Vanity Items - RS Prepaid cards and Ornate Katana

I could live with the loyalty program. But this sounds like an introduction to jagex starting to sell ingame items. Are they really that desperate ?

Given their approach to bots and a lot of other aspects of the game since they reintroduced free trade, I'd have to say yes they are.

It really bums me out seeing the game i have loved and played for years going down the drain the worst way possible.

You know, I might not like how they're doing this...but it's really not like that at all. You're not paying cash to exclusively get an item. You're still getting a service with a 'thank you' present on the side.

Some of the issue is that this vanity item is unbalanced for the requirements to wield it--it's between a black and a mithril scim with only requiring 1 att/str. And this isn't available to all players. Yes they won't be reoccurring things and they're only special promotions, but it's still not fair to others.

People will complain about anything. If they're just for looks, who cares?

It's not just for looks like other holiday items are, because its stats are unbalanced.

meh I gave up after the first runefest. If jagex wants to advertise they should do commercials or something.

I thought jagex was against real world trading.

That was before they brought back free trade. I have no idea what they're views are anymore, but I liked the old ones more.

lol... It's basically a black sword that requires 1 attack to use. Yes, that's worth "mass outrage".

Irrelevant to you does not mean irrelevant to everyone. And I suspect the 'mass outrage' is more due to the fact that Jagex has a tendency to take things too far. This one could be a promotional item for noobs. Next could be a platebody that rivals a Rune Plate and is also risk-free. They went from flagstaffs with no significant stats to this, so it's very possible and we have every right to be concerned.

I understand that this might rob you of your chance to be cynical, but maybe you better understand why people are upset about it now. :)

Its stats are on-par with lesser steel weapons, and far outclass iron weapons.

Alone it isn't terribly unbalancing, since the tiny extra bonus doesn't affect most players.

But what if future items are similarly balanced (aka, a full tier above their requirements in stats)?

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

I told her there was a secret method to doing it - and there is - but my once nimble and agile fingers were unable to perform because I was under the influence.

I would laugh, not hate. I'm a male. :(

So you're arguing against something which has yet to happen?

I do believe you're the one being cynical here.

No, people are arguing about the trend that already is happening.

Since this is the first time Jagex has done as much, so it's hard to call this a 'trend'.

Loyalty program... Now this...

Not to mention the extra bank spaces for buying the USB protection stick idea. This goes further than decided to not give perm bans for macroing in order to hold on to members.

I believe the cards are around 8 USD, 60% higher than my membership with a CC. I'd be paying $3 for a vanity item.

Not even just the loyalty program, but the now-ditched USB stick idea, the flagstaff idea, the item that will eventually be released for RuneFest 2011...

I wouldn't say there was a trend if this hasn't happened before. I'm not as stupid as you might think :P

They've probably been thinking about adding micro-transactions to the game for quite some time. They know some of the user base won't like it, so they're taking baby steps. That's what it looks like anyway.

I honestly and truly think they will NEVER do microtransactions--they've promised that too many times to welch on it now. I do think though that this trend will continue where memberships and things like that are padded with bonus things to keep people buying. Thus they don't break their word but still get people to pay.

They were smart in making these objects members-only. So it's not exactly like you're paying 6.00 for an item and go back to F2P with it, never having to buy members again. If they hadn't, then I think the argument that RS is turning to MTs could truly be made.

Doesn't make sense why they would do this for prepaid cards which surely make jagex the least amount of money after making the cards and distributing them around the world. What of us who are true loyal members who only pay 3.20 a month?

So if I had waited to redeem my game card till today rather than yesterday, I would've gotten a pretty katana? Oh, that's cute, Jagex.

But seriously, Jagex cracks me up. It's a good thing I only care about Dungeoneering or I'd be pretty disgusted with this game.

I suspect this is mainly a ploy to make people better aware of these cards' existence. It's surprising the number of people I've heard talking about how their lack of a credit card makes it either difficult or impossible for them to get members.
