no longer fun for the main base of players.

If you used even a trifle of common sense you would see that acctually the two are more similar than you might guess, but the only differance is how frequently you HAVE to click, rather than if they are legit. The both methods are legit on the basis that the game gathers experiance for you while you have the commodity of time that you HAVE to(yes, no browsing forums while fishing, or you are just as bad as thos mages....) spend doing nothing. Is magic not a part of the game? Used without concern? Runescape is not a beta, so everything you can do in it is legit until proven not to be. I'd certainly class this problem together with all the other semi-afk skills... You are looking this problem one dimensionally- if a mage does no damage he is afk and thus is cheating- but in the real world noone is guilty until proven so.
