Don't you think it's kinda lame and arrogant to have Private Chat set to 'Friends'?

Featured Replies

I think since it's so easy to just set it to friends, people do it and never turn back.

The number of pm's you receive from random strangers, at least for me, is pretty negligible.

and it's so easy to just not respond to them. I don't see the point of keeping it on friends.

what if an old RS friend i deleted by accident needs to msg me?

try turning ur private chat to on sometime and see how many unwanted im's you actually get.

(1.) They're too good/busy to talk with people who aren't on their friends list.

I don't like getting spammed by strangers who more often than not are asking for advice on stupid stuff I probably don't know/ can't remember.

(2.) They're unwilling to help anybody who might be PMing them for help with something.

There is google and the tip.it Help & Advice board. Don't annoy me.

(3.) They are at a higher level above those who have their Private Chat set to 'On'.

lvl 90s don't get spammed as often.

(4.) Say you delete a dear old friend from your friend's list because he hasn't been on for a long time (or for whatever reason) and then A week or so later he starts playing again. If you have Private Chat set to 'on' then can PM you, you can re-add him and your friendships will be restored. If you have it set to 'Friends', though, he won't be able to PM you and might even think that you don't play anymore - your friendship won't and never will be restored.

If you value that friendship that much you probably have him added on a messenger program or know which ircs he frequents.

- What do you have you're private chat set to and why?

Friends. I keep getting bugged by ppl who added me for some reason and ask me for advice on stuff they can easily look up themselves; most of the time I don't know it myself. Or they will ask me to join their Bandos team consisting of 3 lvl 100s.

- When (if ever) you have Private Chat set to 'on' about how often do you get spammed by other players? (e.g. once a day, twice a day once a week, etc...)

I have no idea. Enough to make me turn it on friends.

- In what ways do you agree/disagree with what I'm saying. Explain.

You take people ingame way to seriously. There's a difference between turning your RS chat to friends and wearing a t-shirt irl that says "if you talk to me I will kick you in the face".

Plus I think the whole teenage girl thing will end soon (hopefully), because my girlfriend is absolutely in love with him(she is 18), and im beginning to feel threatened by his [Justin Bieber] dashing looks.

Public chat "On" at GE (and everywhere).

(3.) They are at a higher level above those who have their Private Chat set to 'On'.

This is relevant how...? My private chat has been on "Friends" since I was level 6 in '04.

I don't delete friends. If i were to run out of room, I would remove my RSC friends who haven't been on in 5 or so years, and keep them in the otherwise useless Notes Tab.

Hell, there's no way you should hit 200 Friends as a normal player (Zezima, Skychi, Clan Boss, etc would be non-normal) unless you're so insecure about your life that you need 200 people constantly messaging you on a game.

If someone really had something to say to me they would either say it ingame or find a different way to message me (E.G Forums, IRC, ect.), otherwise the person doesn't know me at all and would have much better luck asking a friend instead of a stranger. I help people all the time whether it be ingame, through Tip.It messages or through IRC, but I can't seriously answer every question that people ask me. Stupid questions that could have been answered by themselves in less time than it took to add me and message me I generally do not respond to (unless it is a friend), and I also have to deal with spam, hate messages, praise messages (I don't care if you think I am awesome, it's a game.) and just general "Will you add me" messages and it just clutters everything up. I normally have my chat set to ON, but if the people start spamming or anything it just isn't worth taking away from my enjoyment of the game. It IS all about me, in my eyes, so why should I sacrifice enjoyment on a game to help out someone that has never and will never help me, because honestly if I do even answer people's questions most of the time they don't even say thanks, and never message me again.

How is it arrogant? Oh, ya, I love talking in private, in clan chat and in dungeoneering chat all at the same time whilst sometimes being on facebook. Real fun that is.

I can't have a little peace and quiet without being arrogant?

exactly.

i dont go around shouting about my bank worth, but if my chat is on i get so many people asking how i make money, train magic, or people messaging me about joining a manip clan. i used to help people a lot, but now its really annoying. im not going to write someone off because theyre a lower combat though, ive got a wide range of friends.

I leave my Public and Private chat on, reason being all my old friends have quit the game and I have 2 friends that still play, one which I talk with and the other I don't want to message him because I doubt he remembers me. There's no better use for my Private chat and I never get questions any more for some reason (I used to get a heap of them from random people about 2 years ago).

Personally I'm happy to answer questions for people that message me (And of course, it seems I'm the only person that never gets questions), but I don't find it wrong that people have their Private chat set to friends.

When you're relatively well-known (shut up I'm not bragging) it's annoying to have people constantly messaging you, distracting you from the people you actually want to talk to.

I don't give out my phone number to random strangers, or pick up phone calls from people I don't know -- unless I feel like it. Why should this be any different?

This right here.

Your all idiots. You cant compare a phone number to a Runescape private message.

Its like when people try to compare Runescape to World of Warcraft.

Mine is always on. Im willing to go the extra distance to be nice and help people.

Wonderful! Then you'll have no problem getting off RuneScape and doing some charity work in Africa - you know, being nice to people who need the help.

Actually you can and he did. He did with good accuracy.

OT: Sometimes I just don't want to talk. Sometimes I just want to be alone with my thoughts while I grind or do Barrows. If that makes me lame and arrogant, so be it.

Proud of who I am and what I am.

because i'm 21 years old that works 3rd shift and goes to school full-time during the day. When I get a chance to play runescape it is for my own personal entertainment/relaxation, not to help every random person who pm's me. I get alot of pms from people i don't want to talk to when my private is on. The people i want to talk to in rs are on my friends list. I've played since 2001 so I don't really have much in common with your average runescaper anymore. i'm sure if I was 13-16 I would engage in more conversation with people in runescape like i used to, but i'm not 13-16 anymore. The people I enjoy talking to are either on my friend's list or in the clan chat i frequent. I don't play runescape to make friends or socialize, thats what real life is for (for me).

Do i think i'm better than people just because i choose to play more privately? No, that's just how i enjoy my runescape experience.

Is it selfish for me to not help people? Maybe, but then again my time to play runescape is fairly rare so isn't it also selfish for you to assume that I should have to help every random person in runescape with the small amount of time i have to play. Most questions random people ask could be easily solved within 5 minutes of googling, I figured runescape out for myself throughout the years, why can't they?

You can be nice, by yourself.

Calling people idiots for holding their own views on a topic just isn't... you know, nice.

You keep your private chat on, I'll keep mine off, and we'll all dance around in circles happily singing (though I won't hear your singing; my private chat is off, you see).

IPersonally, I like meeting new people (especially since almost everyone I was friends with when I started playing have quit ages ago, so if I want to play and do activities with others I generally need to meet new people). But, I'm also extremely introverted. That doesn't mean I'm antisocial, but it does mean that I find interacting with people exhausting; even people I've known my whole life and I am extremely comfortable with. In RL, I sometimes go for days or weeks without talking to anyone I know for more than a few minutes (or at all, if the circumstances lend themselves to it); I try to keep conversation with strangers to the minimum I can while still being polite and avoid it wherever possible. Most people I know understand that I get burnt out. So, when I'm playing RS and starting to feel burnt out from interacting with people, I set my private chat to 'friends' or even to 'off.' I don't think it's rude or arrogant to be self aware and to use that knowledge to better my quality of life.

This.

Also, getting begged for money and/or things I am currently using gets old fast. Be it in either public or private chat. -.-

Uh... no, actually, it isn't "like" that at all.

It's a perfectly valid analogy. In both cases, it is a matter of deciding whether you want only people you know taking up your time, or anyone who wants to do so. In fact, it's a lot worse on RS because in the real world, people at least have the decency to respect others' time and privacy.

I help people all the time -- but that doesn't mean I am at the world's beck and call.

The arrogance is on the part of those who think that they have some sort of claim on my time simply by virtue of noticing that I am online.

As for the claims that turning private chat off implies that I'm better than other people? I am. So there. :)

I tend to add someone on my list, not talk to them for a while, eventually just delete them because i don't remember them, or I lose interest in them/see them often. Putting it on friends just makes sure i don't get messages from people who I added a long time ago.. and no, i'm not really interested in re-connecting.

I'm not sure if many people are aware of this, but people placed on your ignore list are able to track your world when you're private chat is set to 'on' (however, I am not aware if any changes were made). This is one of few reasons why I keep it on 'friends'.

I usually keep private chat on friends, mostly for one reason.... the merch clan spammers have moved to PM.

My Pm is "Friends" but I don't have room to add people. They could join my Cc or I could add them on another account to talk. :^_^:

I disagree. My private chat has been set to "friends" for years because my friend list has been full for years. I constantly scan through for people to delete, but friends simply don't quit that often (which is a good thing). I feel that it would be rude if my chat was set to on, but I couldn't reply to anyone simply because I have no space to add them. If someone wants to talk to me, I'm always willing to talk in Lady Heinous's clan chat. I've turned my private to "on" a couple times, but I get PM's from random people who apparently added me without letting me know. I'm all for Jagex expanding the limitations on the friend list, though.
