Why are people nicer over the internet?

Why are people nicer over the internet compared to real life? :|

Might be a stupid question... But we take it for granted and (probably) never really ask ourselves why. :-k

Why do people give me "huggles" or slap me playfully with "fish"?

Why do people say "lol" a lot, yet are probably not even smiling irl?

Why are people able to talk to, and trust, complete strangers online without care or thought? :-s

And *cough* why do girls talk to me and not *cough* irl? :anxious:

Is it because we can't see each other, speak with each other...

Even smell each other?

Is it because we all speak a common language?

Is it because rules say that we must be nice to each other?

Or maybe its because our ideas and opinions are the only things that matters over the internet?

Why in god's name are people different online?

Thats what I'd like to know from your view. :-$

Oh and FYI, its 4:55 AM in the morning and this post is the result me having one of those enlightening "moments" which, under normal circumstances, I probably would have regretted ever coming up with... :wall:

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

In the event that the weighted companion cube does speak, the Enrichment Center urges you to disregard its advice.

Hmm possibly because we can't see each other and therefore judge one another. As well as the fact alot of us will probably never meet eachother in real life, we can say what we want to whoever we want and there not be any consequences to our actions. However I don't think everyone is nice on the internet go play runescape for like 10 minutes and you'll know what I mean..

Striker is right. It's the fact that we can't see each other -- it is a lot easier to talk to others without a visual. There's no need to be self-concious about your actions or appearance. :)

The only downside is that you can be as "fake" as you'd like to be. :P

Because they're not really girls.

As for being nicer on the internet, it goes the other way too. You can be an impudent little brat to someone because you know they can't hurt you. People feel less responsibility for their actions.

Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.

Because when someone is speaking in only text, you can fill in the tones and in-betweens yourself, and thus you're less annoyed by people and less mean :D Plus, if someone tells an awful joke in real life, you might try to give a slight half smile, which is the equivalent of an "lol" really :P

I don't know. Online, it's just easier to be nice. :D

Everybody hug and spread the love :D

I came into this thread thinking that most people are probably nicer in person than they are over the net, for the same reasons mentioned above.

In general, the nice people you come across online are probably the same in person, whereas the keyboard warriors who make it their duty to abuse people online are, for the most part, probably still living with their parents and wouldn't dare talk to anyone that way face to face.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

Maybe its not 4:55am where jak722 lives ;)

I share my opinion with Rizla, I think people are much more friendly in real life than online.

How many runescape players does it take to change a lightbulb?

50.

1 to change the bulb and the other 49 to complain about how it was better before.

THE MODS THERE ARE COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOTS!

So why are you here?

That used to be me, but I argue on the internet now the way I do in real life. The difference is that people are a lot more brazen on the internet in terms of being opinionated than in real life  . So if you met me in real life then we would probably get along well and I wouldn't be such an argumentative richard.

True. I find it easy to talk to people online, plus you have time to think up a response you don't have to respond right away. Plus were judging eachother by text, not analizing eachother with all our senses.

I do think it's a lot easier to come across as being harsh on the net. You don't have the tone of someones voice to indicate how they mean what they say, so someone who's agreeing with you might sound like they're being sarcastic.... or vice versa i guess.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

I think it is worth being a member of this message board for however many years to come across the phrase "keyboard warriors." :P

I agree with that.

I find it much easier to talk to people online because you have time to think of what your gonna say. Irl you just have to say whatever comes to your mind.

Although there are a lot of nice people on the internet I find that some people are meaner because they know that no one can do anything to then if they are mean.

I don't think there's much difference for myself. Maybe I'm even nicer in real life. :o

I'm only nicer to people who I don't have any reason to be mean to. In online games, where people are annoying me, I give em an earfull.

It's so much easier to be however you want to be online, because you have time to think about what you're saying.

Hmmm.... I think people are generally meaner online because ttey know the worst thing that happens is another person will type up a rude message to them that they can simply not read if they choose. However on tip.it we have mostly nice people whereas on rs people are as mean as hell just because they can be. The people taht are nicer might want to shave a rep of being nice, where in rl they are mean and can't shake that rep, even if tehy want to. I am probably as nice as I am rl here, occasionally getting really mad and totally taking it out on the other person but not all the time like some people.

Haha, that made me laugh.

Anyway, I act the exact same way online as I do in person. I also say the exact same stuff online as I do in person.

... Actually, now that I think about it, I say a whole lot more in person than I do online. If you make me mad and I say something rude to you, I don't have to worry about getting banned from life, as I do with this message board. :P

Ghost: I am prejudice towards ignorance, so that would explain why I appear to be so.
