August 10, 200817 yr Duradel very recently gave me my very first skeletal wyvern assignment, and I was a bit confused at what methods to use in slaying these nasty abominations, but after a few high damaging trips and failures, I've discovered something very important. Wyverns use two, possibly three, different types of breath attacks. Of course, most monster guides tell readers to use mage protection, but this topic will prove them wrong. After killing a few wyverns, I noticed that they had different movements and sounds during their attacks. The obvious melee attack is simply a tail swinging strike, but the breath differences aren't so obvious. I've noticed that the wyverns have two completely different audios when using their breath attack. The first audio sounds like a gust of wind. This is their ranged attack. The second audio sounds like an ancient spellbook ice spell hitting without a splash. This is audio represents their dragonbreath attack, and another attack that's potentially magic, and not used often. There are also some slightly different breath attack movements. Whenever the wyvern is going to use its ranged attack, you don't really see any movement, you just hear the wind sound. However, when the wyvern uses its dragonfire attack, you see a light bluish color spray from its mouth, and light blue blast (similar to a Bolt spell hitting without a splash) around your character's body. There is also the attack discussed earlier that has the same audio as the dragonbreath, but instead, there's a glowing blue light from the center of the wyvern's body as it jumps in the air. Again, I'm not sure if this is a magic attack or not. Therefore, my conclusion for the best way of meleeing wyverns is to use the melee prayer, since their tail strike hits at a far higher percentage than their ranged attack (which almost never hits) when wearing metallic armor. The currently unknown "mage" attack rarely ever hits to be much of a factor. If ranging, use the ranged prayer to defend your character if he or she is being assailed. The icy breath will still do quite a bit of damage, but if anyone can confirm that a dragonfire shield with an antifire potion blocks this out, it would be greatly appreciated.
August 10, 200817 yr I never knew this, can you 100% confirm? That is a pretty big discovery.
August 10, 200817 yr Hmm, I'll go try this out sometime. Sounds like a nice little discovery though. Thanks! :D
August 10, 200817 yr Author This theory will only prolong your stay if you use its methods. I tried killing the first few wyverns with dragonhide and took damage much more quickly than when I was wearing my metallic armor. In any case, I was still took most of the damage from the icy breath. I don't have a dragonfire shield, so I couldn't try out using an antifire.
August 10, 200817 yr anti fires wont work  atleast they didn't when I tested them around a month ago
August 10, 200817 yr If ranging, use the ranged prayer to defend your character if he or she is being assailed. Alternatively use the safespot. Nice find though :geek:
August 10, 200817 yr I wouldn't say I knew about the breath attacks, but I will say my friend and I tried all the different prays, and nothing seemed to really work better than the other. -Man, I really do love Runescape, and I'm sure if it was a real person I would of asked it to marry me by now.
August 10, 200817 yr I've always killed them using protect from melee while wearing armour with magic defence. (When using melee myself.) Seems rather foolish to do anything else.
August 10, 200817 yr Wyverns have three different styles of attack. Melee, Ranged, and IceBreath. Of the three, Icebreath is the worst. Icebreath will almost always inflict damage, and it can freeze you. While you are frozen, you will be unable to move or attack. I haven't experienced the Melee attack much, but I havent seen it do anything dangerous. Link to guide: viewtopic.php?f=180&t=744300 It has been noted before, but should be in bestiary. I had a piece of grass on my shoe, and she wiped that off. Yeah. Impressive, eh? That's probably the closest I've ever been to having sex. :P
August 10, 200817 yr Eh I suppose I could see where not many people know about this. However your best option has always been taking prossy and melee praying and using piety to speed right through them. Tasks are always doable in one trip now as long as you have a decent summoning level, 2 trips needed for those without a yak/tort and a pony. Perhaps people with lower level summoning could do a whole wyverns task in one trip like this using just a tort and bunyip, but thats something I have yet to see. But yes, wyverns have just as much of a range attack as the king black dragon does, which is to say that they dont have one. August 10, 200817 yr It's actually just two different attacks. Breath is when he spits, and ranged is when he jumps up and a blue sphere (the orb) is made it it's center. And yeah, People use mage protect I always thought was a bit silly as I always took more damage from Melee. Of course, best way is to just not use any protect. Use a defensive prayer, or offensive to just kill it faster. Do you hate Wyverns or Warped Terrorbirds? Think again! Misunderstood Monsters!Want to become a Champion of Champions like I once was? August 10, 200817 yr *gives cookie to Woodcut Lvr* :) And I can confirm that Wyvern Breath is not affected by Antifire. Salve Amulets do not work too. And sorry Druminator but Wyverns DO have a range attack. You have to pray range to range them for a while until you can safespot, so I know for a fact it's a ranged attack. August 10, 200817 yr For my last trip, I used no pray at all and it seemed to not make a huge difference.

As I mentioned earlier, it hardly surprises me that people have this as one of their common misconceptions of many monsters and slayer monsters that are not commonly slayed. Praying range will never prevent the damage from them seeing as how they DO NOT HAVE A RANGED ATTACK. Merely their breath attack and their melee attack. August 10, 200817 yr I honestly have never gone on a skeletal wyvern task since I have never gotten one, and I really think its pretty odd that i haven't. But, once I do end up getting one, I will see if this is true, although from what I hear from friends, I wouldn't be sure its a completely different attack unless you can tell that the protect prayers give protection over the different types. Look at dragons. They have a multiple animation melee attack, but it is still just that, a melee attack, It just uses a different method of attack (crush, slash, etc. ) 99 Fletching 99 Attack 99 Constitution 99 Cooking 99 StrengthGamertag: H8tebringer
August 10, 200817 yr Very interesting. Something I'll take a look at when I visit them :P. "To do all that one is able to do, is to be a man; to do all that one would like to do, is to be a god." - Napoleon I
August 10, 200817 yr I don't think it's much of a secret... coz there definitely is an attack that we can't avoid and it's not just the icebreath attack so.. :-# Now we just need an all-in-one potion to protect us from any and all dragonbreath
August 10, 200817 yr I found that when meleeing them, I got hit the same with or without pray on (melee hardly ever hits on me) so i dont bother and still get the same amount of kills per trip. Thanks Gradeskip93 for my awesome sig!
August 10, 200817 yr I do 66 in a trip with a fire titan, a terrorbird with food, and two pure sets.(food= swordfish). And no, I dont pray. I use a dfs with guthan plate and verac skirt. My blog

Every time that I have safe spotted them, what I need to do is get pretty far away and ranged protect in order to not take any damage until they are unagressive. With mage, melee or no protection prayer on, you will get damaged. Take that for what it is or whatever it means. -Man, I really do love Runescape, and I'm sure if it was a real person I would of asked it to marry me by now.
August 10, 200817 yr the protect from melee option has been known some time. as for they having a ranged attack with melee/magic. Not so sure, anyway, if they do have a type of ranged attack that we can not tell is a ranged attack, perhaps appears as magical. It would be like the bloodvelds melee/magical attack. Magic delivered with melee. its interesting.
August 10, 200817 yr praying melee instead of magic doesn't make a significant change. i've worn melee armor there once after the drop update and it was a lot worse then bringing dhide.
