Will there be any impact of duel arena update on rares?

Does anyone remember that Jagex never intended for rares to become a rare and super expensive?

Some do.

But the current mess is Jagex's fault, for burying its collective head in the sand rather than biting the bullet years ago and fixing the problem.

Who cares about a few pixels???? This is a game, you know? a fun way to pass your spare time and to maybe have a chat with people from all over the world if your lucky.

Does anyone remember that Jagex withdrew all seasonal drops for a while because of people making gp out of others with these rares? That was never the intention.. to make some people rich and others not so. Now all season drops are for everyone and untradeable so the only way you dont get one is if you were'nt playing RS at that time.

Rares are fine if you have the cash to spend/waste..and yes i dont have any, surprised anyone? I dont play Rs to make cash/gp i play to enjoy the experience (pun intended).

i totally agree with most of the people, that rares will drop for a bit then rise back to what they were or higher (go back to the release of construction to know what i mean)

people will first rush to sell and rares will fall till they get to a point, settle for a bit, then go straight back up after they realise its alchemy that causes inflation rather than stakers...

its quite true, sell a rare to a shop and you get few few gp. However, sell the same rare to a player and you can expect a fair amount more. Van Gogh (sp) never expected money for his paintings and died poor, but now the art sells for millions - its all down to the buyers choice, and what theyre willing to pay rather than actual material value.

quite true, those little dyed paper hats are indeed pixels, but at the same time they are a status symbol and an achievement...

a game is half as fun without the competition, be it money, skills, or just who has the most original way of killing a cow (rubber chicken ftw ::' )

Remember when there was no offer-x for money, I do! You had to stay in trade for like 15 mins to get a mil. And abck then that mil was worth a lot, not like it is today.

Duuuuude! And you would get logged out for inactivity. That's what I mean, ordinary things people now take for granted was 10x harder before.

Back on topic, I saw people trying to buy santas for 11 mil but no one was selling. People are madly trying to snatch up ultra-cheap rares but no one is selling for 50% the price before the duel update.

Hey, and I resent the word "obssessed" just because people think about the market doesn't mean they spend every waking moment on it.

LoL, I was logged for innactivity more than once during these big trades and sometimes people would change their mind because they didnt want to go through adding all that gold again! Glad someone else was around back then to have experienced it :)

It made those big trades pretty suspenseful though. After all that waiting, hoping the person actually clicks accept. :P

Before the update, staking stands as one of the most awesome income in the game (seems better than 91rc), with this income, stakers could afford rares so they constitute a major portion of the demand on rares, now that staking is down, will rares drop?

Unlikely.

Whilst stakers are probably some of the richest players in the game, they are not actually generating any income.. No new money enters the economy as a result of a stake being won or lost - it is merely a change in the disribution of wealth. Stakers are, therefore, simply efficient collectors of gp.

It is always difficult to predict the impact of any updates on the price of any items within the game, but if even half the number of stakers quit that have threatened to then the supply of rares will also be reduced as they are taken out of the game on retired accounts..

Beautifully said. I couldn't agree more. Though, this recent update has "scared" players into selling off their rares (which in turn has dropped the prices) but it's bound to level out again after people stop panicking.

I am not an expert in the rares market.

I am not an expert in staking.

However I do know that no money is generated by staking, it simply moves it around the game. Every time someone wins 250m at staking, someone loses 250m at staking.

Staking was always about shifting money from bad to good stakers, however staking doesn't generate any money.

In fact, without having to use their spare cash on counter-stakes, the demand for rares could increase.

This means that there will be the same supply but a higher demand. Because of this, I think that rares will, if anything, go up because of staking.

They'll go up by inflation of rares anyway, so i think that the only impact the staking update will have on the rares market is that for a short while the inflation of rares will increase.

actually i think the main reason jagex did this is too remove gp concentration cause 1 guys can have 2billion gp and more so to stop it they destroyed the main aspect of quick earning.

In the matter of rares they are going to fall like hailstones and u wud soon see the phats come dnw to prices below 50mill or even lower cause no one going to buy thme now cause peeps will get the mney hard way and they wud stop wasting it on phats now :)

Party hats are not useless. THey are symbols of wealth, long term playing, etc.

Being a "symbol of wealth" doesn't change the fact that Burger King hats are useless -- i.e., have no use. And they don't.

They are not a sign of long term play, for reasons known to everyone.

They are goals set and acheived by thousands of palyers. They are ways to "store" gps.

Ah, but see, here's the rub.

This "storing GP" thing is at the heart of the matter. If you buy something useless that's worth millions because you want to use it as an "investment" then you should be prepared that sometimes investments lose value.

They look awesome.

They "look awesome"? They are silly little paper hats, like the ones you get from Burger King. They are only "adored" by people because of the cult following that has built up over their rarity.

If they weren't discontinued, people would laugh at anyone who wore one.

But understand also that there are thousands of players that DO like rares.

Yes, because of a combination of brainwashing, a need to show off, and a desire to "keep up with the Joneses".

It's all groupthink phenomena.

Let's say, for example, that I do not like third age armour. Barrows has close to the same stats, if not better, and cost much less. I think third age armour needs a "correction" in price. It is useless, as there is armour that is better and cost less. Third age armour needs to be fixed.

This happens with useful game items all the time. Seen the price of a d square lately? I fail to see your point.

lol noob people like rares because they uhhmmm well ppl like them so dont call ppl liking them a "burger king hat wearing loser"

I couldn't care less about the rare market, one way or the other. This update will send prices spiraling downward, but it will bounce back. It always does.

If the CORPORAL beast is this hard, imagine how hard a GENERAL or COLONEL beast would be. a corporal is not even an admirable rank in armies that use that ranking system.

Yeah, it is a pking minigame, so any arguments anybody makes will probably be biased.

The best way this will end :Everybody just says,"I'm not arguing with you anymore, goodbye."

The worst way this will end: I don't really know, psychological warfare? Worldwide thermonuclear war? Pie eating contest?

my my....

what a nice read over 5 pages...

First off, o/t: rares will sink/have sunk the past days, in the long run they will go up. So people quit.... I pity them to quit over such a think, but it will make rares even rarer. It might take a while, but eventually they will go up again.

*puts flame cloak on*

As for the rest of the discussion, I then to agree with Qeltar. Too many people are too obsessed with intrinsically wothless items -rares that is. Yes, I believe that these items are a (not "the") source for real life trading. They are an investment to some, a sort of achievement cape for some merchanters, a nice looking item for me.

As to the people who say rares are useless, they are NOT. They are a sort of stock, an invetsment. If you invest in a rare (note: not buy it as accomplishment or for looks) you also have to put up with the rollercaoster price changes. So...p-hats are down at them moment because of the DA update. True investors would not whine for their loss, the invest in more because they can buy them "cheap" now, and they will go up in the long term.

As for people quitting over this... So be it. I feel kind of sorry for them, but RS is not about p-hats. It is a MMORG, that has many, many more aspects (combat, skilling, friends etc.) than merching. If it is only 1 thing you like about the game, then consider doing another one of which you enjoy MORE then maybe 1% of its content. Not saying anyone SHOULD quit, not telling anyone what to do, but if you quit the last percent of the game you actually enjoyed after this update, then I think you should have moved along a long time before.

We had something vaguely similar when pure essecnce was brought to the game. Whiners quit, and I think good riddance. There's too much whining around RS about things that have very little to do with RS as a game.

I really doubt that Rares, whips, barrows items and other items will be affected by the GE.

Personally I think the biggest effect will be on raw materials and finished products. Herblore items will be a lot easier to get hold of and sell as finished products for example. Same with other skills. There will be an opening for many new items like specialist food etc. too.

I think it will have a positive effect on the economy, but maybe not at first.

as soon as people reolize this price drop them will start buying, the price always stabalized then goes up, its just a trend I've seen with past rare crashes. Everyone says it wont and then it does. I expect them to go back up, ALOT, with a bit of time, then drop back down to a stable price similar to what it was.

i agree with u wakka.

i believe that rares are crashing partly due to god swords as well, as people are cashing in on their rares to grab a gs

Ok this is what I think from what I have seen and heard.

Many stakers are very mad at jagex for this and plan to retaliate by real world trading themselves, so they sell all the rares they have stockpiled, then sell the gp for real life money. Thus, a ton of new rares that were stockpiled by the stakers enters the market and causes prices to drop from more quantity.

Drop trades...but only if you trusted the other person.

Hmm yes stakers don't generate gp but they do accumulate it. Buying rares requires the accumulation of wealth so they used to be a prime market/buyers for rares but now they are gone. I suppose skillers and collectors will have to buy rares now. Prices will drop over the short term but historically they will go up, depending on other factors. I think when skill capes were introduced many people sold their phats but prices go down, people will spare gp snap up the cheaper rares so in the end it will still go up.

A very interesting read, and I know I am not smart enough to argue most of these points, I will say that the "tulip" market effect queltar refered to is going on right now. People who want rares will now need to actually make money. Staking was the most pathetic, and risky moneymaker, but it allowed people to collect much money fast. Getting a rare will now be a long and tedious process, which makes me happy.

To anwser the question, HELL YA! the price of rares will fall!!!!!

OFF TOPIC: SOOOO glad staking is gone, but I wish the limit was 50k :(

That's what it takes to be a hero, a little gem

of innocence inside of you that makes you want

to believe that there still exists a right and wrong,

that decency will somehow triumph in the end.

I have came to realize, after having every rare (except cracker) that they seem to me to be pointless. I mean, why invest on a online game that could end tomorrow? Playing a game to have fun would be the first priority, i see no sense in "investing" on a game.
