January 10, 200917 yr I have a question for all of you regarding your use of certain high end items. Why do you wear "great" armor or use an "awesome" weapon? Let me elaborate on what I mean by this. On most melee based Slayer tasks, I use a Whip and Defender and wear Rune legs and plate. This is in contrast to the common combination of DFS + Bandos Armor + Whip or Bandos Armor + Godsword. The difference in cost of these combinations is vast while the offensive and defense benefits of the more expensive combination seems to be negligible (For those of you who argue that Godswords hit higher, my personal experience is that whips have much higher damage per second). This is just my personal observation. While I can afford all of the above combinations, I feel they are really not worth it. On several Slayer tasks, people have gone so far as calling me a "Noob" for wearing Rune. This got me thinking... So I ask you... Why do you wear certain armor or use certain weapons? Is it really for the offensive or defensive capabilities? or Is it to show off your wealth?
January 10, 200917 yr I don't really wear high end armour to "show off". I just wear it because I can afford it. Do you think Jagex should add how much of an ego bonus armour gives you as well? ^ Refresh for a new signature ^
January 10, 200917 yr Obviously, people want to be efficient. Bandos armour is much better then rune armour. Dragon drops: 82 (2 claws)Dagannoth kings drops: 73Barrows item count: 51GWD drops: 54 (5 hilts: 1x bandos, 3x saradomin, 1x zamorak)Whips: 4Sigils: 1x spectral (FFA), 1x arcane (FFA)
January 10, 200917 yr I'm using SGS because I am training strength. It also has a huge prayer bonus. Ever since I got also a trimmed skill cape, I don't need any prayer pots at black dragons. I just wear a combination of guthans/veracs and let them hit me (with a bunyip). If the SGS can't heal me enough I switch to melee protect prayer. Once I am healed again a bit I switch off melee protection. On other tasks I have 5%-10% strength prayer bonus on constantly for free thanks to the SGS. Aberrant specters are a joy with SGS. I can basically stay there for the entire task. But I usually bank halfway. It's not about showing off wealth. I have only 4M in the bank (but last week I made 10M with slayer and farming, so it will rise again). It's about buying something nice and enjoying it. I
January 10, 200917 yr Author Gremmy, Is it really that more efficient? Ive observed other maxed out players using both Bandos + DFS or Bandos + Whip. They dont kill Abyssal Demons faster than I do with my Whip and Defender. Maybe being maxed out changes the dyanamics....but is killing an Abyssal Demon 0.01 seconds faster worth 20 million gold. Zotto, I have to admit SGS is quite useful. Armadyl is also a boon to Pkers. The main items I have problems with are Bandos Armor and DFS.
January 10, 200917 yr I can't train strength with a whip. ;) And the SGS is definitely faster exp than the ss with high level slayer monsters. I tried SS, BGS, ZGS and SGS. I hated BGS and ZGS..I actually went back to SS for a while after having had BGS and ZGS. I don't really notice that I am slower than the people with whip and defender, so if the godsword is slower it is only marginally so. That doesn't really bother me, since I get a lot of benefits back for it: free healing and prayer.
January 10, 200917 yr I must admit that I would never purchase 3rd age or something similar. I had bandos plate for a while, but I couldn't notice much effect of the bonus. So I sold that. And I am done with strength (one final level left) I will go back to whip and rune defender for most tasks. But I will keep the SGS since it is especially suited for some jobs. Equipment may be expensive but it has to be useful.
January 10, 200917 yr what i dont get is the use of dfs at all on non dragon tasks the defenders accuracy bonuses well makes up for a defense loss and -4 str bonus Check it out, huge amount of effort has gone into this massive mod![hide=old sig][/hide]
January 10, 200917 yr I used Torag's armour for Slayer training because I think it looks better than Rune, likewise I wear Sara D'hide because I prefer its looks to black d'hide. I'm not sure if I would ever buy Bandos even if I could afford it as I would much rather spend the money on skills or making my house look good. I have been guilty of buying Dragon armour on several occasions just for the looks  "Unfortunately, the real world isn't the same as a fairy tale."
January 10, 200917 yr Author what i dont get is the use of dfs at all on non dragon tasks the defenders accuracy bonuses well makes up for a defense loss and -4 str bonus Defender actually has +5 str bonus so its only -2. I totally agree with your sentiment.
January 10, 200917 yr I kind of have an obsession with "becoming more powerful", as do some others around my level. Case in point, I bought Bandos Tassets when they were like 16.5m mostly for the +2 str bonus they gave. I bought a BGS at 43m to have a Godsword. And now with all the money I've made soloing GWD, of course i'm going to use the high end items. I'd be using a Divine or Elysian shield if I could ever get my hands on one. Edit: I personally used DFS over Defender after 88 Summoning when I sold my Guthan. I like to use fighter familiars for most multicombat tasks, and since I don't have Guthan, the extra Defense really helps. 4x Phat owner: Blue, Green, 2x Purple 3100+ GWD bosses soloed.Solo GWD Drops:5 Bandos Plates, 4 Bandos Boots, 3 Bandos Hilts, 2 Arma Helms, Arma Skirt, Arma Plate, 3 Arma Hilts, 4 Zammy Spears, Steam Staff, 15 Sara Swords, 6 Sara Hilts, 29 Shards.
January 10, 200917 yr Because i can afford it. I will use armadyl over d hide because: It looks good It provides a small difference in accuracy which does add up. Also whats more usefull a load of cash ? or an item that does increase your stats by a little bit.
January 10, 200917 yr The dragonfire shield is fairly pointless - not because it's more expensive than a defender, but because if you're using a bunyip and you have decent defence, you might as well get the +19 slash bonus instead of overhealing yourself on anything other than Nechrayels, or of course boss monsters. But if you're really into maximum exp/hr, you'll be using a combat familiar, so it could come in handy, I guess. Dragonfire Shield pking on a 75 defence pure looks pretty fun though. Bandos armour is used because - well, let's face it, if you have a spare 20m, which a lot of avid slayers/skillers/monster hunters may have, you might as well buy armour which has great defence, strength and prayer, and that you will use for anything other than pietying or mage defence. Sure, rune will suffice, but Bandos armour is just plain better. I'm not saying you should save up for Bandos because rune is terrible, but you're better off with Bandos armour than 20 million coins. But then, you're better off with 20 million coins than a fancy player-owned house, so I can't talk.
January 10, 200917 yr I'd like to think I use bandos because it helps alot more than what I used to wear which was guthans 8-) but it doesn't too much. The 2 extra max hits do help overtime I guess. But the main reason I'd say well if I didn't spend 72M on my SGS and 25M on my bandos armour I'd just be upgrading to a blue p hat with that money and buying the bandos and sgs is a much better investment. It's mainly because I can afford it and face it, it looks better than rune. Anyway having the extra defender saves you having to use a bunyip and that way you can use a CB familiar to get hawt XP. January 10, 200917 yr I just use barrows plate/legs whip/rune def, I would upgrade to bandos legs/plate if I had the money though. : I meen, why not? ~ K O N K A R ~ Konkar Jr ~ X Konkar X99 Strength - 18/12/08 - 99 Attack - 5/2/0999 Hp - 20/7/09 - 99 Defence 26/7/09R.I.P.K R I S KKrisk JrRSC, Lives on in all of us
January 10, 200917 yr There's a reason they're 'great' or 'awesome' and that tends to be the reason people use them.
January 10, 200917 yr I use Dragon Scimitar + Rune Defender + Helm of Neitiznot + Dragon Boots + Glory Ammy + Legends' Cape + Granite Body + Dragon Skirt + Addy Gloves. Costs less than a whip, but with some potions they are not bad. Seriously, I don't have anything worth more than Dragon Boots and only ~500K cash ;) I'll become member again soon, and then it's time to collect money. Not for equipment, but for skills instead :D The Runar's (OSRS) DIY blog - most viewed Blogscape blog ever! Contract? /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
January 10, 200917 yr Maybe being maxed out changes the dyanamics....but is killing an Abyssal Demon 0.01 seconds faster worth 20 million gold. The thing is you don't lose the 20m except you die. So you can always sell the armor if you need the money. So if you have enough money lieing around why not use it? [404] Signature not found.
January 10, 200917 yr I use Barrows pieces along with whip / d sq or rune def, d boots, barrow gloves, trimmed cape, and fury. Nothing is that expensive, and the bonuses and speed to kill increase is significant. Since it will take a loooong time to max melees or get 99 slayer, every fairly economical improvement helps. I do weigh the value of these improvements. I'd happily slow down tasks like black dragons to avoid using p pots.
January 10, 200917 yr Why to use barrow gloves when you can use leather gloves ... its only +12 atk bonus , and some crappy def ... and the leather gloves are 0.00004% of the price of the barrow gloves ! (you need to do a quest for them too , and who likes quests =/ ) (SARCASM)
January 10, 200917 yr i wear high end armour because of the attack and strength bonuses but on occasions where i have a greater chance of dieing (where i would bring a ring of life, or sharks as food), then i would switch to something like rune, and addy boots.

January 10, 200917 yr Offensive > Defensive Torso + tassets , im poor in slayer terms because i dont cannon or piety, but hell, i still lvl.
January 10, 200917 yr Im with the thread creator on this. I would like Bando's sure, but I just see it as a waste of money. I myself use rune. I dont even have dragon boots anymore since I died with them I just use rune boots. 61,358th to 99 range on May 23rd, 2010.100,927th to 99 def on February 13th, 2011.
