How nice is "too nice"?

I used to have the same exact problem with a certain beggar. I had given him a full rune set (200k at the time), so he wanted me to add him. I did. From that time on, about every day he asked for a new set, saying that he died in the wilde. Me, being nice, gave it to him. After awile, he simply didn't log on. I was thankful. But I finally learned the hard way.. A little if fine, but enough is enough.

I'll never go out of my way to help someone who can't type right. It's more subconscious, I just won't want to help someone who comes up and asks "hey can u com 2 avvinacnces n sho me gud spot?". If someone seems nice and I'm not doing something important I'll go out and help them. What goes around comes around.

Although since I became a PMod I no longer feel like helping out so much, ironically enough. The reason for that is, at the end of *every* conversation comes the question "How do I become a pmod?". It's obvious that's the only thing on their mind. It gets much more annoying than you'd think, I hardly ever talk in the GE any more (unless I'm alching, in which case I can brew up some interesting conversations and arguements from typing in public chat  ).

I usually help out if the subject they're asking about interests me. Like Slayer or Range.

Thanks to all those who have messaged me concerning a revamp of my Range-Slayer guide. Because of you all I will start rewriting it asap.[/color]

There's very little in this game that people actually need help with that they can't find in 2 minutes in the runescape manual/worldmap itself or on any fansite...

true but many noobs dont know about fansites.

It is a bad thing, these people are scum and deserve to be driven into the dirt, not encouraged by you.

I dont know what this guy is talking about. I consider him a total noob. Good fight 99 cooking narb. Skully_Sc has no right calling people a noob when hes a noob himself. You dont have the right to call anyone a noob if you have less then 2k total imho.

Here is my 2 cents for this post.

Its so easy to make cash in this game if you have the skill levels to do it. If they are a real noob i tell them the ways i made cash when i was their level.

You give a man a fish he eats for a day.

You teach a man to fish he eats for a lifetime.

That being said, with the new fair trade rules in effect ill give the noob the max amount of cash i can trade a few times when im at the bank. I dont care i have heaps of cash and its only a few hundred thousand gold.

One of the best ways to make cash for a low level player is flesh crawlers. I made my first million there and a like 30 combat levels aswell. i always recomend it to new players.

I also recommend slayer. But i find with new beggars they don't have the patience to level slayer so they never do it. They don't have the patience to level any skills for that matter or else they wouldn't be begging.

Wow i guess i am nice to noobs after all.

a lot of high level (ranked under 1000) helped me when i needed it so i guess i owe the noob community back.

I like to help people who need help, but i never help people just begging for items. Except if they need one law rune to get to varrock or something similar.

I have fond memories of helping one guy beat dragon slayer (right before unbalanced trade was removed) by taking him through most of the steps and giving him good items for the fight, including my rune warhammer that I had used for about 10 levels because i loved it so much. I ended up giving him about 90k in items, and a couple of hours of my time. What did i get in return? Physically, nothing. but i had one of the best couple of hours I have ever had on runescape.

I would say to help people, if it makes you happy. Especially the people who legitimately need help, not just begging for items

Noob =/= newb.

I'll help people when I can, to be honest it has been ages since someone has actually asked me for something that doesn't require a sentence or two to answer. I don't consider that being overly helpful, it is just polite.

Too nice is when they take advantage of you. If they are genuinely thankful, there is no such thing as too nice. Though I do not give out free money. Unless it's "I've been woodcutting for 3 hours to get 200k but the prices have changed and I'm now 3k off", but I still take caution to their claims.

I like being nice, someone has to set a good example or else the newbs will be selfish themselves in the future.

I never give out anything for free to randomers. I give one particular friend some secondary ingredients if he asks for them but he gives me the herb seeds that he gets from Slayer. But I always try to help and answer some questions and I would then refer them to the World Map/Tip.It or the GE database on the main page to help them in the future.

Yeah this is the truth :P also if someone is shown in a personal way how to do something I find that it sticks in their head and they don't need help again...normally... :D and after, for example, showing someone the way to gnome village I refer them to tip.it for any more needs, even more now than I used to now that I can say "tip.it" without getting muted for two days >.> (this happened to me before).I've also taken to setting my private chat to friends only so they can't keep messaging me for more help thereby leaving them to fend for themselves or bother some other poor soul (sorry if I pawn some newbie off on you someday ::' )

I think I might be too nice also. I sometimes lend one of my Party Hats for free until logout or for about an hour to strangers. This surprises a few people who are used to silent high levels, and the ones that say things like "go away noob." I'll also help people verbally, but definitely wouldn't walk someone way out of my way. And I give nothing to beggars, except maybe an until logout lend of one of my afformentioned Party Hats. I don't believe in karma per se, but I wonder if playing like this has anything to do with my GWD solo luck.

There's a difference between begging for things and asking for help. It's also been mentioned that people that can type clearly are much more likely to get help. Basically whenever someone is requesting help I'll usually help if I'm not immediately in the middle of something else. I'll also usually give away small items but not cash.

I hate begging. I don't mind helping people with small things though, will occasionally chuck in some money when I leave them on the condition that they haven't asked for it. But I'll only help people if they say please - P-L-E-A-S-E, not "plzzzzzz"

I can be too nice sometimes. One time, this kid wanted to borrow a pair of d claws, so I lent them to him for free. A week or so later (day ago), he asked if I would do some kind of clan wars glitch with him so he could make money. I told him no, then he asked if I would transfer him 3M so he could "get a headstart" and that he would pay me back in 4 weeks. I said no, but tried to be polite about it. Then, he asked me how much cash I have and how much I make, so I told him. Then, he hounded me for more money and started to get pissed. When he went down to 1M, I said no and he was like "It's just 1!!!! M! You have over 70M and can't loan me 1M? You greedy SOB! You don't trust me, idc." At that point, I added him to my ignore list.

This is one of the reasons why you only interact with mature players. If they seem young, don't have anything to do with them.

I only help friends, but the most I'll do is opening waterbirth doors if I'm not actually busy. Most of the time I just verbally help them though, or redirect them to a guide.

Agreed. I instantly dislike people who say plz :P

If they are not asking something unreasonable (For example, dragging me away from what I'm doing for more than a bit of my time) then I'm happy to help, and I always carry soul runes for teleother or cure poison spells, just incase someone gets in a little jam. Just the other day a level 60 was in pollnivneach and didn't bring GP and ran out of water. So I got some empty waterskins, cast humidify on them and traded them to him, then explained how to fill waterskins. Some people take this game way too seriously with the way they react to people who need help and even ask for it politely. Learn to play nice, it'll do you some good.

Original Poster: It's always nice to help other players, but you must also always keep in mind that there is a difference between helping/teaching somebody and doing the work for them.

that helps with my problem about how i get my levels up....but i have a problem keeping over 1 mill in my bank without giving some to people begging on the streets(in banks)....it's how i was raised....

Rofl this must be a joke. I would have put that many periods in between that phrase too if you're serious.

Why are you taking this type of advice from tiffers? I mean don't you have an opinion? Do you like helping people or don't you? It's as simple as answering that question.

Your rights end where others' rights begin.

If they're beginning to hurt you in any way (taking up too much time, making you take heavy damage, etc.), that's your cue to stop.

You must also ask yourself, "Would they do the same for me?"

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping people (and I do it a lot myself), and it is the "right" thing to do, but you have to learn to say enough is enough.

If you're really having a problem, put your public chat on friends. You'll feel bad the first few minutes, but you'll learn to ignore it.

For a location question: "Make use of the map/Knowledge Base" (I will sometimes walk them there if I know they are genuinely new to the game or I have to walk by that area anyway).

For a clothing question: I will tell them the item's use and requirements to wear, if they still continue asking for more info I tell them to use the Knowledge Base.

For a money question: Only if they ask me how to make money will I tell them different items to merchant or skills to train for money, if they demand money I will ignore them.
