How much time do you get on the ACT test?

http://www.act.org/news/aapfacts.html says:

How long does the test take?

Just over 4 hours for the ACT without the Writing Test, including administration instructions and breaks. Actual testing time is 2 hours and 55 minutes, broken down as follows:

English: 45 minutes

Math: 60 minutes

Reading: 35 minutes

Science: 35 minutes

The ACT Writing Test adds 30 minutes to the testing time.

Has anyone ever taken the AP Calculus BC test? My $86 payment's due tomorrow. I also have the possibility of taking the AP Physics B and AP Spanish tests, but I don't think I will.

35 minutes for a reading test sounds brutal.

I got a 32 on the ACT's. It was really easy to be honest. You just have to know some formulas.

In my Cisco class, we made lengths of cat5 cable , strait through to be exact. I was one of few who did it only using two RJ-45 male connectors ( one for each end). Tomarrow we do the female end / termination end.

Cisco class? :-s

I'm pretty sure he is talking about some sort of IT class (where you learn about computers).

I take a class like that and we use Cisco for lots of our stuff.

That's what it is. Meh, I'm on the programming side, so I don't get the fun to do that kind of stuff, I sometimes wonder why I didn't go for networking instead of programming, but they're both very fun and I love programming.

[bleep]ing homework. Serves no purpose but to waste time, but it counts for 20% of my grade.

We wouldn't have homework if idiots didn't waste so much [bleep]ing time by interrupting the class.

... Yes you would?

The majority of the work I do is given explicitly as homework, because the rest of the time we're busy doing other crap.

Shouldn't the majority of the work be done in class, though? In a school setting without too many distractions?

Homework is often an excuse for teachers not to actually teach anything. Or at least teachers who are bad at teaching just give lots of homework to cover that up.

Math courses may be an exception though since they always give ridiculous amounts of homework. Maybe I've never had a good math teacher though.

Woooow. If you really believe that then just wow... Homework is there so that the student can understand and practice the material on their own. So many people would fail tests if homework weren't given.

Maybe it's different where you live. In my school it's often repetitious tasks that don't really help in any way shape or form but still count as 20% of your grade. It's basically there to boost the grades of the people who don't pass a single test or quiz and to bring down those of us who actually understand the material and don't want to do it another hundred times.

Whatever, I'm probably just bitter because homework is really the only reason why I don't have A's. Or even B's in some cases. I'd say it's justified though since I get test scores 10-20% higher than some people but still have the same or lower grades as them.

Repetitive tasks makes you better at whatever you're doing. It's why math teachers assign 25 problems instead of just 5, because you'll get more practice doing 25.

And where I'm at, homework is way more than 20%. In math it's 35%, Spanish is 40%, Chemistry is 25%, and history is 50%.

For people who understand the stuff (ie, the kids who do it but still whine about it) homework is useless. But with the current system of education, it's impossible to tailor school to each individual student's needs.

I know I'd be lost without chemistry homework - at least the first paper or so. I can never understand that [cabbage] until I do it. Of course, when we've been doing the same thing for weeks, it gets ridiculous, since every problem takes upwards of fifteen minutes ...

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I would drop out then. That's bull [cabbage] in my opinion.

I got a 95 on my chemistry final and over a 90 on every other test, without taking notes or doing homework. I'd say that would mean I didn't need it. I'm not going to deny that it's certainly helpful when you don't know what you're doing or need to boost your grade but if you don't need either it's just a nuisance.

While I'm sort of ranting about school I'm going to complain about something else too. Has anyone else ever had notebook check or something similar in any classes? I've had it in my previous two math classes and they annoy me to no end. What the [bleep] does how I organize my stuff have to do with the subject. Absolutely nothing. There's no reason that 10% or whatever of my grade should come from having to have my papers ordered how the teacher wants me to do it.

Oh god yes. And projects that have a grade based on "creativity" and "art". Seriously, I had a newspaper scavenger hunt in my speech class and we had to give a speech on what we found. 40% was for art. In a speech class. For a scavenger hunt. I had to redo it because it was "too small" even though he didn't mention a size and I met the minimum requirements. Not to mention the fact that he wanted a collage of what we found and we can't make a collage with 11x14" poster board. God I hated that class.

Yeah, I know what you mean by that. I don't mind them in some cases (for example we had to make a "spring related" picture in my math class, but using different conics in a graphing program so it actually related to the subject) but they're usually just really dumb. The things that kill me are the "write a poem about..." assignments. Poetry isn't something I like at all. I'm good at it but I have issues with sharing who I am with other people and poetry is always a very personal thing. I don't know, I'm a bit of an educational elitist so anything that isn't efficient usually just bugs me a lot.

If those things really bother you why not seriously consider being homeschooled?

My parents work full time and I'll be done with school soon anyways. I'm really just whining about small stuff though, for the most part I'm actually pretty happy with my school. Good class choices and for the most part good teachers.

I'm a little annoyed that that they made it so seniors couldn't take Graphics (basically you do photoshop work, print and stuff) as of this year when I was saving it for my senior year when I'd actually have room in my schedule for it. I just wish they would have given a little warning on that so I could switch up my schedule and take it junior year.

I'm seriously pissed at my music teacher, still. Music was the only thing keeping me from getting straight As, and music should be my best subject. I definatly outplayed most of the class, for god's sakes, i've been playing drums for the past 3 years (Yes, we're doing the hand drums at school), for the final test I did very well, and I'm probally better then the god damn teacher. (Though, I have never said that).

God damn it -.-

Choosing to be homeschooled is about more than disliking school: it is a choice comprehensive of your entire life and your personality, not to mention your family and friends.

It's not an easy choice, and not for everyone. It worked for me, but I know people that have had to "drop [back] in".

Bumping this thread, as I think most kids will be starting school in about a month or two...

And I don't mean to spoil your summer :P But I think a few of you are ready to start school anyway.

Anyone from high school class of 2010? Where are you going?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :wall: :-X :-(

OT: I rather like school for seeing people I know. On the other hand, I agree that homework and binder checks are BS. If I get binder checks this year, I'll probably un-organize my binder even more just for them.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

I told her there was a secret method to doing it - and there is - but my once nimble and agile fingers were unable to perform because I was under the influence.

I would laugh, not hate. I'm a male. :(

Since when was Ireland an island...? :wall:

I actually have a hobby of licking public toilet seats.
