chi13
:? I've been thinking through jagex's recent updates. Lets see, loot share, the assist system, the new dueling system-all of these reduce player to player contact, especially the grand exchange. In this system players from all over the game will post items in an in game "forum" so other players can buy, right? This will certainly narrow down merchanting, but certainly not to the point where players can buy a big stack of items and resell them low, right? Not to the point where rwters can't sell a bronze dagger for 50m right? Wrong! My theory is that jagex will actively limit the price range at which we can sell our items, meaning that it will be IMPOSSIBLE to make a reasonable profit merchanting (which like pures, stakers, staking and pest control) doesn't seem to be a real part of the game. :ohnoes: Commets? A REPLACEMENT?Ok picture this, they replace your yew and magic trees with a tree that if you attempt to cut it alone your axe breaks, if you cut it with a group as soon as you get a log you get a skull on your head, all the other woodcutters attack you and you cant log out for 3 minutes.Bounty hunter and tournaments were not a replacement, they are garbage. M6c_Magnum
I absolutely love having to spend hours at a time trying to buy thousands of something, getting only like 100 at a time or so. ^ sarcasm. Merchants make my life easy because they will round up thousands or something for me, saving me tons of time. Do I have to pay extra? Yes, but who cares, in the time I save, I can make that money back x3. So, without merchants, my life would suck obviously, and hope they aren't eliminated :) [/bads]

mrmyk
You're just going one step too far to eliminate merchanting. I was on RSOF a lot this morning and it is as lively as ever and trust me, when buying that phat I had as much trouble with merchanters as I did before these updates. icecube
Well, right now merchanting is still alive. GE may slow it down/kill it/help it whatever, we just have to wait to see. Made couple million visage merchanting today :P.
Solidus_77
Merchanting can only die if price elasticity of both demand supply are so so high that people will not bother buying for a slightly higher price or selling for a slightly lower price. Never gonna happen. Will GE affect merchanting? Of course! Will it kill merchanting? No, stop being overly dramatic  76th to reach 99 Construction on 6th of February 2007379th to reach 99 Runecrafting on 4th of November 2007 Finally the secrets of goal achieving are revealed! gameboypen
While we wait for Duke to come and make a statement to your claim. I'll sorta quote him, "You don't deserve the term merchant if you can't adapt to the market."
mchainmail
The only type of merchanting that is guaranteed to thrive in the new system is the "opportunistic" merchant, those that sell rings of dueling for 5k each, or sharks 1k ea a couple at a time. Also, people looking to ditch some stuff quickly in a far-flung bank will be satisfied with a lower price. Finally, the "composite" merchants should be able to adapt. The people that trade flax for bowstrings, or any similar items should have enough room to adapt.
The Dark Lord
Days Remaining Until Runescape Apocalypse: 2 :ohnoes: Jagex will probably also stat-wipe us and clean out our banks and inventories during the update as well, just to make you mad. --- I just think merchanting will be a little harder, but people may still be willing to sell for a little lower or buy for a little higher. The return from merchanting will be less. You can still buy raw materials and make an item and sell for higher. Besides, God Wars items will drop dramatically this upcoming week and you can buy items and then wait and sell later when they start rising again. 12markkram34
Merchanting can never completely be destroyed. JaGeX would Never make it so that you must sell or buy items at a set price. Merchanthing may become harder, but will not be killed.
No_99_Melee
If prices lower than the value of the gp will lower too, making a once again stable market.
Solidus_77
If prices lower than the value of the gp will lower too, making a once again stable market. Economics proves otherwise. When the prices fall, the value of the gp increases. There is no say in what could happen next, it depends on a ton of things. 76th to reach 99 Construction on 6th of February 2007379th to reach 99 Runecrafting on 4th of November 2007 Finally the secrets of goal achieving are revealed! PsyClonz6110
I wouldn't be very happy. Even if your not a full time merch it would still be hard to play the game without it. :uhh: This is a temporary account. Ash6110 is my real one. Plugpoint
Don't exaggerate so much when you don't have a clue how this will affect merchanting. I hate how everyone's jumping to conclusions about both the Grand Exchange and Summoning. Let's wait til they're released before we make assumptions, mmkay? firsttsurugi
Something tells me that once this update occurs, worlds 1,2, and all the other trading worlds will still be as lively as they ever were, if just won't be necessary to spend 3 hours trying to log on to world 2 to simply buy one small item. This will be easier for me when I decide to subscribe again and just put a price on certain items in bulk (white berries), then just walk away. Currently will be using my Oni Tsurugi account to attempt to get 99 on all free skills without spending any gp, just for the sake of doing so.
