The only visible impact I could see was possible poster withdrawal amongst a few members. :P

The fact that the words "homosexual" and "pedophile" are interchangeable according to some people.

Three months banishment to 9gag is something i would never wish upon anybody, not even my worst enemy.

The fact that the words "homosexual" and "pedophile" are interchangeable according to some people.

What the hell? These are so different. So apparently some poeple think that gay people are pedophiles?

The fact that the words "homosexual" and "pedophile" are interchangeable according to some people.

I know some people here who think like that. It's infuriating to hear them speak. <_<

I forgot where I heard this, but someone had said gay people were treated like pedophiles in the past, and now they're socially acceptable. Eventually pedophilia will be a social norm.

I doubt it, considering how the concept of informed consent is becoming more prevalent in society. No-one in their right mind would claim most victims of paedophilia were in a position of 'informed consent'. Almost all gay men can consent to having sex with another man. I could easily see the age of consent being reduced though, given it's already lower than 18 in a lot of other countries (my own included) and given that children are growing up faster, some would say too fast.

That's a problem of social use of language - conflation is not uncommon. It's subtle but it's there - the PSA suggested that all homosexuals were sexual predators that would resort to either grooming or violence - which is simply untrue by definition.

The argument that pedophilia will become a social norm is absolutely fallacious - it doesn't take into account reasoning as highlighted by Ginger_Warrior above. If you went through the logical steps, it would be impossible to deduce that conclusion without empirical evidence.

Actually, I think pedophilia will eventually become more acceptable (in terms of the lowering of the age of consent).

If it's possible for a 16 year old to give informed consent, why not a 15 year old? And then why not a 14 year old? Etc, etc.

I'm not saying I agree with it, I just wouldn't be overly surprised if it happens.

By 'consent', you mean them or the parents consenting it? I don't see pedophilia ever being *completely* acceptable (unless we go back to being a Roman society, which I hope never happens), but the parental/self consent thing is as far it'll get knowing society.

Let's be clear on the gravity of the situation here. The argument is primarily concerned with 'pedophilia' - only including people with sexual attraction with children whom are prepubescent - not ephebophilia which includes those who are pubescent from the age of 15 to 19.

I would see the argument revolving around the age of puberty - so if only that were to change, would the laws and social attitudes change.

It's interesting though - in the past, people married at ages as young as thirteen - primarily because of the average lifespan of an individual back in the day though.

Edit concerning the above post - I believe the term 'consent' were in the context of sexual consent, which would be based around the individual thus not the parents. In the eyes of the law, if the individual is unwilling/incapable or lacks the capacity to consent, then it's still unlawful.

Well, I don't think it would be completely acceptable, but it has been and is currently acceptable to some degree. I just don't see it as being that far fetched that we may go back that way again.

Yeah. Like I said above, it's happened in the past and continues to this day, I don't see it as that outrageous that it could eventually start being accepted again.

Ahhhhh. Roommate's semi 'crush' is coming to visit us tonight. And I think my roommate wants me to sleep somewhere else for the night (not cause they'll have sex; just for privacy).

I was planning on staying in and messing around on the Xbox until late tonight. :\ Phooey.

I'm only slightly annoyed, seeing as he doesn't exactly know if he wants to do anything with her... He needs to make up his mind so I know what to do tonight.

But it already is changing. There are girls as young as seven reaching precocious puberty. It's asinine to suggest that a seven-year old is capable of understanding the risks involved in having sexual intercourse with another person. The above parameter doesn't take into account the various emotional effects puberty has on adolescents, which lead them to make irrational and misinformed decisions. Also, I think you'd first have to examine why girls are entering puberty earlier than past generations, because some of the reasons aren't really desired (societal pressure for children to 'grow up' quicker than in the past, having sex being part of that, for example).

I think our current age limit of 16 in the UK hits it about right, since that's generally the age people come out of puberty (in other words, not inclusive of pubescents as well as prepubescents), after they've matured physically and come to grips with all the changes that have happened to their bodies over the past five or so years.

I can see the age being lowered by a couple of years, but never allow a 7 year old the legal ability to do it.

Hmm - interesting, haven't considered emotional maturity. I'd agree with most of that.

Your roommate sounds like a strange dude. If they want privacy, why not go somewhere else that is slightly more private such as outside somewhere?

Well, they may have made out or what not.

But, good news is that he told her he didn't want to do anything since she's not his girlfriend. And she said okay. So, yeah.

When I click on a thread that I frequent (For example, the Today thread) that has new posts and read them all, then hit the back button which brings me back to OT, but since I used the back button, it shows that there are new posts on the thread still and I automatically click on it again without realizing that it was what I was just looking at. Upon getting there I realize what I have done, however that doesn't stop me from doing it a few times in a row every once in a while.
