Don't you think it's kinda lame and arrogant to have Private Chat set to 'Friends'?

I've found that people you've just met have a nasty tendency of automatically assuming you're friends for life just because they've pm-ed you a question and you were nice enough to add them back to answer it (but deleted them right after)

 

One of a myriad of reasons to keep private chat on private.

I have pchat on unless I'm making overloads. I don't mind if people pm me for no reason, however I understand the people that leave it on friends.

To address your number 4 point:

 

If someone is your friend, you don't stop being friends because they quit playing a particular game. If you're friends with someone, you give them contact information to keep in touch. So if someone leaves and you never hear from them again, you're not friends.

 

 

To address your overall point:

 

It's people like you who are emo and whiny that ensure my chat setting is set to friends only. I do not exist to make you happy. I don't like you. I don't want to talk to you. Obviously you can't handle that concept, indicating to everyone that you are immature and emotionally needy. What you need to do is find a clan of emotionally immature and needy people so you can all sit around and tell each other how awesome and pretty and rich you all are and tell each other that you love each other and give each other cyber hugs and hi-fives all day long.

 

Kindly leave the rest of us alone :)

To address your number 4 point:

I know what you mean but, regardless of how many people actually do share contact information, it is technically against the rules to ask for personal information. Plus it is unlikely that you will have all your friends personal information or even consider that the reason you don't see them on rs p chat anymore is because they deleted you to clear up space (or for a number of a different reasons). Most likely you'd think that he doesn't play anymore and so you wold not think to contact him through some other method.

I have the feeling that the higher someone's combat level, the higher the chance that he or she has turned his private and public chat to friends or off.

I don't think it's lame or arrogant, but if I put chat on, I get spammed every few minutes by people asking me to join merchant clans, because I always sit in well-known people's clan chats =/

I do usually leave it on, but I don't respond to people I don't recognise in pm or ingame anyway, unless they say something interesting.

I don't really know why I leave it on, I've almost always had it that way since I started even though I've never really been interested in talking to people.

 

I guess leaving it on would probably make me look like a kinder person though

Sometimes I play with pub chat off too, not because I'm snobby or anything. I mean, I'm only lvl 128, but people say stupid stuff. And they do that lame [wagon] [cabbage]:

 

*Player 1 looks up player 2's stats*

 

*Player 1 notices that despite player 2 having 99 everything, has 83 cooking*

 

*Player 1 has 84 cooking*

 

*Both players are doing Agility/Slayer... just a skill thats completely un related*

UGH! I hate these idiots, so whenever I get asked that, I looked them up, then say I am one level higher than they are. That way they'll be like "liar! omg!" UHHH how do you know I'm lying? Unless you looked me up? Then WHY ASK ME MY LEVEL YOU INBRED. gah

 

Although I was hunting with all chats off, because well I've lsot too many traps from getting side tracked by chats. Someone shows up, I assume that like everyone flipping lvl 30 in Larupia that they are a botter, so I don't bother talking/ Like 15 minutes later I turn on pub cuz I'm almost done with the god forsaken skill.

I swear to GOD if Jagex bans me for "botting" I'm going balls in and creating a macro army like that of Asia and invading runescape. (I've had several friends banned for botting who don't bot. Irl friends that is, so I know they don't bot.)

Yeah. It really is kinda dumb. If someone bothers me via PM, thats what I have my ignore list for.

 

Sometimes I can support turning PM off completely though. If you want to grind some stuff and don't feel like talking to anybody, not even your friends, it is probably a good idea to just turn PM off so nobody even knows youre online.

 

The way I see it, having your PM on "friends" is like being one of those people who will get down and sit next to you on the bus and stare straight ahead with their iPod blaring in their ears. I'm not like that, I like to exist as a part of society. Not walk around, in a crowd, but all alone.

 

In all my years, I have met probably about 10-15 good friends just by randomly starting a conversation with them. Some have moved away by now and aren't a part of my life anymore, but if I walked around refusing to acknoledge the existence of strangers, I would have missed out on a whole lot of bar hopping, excercise buddies, and I was even part of a groom's party of someone who I met standing in line at the EB (electronics boutiqque...before the days of you younggins and your fancy GameStop)

 

Of course, the same applies for Runescape. I met my best online friend because he saw something I posted on here and PMed me with questions about the game. I helped him get started in Runescape and eventually we went on to play WoW together for about a year. Now we are Facebook friends.

 

Wouldnt have happened with "friends only" chat.

When i'm skilling or monster killing it's on public cuz sometimes people like to ask to use gilded altar, or what's the best way to get 99 WC or whatever. Those people are usually nice, polite, and some even stay on friends after a while.

 

Then you enter the cesspool known as THE GRAND EXCHANGE with your little Burger King hat on and then the resulting spam goes something like this: caniborrowphat?!?!plzplzplzhowumakemoneybarrowphat!omgitsnotevenyoursnoobnolifer etc etc.

 

So for your own sanity, PM goes to friends only :]

I personally have my chat set to "On" as I'm not famous at all, and manage my friends list very strictly (it's usually under 1 page on the display). Recently, however, I've been getting spammed by manipulating clan recruiters, so I just add them to ignore if I have to.

My private chat is usually set to "On". Being in a busy clan chat, you get PMed about all kinds of stuff, so it's good to keep flexible.

 

The only time I would normally turn it off or to Friends is if I'm doing something...other than talking to friends.

 

I hold no grudges against anyone that has their private chat set otherwise; they're entitled to not have people PM them just as much as the next guy.

Why is this thread even still going, has there been a single response yet agreeing that people who turn their chat to friends are "arrogant and lame"? This is not a discussion but rather everyone repeating over an over again that it is the players choice who they speak to, and it doesn't make them arrogant because they want to play a game and not deal with spam/immature players/idiots.

I keep my Private Chat on ON so that people can contact me when Ive removed them and the like. However, I understand why some people would rather have Friends On.

It's very simple, if you keep your private chat 'On' simply ignore the users that PM you asking to borrow things, or users who spam you with questions you have no time/answers for. Once you've ignored them, take them off of your ignore list. They usually have forgotten who you are after a few hours, and they'll delete you, or on the rare occasion ask you who you are. To this, don't respond, and they'll usually delete you; and to answer the actual question of this thread, No. I don't think it's lame or arrogant. Honestly, I don't think it's anything that should be of any concern to you in any situation. Unless it's the whole long-lost friend bit. Otherwise, why the hell does it matter?

I keep mine set to friends because I do have the occasional spammer add me for no reason, a beggar screaming at me for my robin or (yes, sadly) someone trying to impersonate Jagex for my account. Besides, TIF'ers only have to go into Hyt CC and ask me to add them and I will 90% of the time.

I keep my private on FRIENDS and have for years now.

 

I'm not better than anybody, I'm not snobby or arrogant.

 

I don't like random people being able to blurt stuff out in my chat because they want help, an item, to scam me, whatever it may be. I don't need people I USED to be friends with being able to see where I am and when I'm on. That's none of their business or any random persons.

 

I have plenty of friends on my friends list. I dont have to worry about not being able to see if a long time friend has come back or not, because if they are a FRIEND, I have no reason to delete them. I have plenty of people on my list who haven't been on for a year or more.

 

Being a GAME played for FUN and ENTERTAINMENT, I dont see how you can call people "lame and arrogant" for playing it their way. To each their own.

 

The way I see it, letting people PM you so you can help them, and then putting them on ignore when you're tired of it is rude. At least my ignore list is empty. I dont walk around with my cell phone # written on my face for random people to call/text me, so why should my PRIVATE CHAT not be private?

I have it on. I have an ignore list for randoms who spam me.

 

I'm usually happy to help out anyone, even Randoms.

 

If I need some piece and quiet, like dungeoneering/jad, I'll put it on off/friends if I'm in a team.
