Are 99's really worth it...

I recently have been wondering if 99 was worth the time and money (money for some skills). Ive been wondering this because recently I have been called a noob because I dont have a 99, even though my stats are reasonably high for a level 85, I have multiple skills in the high 70's and low 80's but this is considered bad even though I can do almost anything with these skills, I really think this is a stupid trend that you are either a 99 or you are not, and this thread is Just a way for me to see the communities opinion on this, and also I would like to question if it is worth it to spend the time for a 99 in a skill such as woodcutting which ATM is my highest skill at 84. Please avoid flaming :thumbsup:

Some 99s are worth it, some aren't. Some skills actually have a use at 99 because of dungeoneering, but even that's debatable. In my opinion, there's no point in getting a 99 like woodcutting unless you really like it or you're trying to max total. The only 99s that are really useful are combat 99s and dungeoneering (for the weapons).

If you play the game to get 99's then no, they aren't worth it. In due time, most everyone is bound to reach atleast one 99, and likely even go beyond them depending on how much they like that particular skill.

First to 99 Farming on 27. September, 2005.

If you're wondering, then maybe for you they're not. 99s (and any other lofty goal like a phat) is only worth it if you enjoy the game and want to make it a goal.

I think lower levels going for things like woodcutting capes are missing the point a bit. At low levels especially there are so many things to do BESIDES 99s that will perhaps be more helpful, like getting chaotic weapons or 88 summoning or the stats for WGS or stats for elite diaries or high enough combat to be effective at bosses or turmoil or extremes or whatever.

 

As you get to a higher level, you find that there are fewer things you NEED and start looking for more stuff to do, and more often than not a skillcape pops up as one of those things that would be cool to have. That's how my slayer cape came about.

Also, if you are looking to get multiple 99's for the +4 prayer bonus, dont bother. Most 99's take a very long time to accuire, and at higher levels having several nearly usless skills (cough wooduting) at 99 is a waste of past time that could have been spent doing something more productive, and once you get sw,fc,and ardy 3/4 all other capes are purly for show.

I play for fun and for myself (and for my super-awesome clan). I don't care what others say about me, what, how, when etc. I should train a skill.

I mean, if you think you are doing ok, then keep doing it, you shouldn't listen to other people telling you what to do. It's a game meant to be fun.

 

So, are 99's worth it? Basically what some of the people said above me. If I feel like getting a 99, I do it. I don't really care how I benefit from it. The road to a 99 can be fun. :thumbup:

Yeah, by all means if you enjoy a skill 99 it. I was more talking about low levels who feel like they NEED a 99 for some reason and go through hell to get their fletching cape or whatever so they can feel 1337, when in reality there's nothing noobier looking than a level 90 in an untrimmed fletching cape.

I got 99 herb just cause that way i'd have a stock of overloads and not have to worry about it again. I could see getting a lot of skills to 90 or so to help with dungeoneering though. At 92, you can pot any skill to 105, the maximum level for a door.

I got 99 herb during a bonus xp weekend, getting myself ~750 4 dose overloads in the process. Now I can make strong survivalist potions without first making a naturalist potion, which is one of the few very useful skills to have in Dungeoneering.

Combat skills are worth it. RC is worth it if your in for good money, it eventually comes when you double nats. Agility is useful for running. herblore is very useful, but you dont really need to waste the 5 last levels. or more if you stew. The rest is mostly garbage to get 99 in.

99's are only worth it if you like the skill, it's your goals, it's your game.

 

However, from an objective standpoint, there are certain level 99's that are deemed more 'useful' to have than others, such as 99's in combat skills rather than raw material gathering skills (mining, fishing, hunting).

 

One thing I do believe; You shouldn't stop at level 99. As the Dungeoneering Cape says, "What are you waiting for, keep going!". Stopping at level 99 shows me that you're not interested in the skill, but more interested in the level, or the cape. (Exception would be Summoning, because training Summoning serves no real purpose, but unlocking familiars is the useful part. Using familiars themselves gives mediocre xp)

 

But half of this thread boils down to being called a noob. Seriously, everyone can be a noob for everything. Even if you're maxed, with 20 phat sets and stinking rich, you're still a noob. Noob is not an insult, noob is another word for 'I need attention and I have ran out of arguments'

The reason behind getting 99s is the prestige and confidence that comes with it and in certain cases, might be the opportunity. You can say that is

not worth it but to some ambitious people like myself, it is worth getting a 99.

I agree. Another problem i see with the whole 99 situation is that in past years a 99 was an achievement. Now it's a standard. Some people think that if you don't have a 99 and are of a certain combat lvl something is wrong with you and you are playing the game wrong. I noticed this when my friend decided to go for 99 fletching. When i asked him why he responded, "Well it's an easy 99 and i don't have one yet."

 

The entire time he was training it he complained how annoying it was and how he hated the skill. Worst yet, this thinking seems to be spreading :-| .

At 92, you can pot any skill to 105, the maximum level for a door.

 

Wrong.

 

A strong pot raises 6% of your level + 6 levels.

 

6% of 92 = 5

 

6+5 = 11

 

92+11 = 103.

Basically all that's need to be said.

 

People have set "having a 99" to be this big deal. In my opinion, having nice, well rounded skills like yourself is the way to go. I can't tell you how many people just max out their melee/combat stats and have terrible other wise skills. But yes, it's all about what you enjoy. In the long run, you'll be able to do more spending your time rounding out your skills then spending the effort on one skill and being limited to that. Keep doing what you're doing and the 99s will come in time :)

99s have a meaning when you enjoy the skill or you wish to experience the "journey" to 99

 

Going for a 99 because of a cape is sad, in my opinion.Do you really think hundreds of hours is worth a coloured obsidian cape? I stopped at 99 dungeoneering because of warped floors, btw
