  1. Frankly most of my knowledge of outside religions comes from religious debates. I never knew what scientology was until the first thread on it. There's a difference between blatant unnecessary attacks and a good debate. I get upset when people bash my faith (Catholic). But one time I read a well educated post on the "is god real thread" about how a certain miracle I had posted simply is not conclusive. My first reaction: "what an idiot". Then I read it.Then I realized how sound the argument was and couldn't think of anything to counter it. In the end I sat at my computer in awe at what a fine debater the poster was. A majority of these posts on scientology are actually very educated and sound arguments. If the need be, remove the stupid ones. "Scientology is gay". "Scientology is greedy". We can do without those. But just because a few people will get upset over a debate, it doesn't mean it shouldn't happen. As a catholic, I'd rather have someone post an educated post questioning my faith where I can go back and explain whatever reason there be for whatever they're explaining rather than dealing with "If god is real why does he let disasters happen" type posts.
  2. I'm not sure if it's too late to give advice... but next time try writing notes twice. That's right, read a section, take notes, then rewrite the notes exactly. If you want to save paper or don't feel like rewriting, go on the computer and type it repeatedly. It helps keep things in your head. As for on the spot last minute studying... skimming is all I can think of. There's a reason the idea of studying is long term and not last second, there is no "magic technique" to instant memorization unless you have a photographic memory.
  3. I've never solved a Rubik's cube and probably never will. I hate those things. I suck at logic puzzles in general.
  4. If I'm not mistaken, several tipiters have come incredibly close to maxing out on f2p (forsakenmage is one of them I believe). So watch where you put those "they have no lives" comments, they won't be taken nicely on the oldest Runescape fansite, where many of the users are f2p veterans who have almost met such high goals. As some have said, syzygy already accomplished it, and mandark got pretty dang close along with a few others.
  5. Well I don't think buying missed holiday items would be a bad idea, but then players will come up with all kinds of conspiracies that Jagex just wants extra money. Mods stated way back during the RWT war that they would not tolerate people buying their way to the top with real world cash. They said they did not want real life wealth to influence success in the game. First off, for the item to be worth anything in real life it has to be something really fancy. A new colored cav won't cut it, it has to be something so show-offy that anyone with spare cash (or daddy's credit card) will want it. That creates the problem that players who want such an awesome item need to pay extra for it, and it will simply lead to rants, people becoming careless with their money, and negative views at jagex. I don't see what's wrong with a game that's different from a lot of the other ones. For many games you can buy expansion packs and whatnot as extras to become more powerful or more of a showoff. Runescape is one of the few games where real life wealth (and daddy's credit card) has little effect.
  6. Limpbizket is right. A discussion board is the last place to get unbiased views on such a controversial subject. I'll try to stay neutral for now (even though my gut is screaming at me to yell expletives at Tom Cruise and L. Ron Hubbard). Frankly, I don't think many people actually believe the whole Lord Xenu thing, scientology seems more into lawsuits and mandatory donations (an oxymoron if I ever heard one!) than to spreading the good news. Now if anyone actually believes the whole Lord Xenu thing, fine. I won't bash your faith if you don't bash mine (actually, I really want to bash your faith. But I'll restrain myself for now :) ). Wikipedia seems to be the only thing remotely close to a neutral perspective on scientology at this point. The internet is either for scientology (as in scientology's websites) or against it (as a majority of the internet and the blogs that scientology is trying to hush). I'm fairly certain there are no known scientologists on tif (if there are, don't be afraid to come out. It'd be interesting to hear another view for once), so good luck getting accurate, neutral beliefs out of anything but wiki.
  7. Damn, so many people thought of the XKCD when they read this? I thought it was just me. I laughed when I thought of that comic... I think Youtube is using this to reduce expletive comments. You know, you type in a flame-filled swear-mongering rant at a youtuber with your volume rather up and your mother in the room, and all of a sudden it's played back at you "YOU FILTHY [expletive] MOTHER OF [expletive] CONSERVATIVE [expletive] LYING, STUPID, HEARTLESS PIECE OF [obscure expletive] NINNY-HEADED TWIT!!!" and your mother basically passes out. It might actually help. EDIT: just tried it out, it's pretty screwed up for me. The voice talkes so quickly I can't understand anything, it sounds sort of like a high-pitched whoopee cushion. If I post a long comment, it doesn't say anything at all. GF audio button.
  8. I have a few friends with really high metabolic rates who eat like pigs and manage to keep their shape. I'm actually mildly jealous, I have a bit of belly fat I'm trying to lose. Been trying to diet, but it gets annoying when they're feasting on pizza and chips every lunch right in front of me when I have my little sandwich.
  9. Meh, I live in Chicago. The cubs have their own theme song here made by energetic fans and played on the radio every time a game comes up. "Go cubs go... GO CUBS GO! Hey chicago, whad'dya say? the Cubs are gonna win today. Go Cubs go...." Have to admit, it's pretty catchy, but annoying. The cubs are a huge deal in my neighborhood, the morning announcements at our school was all about how the cubs got swept. I feel really bad for the 90 year old cubs fans in our city who've been waiting for decades to see it happen. One day...
  10. I had a teacher who'd bring candy to class for 8th period. I'd grab a handful and try to sell them to my 9th period class for 5 cents each. Unfortunatly my poor business skills and the fact that I had to do it secretly to avoid being confiscated with the 9th period teacher led to me just giving the candy away every time I got it. I have really bad business skills. If people try to haggle me, I usually end up accepting the haggle because I don't want to lose a sale. I was successful merchanting in Runescape, in part because you don't actually have to see the person. Whenever I try to sell something (usually spare food to friends) I say a certain price is non-negotiable, but in the end I end up lowering my price because the smart customers seem to call my bluffs everytime. It's ridiculous, it's almost like every customer I get is a poker player.
  11. As for the whole skinny chick thing, here's where I stand: -anorexic people who have a MENTAL illness and thus being thin is impossible to avoid: I pity them. Wish I could do something to make their brains realize that thin isnt the way to go. But I'd never date one. -People who starve themselves WITHOUT the mental illness (celebrities, etc): Losers. I and most men around like a little meat on them bones, not skin and bone. It's people like these starving celebrities who cause today's young girls to think going thin is the best way, and we have another generation of self-starvers and self-induced vomiters. If course, I'd never date people like this. As for fat people... personally, I don't defend their fatness because there's always something you can do instead of doing nothing and hoping no one will mind. But it's not like I go around laughing at the fat kids at school or fat people on the street. That's just stupid and sick. The only thing that really bugs me about some fat people is when they blame the food they eat for making them fat. We all eat that unhealthy [cabbage] but not everyone turns out fat. It's your lifestyle that affects it.
  12. Well Phil, you are right. Let's face it, if Rick Astley wins (and he obviously will. The site is so easy to loop votes) it'll be all over youtube, 4chan, and wikipedia (I'm sure there'll be an article about the event, not to mention footnotes in the MTV and other music award articles), and the news. Obviously MTV thought that through, and it doesn't take a genius to realize being "Rick Rolled" is the best thing to ever happen on television. If I'm not mistaken, TNA or WWE or some other wrestling federation had one of their guys rickrolled on TV during one of those little skits they do between matches. It was all over youtube within a day. But whether MTV wants it or not, it's going to happen. Everyone wants to say they were a part of one of the biggest rickrollings in history, and the fact that it's as easy as downloading a loop or just voting every few minutes while browsing the internet, there's no way it's going to stop. It'll be freaking awesome nevertheless 8-) As for the looping, unfortunatly I don't have firefox and that javascript doesn't work for me. So I can't get any of them looping things. But I'll vote every time I stop by the site, so I'll be contributing in small ways ;)
  13. Unfortunatly, species will always be going extinct. We can do things to slow it down and maybe save a few species, but with some of these animals where they're too old to breed, it's a hopeless cause. But I hope humans can help stop these extinctions. Where's Torti when you need her? I bet she'd have something to say about this.
  14. Damn, I HAVE to try that. Sounds fun. Wonder what it's like to run on it. Anyway, might as well contribute to the thread. A few years ago my little brother, my little sister and I were helping my dad shred old bills and other papers he needed to get rid of. We were fascinated by the paper shredder. I guess it was pretty stupid of my dad to let us use the thing, my sister was 5 years old. So we went about 10 minutes shredding bills with no problem. Then my sister puts in a small sheet of paper with some outdated information. She held it a little too close to the shredder, her finger got stuck in it  . So my brother and I screamed, and we were quite little at the time and didn't think of trying to pull her finger out or turning off the machine. So she was screaming, we were screaming, my dad ran into the room and shut off the machine. Her finger was uninjured because of some finger safety device in the machine. We never helped our dad with the shredder since then. :ohnoes:
  15. The more someone tries to grief me, the less I get pissed. Frankly I get more pissed at a nooby incompetent teammate than someone who intentionally tries to sabotage. Don't know why exactly, but I think it's because the sheer effort they put into trying to tick everyone off is laughable. Griefers never get to me : although maybe it's because the only MMO I play besides Runescape is COD4, and griefers aren't too common there. But griefers in rs like castle wars players who betray their teammates? Laughable.
  16. I think the issue closest to our hearts is what we will name our fansite for the game. Thankfully Jagex hasn't tried a mech.it or whatever. We should just make a link to the mech site from the tipit homepage like with LOTRO.
  17. The only thing I forsee a problem with is, as stated in the main post, the zombies. There will be loads of people, and many will die quickly. They'll think it's unfair, they'll run to the bank and grab some more stuff, and come right back in. Just because it's not allowed, doesn't mean people won't do it. Cape switching wasn't allowed in the past either. How will we determine a winner? The losers will just keep coming back in, convinced that their death was unfair and they deserve another shot. Well hopefully some of the organizers of the event will be there to see who cheats and determine when one site has won, but I have a bad feeling this will end in "z0mg [insert site here] cheated! they had zombies!" completely ignoring the fact that every fansite will have zombies. The same thing happened last time with everyone accusing tipit of having cape switchers when clearly half the participants from every sites did the same thing. Nevertheless, I'm excited and crave giving the new fansite Pure Community in this war a taste of how vicious veteran sites can be...
  18. I don't know if it's the camera angle or the guy himself... but that dude's lips are MASSIVE! And the fact that he was stupid enough to take a pic of himself... I think he did it to send it to his friends or something to prove he stole a phone, but didn't realize you could check your account online... Now he's screwed. :
  19. If teens were behind this, they obviously want to show off their loot. So we can expect a youtube video soon where the teens smash the pumpkin with loads of sledgehammers. I for on am going to patrol youtube videos
  20. I did that last year. 4 other kids in my class did it too (and we were a small class). Luckily our teacher was the dumbest science teacher to ever walk the face of the earth, she just checked to see if it was done and we got 100% for originality anyways. I really reccomend you don't do the Diet coke/Mentos thing, it's way too unoriginal (is that a word?)
  21. There are very few explanations as to why someone would steal a giant-[wagon] pumpkin: 1) Idiot teens looking for laughs, then realized they didn't think of how to transport or hide the pumpkin, and promptly get caught. 2) Idiot teens looking for something to destroy that's massive. Took pumpkin, brought home, destroyed it, got rid of pieces. Never caught. 3)Professional criminals who efficiently stole, transported, and hid the pumpkin without leaving any evidence. Perhaps wanted to resell it, or just prove to friends they could steal such a massive thing. Not caught for months. 4) Massive group of unemployed bakers who plan on making pie or bread out of said pumpkin. Never caught, all the evidence was promptly eaten by unsuspecting customers. To steal such a big pumpkin... you're either really stupid or really smart. There's very little in between. Be cool if someone found it though...
  22. http://www.sciencebuddies.org The site name sounds like it's for 5th graders, but it has rather complex experiments for higher grade levels too. There's a science topic wizard tool where you answer a few questions about your experiment and it displays the most relevant experiments based on your interests, due date, subject, and grade level. Very useful :
  23. Heh, call me ignorant and stupid but all the satire shows and news places are where I get my education on current events. The Onion, The Daily Show, Colbert report... I usually can't stand other news channels. I have to have my humor when I learn of an economic crisis or presidential debate.
  24. http://www.theonion.com Is ftw.
  25. I had saved a portion of your wonderful speeches as data for a school report (don't worry, you were cited). Unfortunatly I don't know the thread it came from and it's not the entire thread, just a segment. Hopefully it helps :| [hide=AIDS vs Malaria]-The price of the newest AIDS medication (which doesnt even cure AIDS) is called Atripla. Thirty tablets cost $1,297.61 -The price of the newest malarial medication (which saves the persons life) is called ACT . Thirty tablets cost $29.90 Okay, now lets see what people are spending their donations buying. $700 million are spent on Malaria each year. $15 billion is spent towards AIDS relief. Yes 700 million is a fairly large sum, but more is spent in Iraq in one day. And 15 billion for AIDS? Thats fantastic that people are donating that much, but why people are spending that much on overpriced drugs that just prolong death a few years, when a tenth of that would be enough to essentially stop malaria dead in its tracks? You want a reason why? Well, the fact is most people dont care. They dont care about Malaria because it isnt in Europe, the U.S, or Japan. Its only in far away places like Africa and India. AIDS on the other hand in their country, they might know someone who knows someone with AIDS, and they feel threatened by it so they feel the need to act. So time goes on, and every 30 seconds a child dies from a disease, curable with the that that costs as much as a can of soda, and during this time people continue to donate thousand dollar drugs to people who die in 6 months anyway. But AIDS is not the one to blame, the blame lies on the dual societies of our world. We should easily be able to help both AIDS victims and end Malaria, there is no excuse.[/hide]
