It wasn't really til the third book that the craze really caught on, yes it was a cult favourite from the get go but the major mainstream craze that makes it reference worthy did not really take off until the third book and even then it was possible to be a short-term craze and thus not reference worthy.

 

It wasn't really til the 4th book in 2000 that it became established as a long term craze and thus some parodies and references began to filter through; but most of the referencing and parody didn't really begin until the films came out and even then round about the 2nd film (2002) and the re-affirmation it was still crazy popular. by book 5 (2003), which subsequently means the status of harry potter wasn't really established enough to have references made about it until about 2002/2003. Which makes it highly unlikely that Snape Grass is a reference as I believe herblaw was released along with snape grass in about 2002 which means it prob was in production 2001

That guy is a role-player by nature, usually comes from a pen and paper background. Hes a good writer. We recruit him, and teach him how to code. What were looking for is creative minds. People who are able to create good storylines, good play elements, and then we teach them how to use the tools.

 

This is why Jagex have such great storylines, such in depth lore, and best of all, these quirky references. They take writers and artists and teach them how to transfer that creativity into the game. Truly genious in my opinion.

Jagex's game developers seem to know a lot of history and popular culture, and they like spicing up the game by adding it in. The whole Fremmenik culture is based on the vikings, including their belief system, dress, weapons, and buildings. Similarly the desert culture is based on ancient Egypt, including many of the storylines of quests that take place in the area. Ardougne also reminds of London during the plague. I think it adds a whole bunch of interesting storylines and little tidbits of knowledge to the game.

 

In addition, they have fun references too - use a herring on a tree, and you get a Monty Python reference.

Both have a powerfull item that controls the wielder, but cripples the creator to nothingness if destroyed.

Also, Glariel is a shortened version of Galadriel.

And the boss from Gnome Village quest, when it dies: a scream fading away in the distance. If you read the chapter 'The Pelenor Fields' of the book, you will recognise it from the death of the Witch-King.

I think you're logic is flawed.

Theres no proof Glariel is meant to be Galadriel, just spelling coincidence

A scream fading away in the distance is a common image used in many many many books and films, and the fact a demon does it and not a creature remotely like the Witch-King weakens the reference to be meaningless

Moria was a dwarf city yes but it was not "lost" it was on maps and everyone knew it was there, jsut not how to get in. Equally it was full of dead people as tht flame creature had been found and killed them all. Where as the lost dwarf city is still fully functional to the best of our knowledge, just sealed off by an earthquake.

 

Vague similarities do not equate to references. References are, even if subtle, outright obvious once you find them.

Well in the latest Q&A i believe mod mmg said that he was a burger king guy. Don't start with the whole well Fremmy isle where there before mod mmg was CEO.

 

Most of the ones that i know have been said already... so i won't even begin to list them, there is definitely a lot of these references and they are always funny when you see them in game unexpectedly.

No the last supper is represented by the sacrament of receiving the bread and wine which is brought up to the altar yes. But the altars in runescape represent the ones at the back of the church. (Generally 2 altars, one at the far end..... ummm East methinks it is..... and the one mid way down the church).

 

And if we're being pedantic about the prayers, piety and chivalry were commonly held beliefs by the people of the medieval period. Piety came about from crusading, donating to churches and monasteries, and pilgrimage therefore gaining God's grace and having indulgences bestowed upon you by the church decreasing your time in purgatory; so therefore it fits perfectly in with high prayer. And chivalry is the thing that's commonly portrayed as gentlemanly behaviour.
