Feb 9 2009: The Future of Runescape

I think Mark is joking about his age

It's a good example of him putting his 'not dumbing the humour down' promise into action straight away, with a joke that nobody gets

(please don't kill me Mark).

Your answer.

I lol'd. Andrew is a funny guy.

I've always liked the BTS, so I'm gonna miss it, but I'm optimistic that this year will be a good one for Runescape.

If anything, we see the members version as an expansion pack for those that really love the game and we feel both games are substantive in their own right.

made my day.

May i just say good fight to all the p2pers who've flamed me and said f2p was just a demo? kty.

Personally, just a little peeved off at this comment:

"We are also committed to working with our fans in the RuneScape community to make the game a more enjoyable place to be. We will be running community events, tournaments and JMod participation in-game to provide more support to you and make RuneScape an even better place to be."

Now if that means they are directly competing with the TET, well I'm just not fine with that. While this is a competitive field (event hosting (really it is)) it's still almost a stab in the heart. JMods have been coming to events. Is this because they want to join in on the fun or they were taking notes.

I've already sent in my inquiry. We'll see...

A reflection is just a distorted reality held by glass and your mind.

You can look at it in two ways. Either they will compete with the TET, or they will co-operate with them. I hope it's the latter. :|

Really great first post by the new CEO. I'm happy with all that he mentioned. Yes I'll miss the BTS but I can understand why they can lead to more problems for the team! I just like to have an idea what is coming up!

As the new CEO has been working for Jagex he has probably been thinking about these changes for a while. I'm sure we all at work/school/etc think we can do things better than those in charge, this guy now has a chance to prove it

Nothing mentioned about cutting the crap and giving us more high level content. 92 is halway to 99, but the highest weapon requirements aren't even level 80...

The new CEO sounds somewhat exciting, but doesn't seem to really adress the huge things this game is missing. And, free players getting more content doesn't seem promising...

Who knows whats going to happen though, over the past 6 months theres been so many Jagex "promises" that have been changed around. First, they said we would get one headline update every month, with one smaller update. Then they said they were giving us pictures each month of whats coming next month. Looking forward to a post two months from now saying "We actually lost a lot of small children members, so now the theme of the game is purple dinosaurs!"

We'd also like to clear up a few issues surrounding the free game. RuneScape is different from all other MMOs in that the free game has an epic amount of content (we'd estimate over 2,000 hours worth to get all your skills up to 99 and complete all the quests) and isn't merely a demo for the members version. If anything, we see the members version as an expansion pack for those that really love the game and we feel both games are substantive in their own right. I want to apologise for habitually over-promoting the benefits of membership to our free players. I strongly believe if you love the free game you will equally love the members content and that is sufficient promotion to me. If you can't enjoy the free game in its own right then we're not doing our jobs properly. We will continue to improve the free game and, crucially, make it as fun as possible because we know that this is the way that everyone first discovers RuneScape.

Glad they cleared up that debate by stating that F2P is in fact NOT a demo, just as I and others have been saying for years... =D>

Has anyone heard about the creator Andrew Gower then? I always thought his development of the game was genuine, and I really have enjoyed where he has taken runescape. I would hate to hear he's quasi-pseudo-retiring from making decisions, but I can't blame him either- I would enjoy my millions too.

While some people might be slightly dissapointed at the removal of the BTS, this is actually a very good thing. Something they needed to do a long long time ago.

It appears instead of saying: "this month we will release X, Y and Z on these dates", they are going to just say "we will release X, Y, and Z in the future, and heres some previews and hints on what it will involve."

This gives Jagex:

A) An unlimited time table to not rush projects. Projects will be released when they are done, not on a schedual. (This also eliminates alot of bugs and improves quality)

B) People will be more excited when an update comes because its not expected.

C) Getting feedback from players, as we can give opinions on an update long before it begins into development. (This leads to higher quality updates)

looking at all those important points, I think this new system, new year, and new ideas will be the start of the new age for Runescape.

It looks like its going to be a huge improvement.

This news piece has brought me much more optimism than the past ones have. Now I know talk is usually cheap and actions are what speaks volumes...but I am highly impressed by Mod MMG's efforts to reach out to all RS players out there. His statement about F2P finally is a slap in the face to those who long cried: "F2P is merely just a demo!" While I believe members are fully entitled to enjoy all the benefits they pay for and F2P should be grateful for anything they receive (which I am)...I am glad that they still believe F2P is entitled to enjoy the game just as much. Great first post by the new CEO. Change does look like its coming, all we have to do now is wait and see how much and how well such changes will occur ::'.

PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED. they come to our events, watch us host our events, then use that knowledge to do their own events, without even giving us (or rhq, they did go to one or two of their events as well) any sort of credit at all? PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED.

My contribution:

MMORPGs come and go. In my 24 years of life, there were but 10 where I did not find myself in front of a MUD, a piece of paper, or any number of games for consoles or pc where I took the role of a character as my own. Whether it was the blunt force of an axe, the mind altering powers of a vampire, or even the force of the unseen, I have enjoyed being part of a game where not only were my skills tested but I had to rely on those of others.

For the past 7ish years, Runescape has been a stable that I have more often than not, opted to play in lieu of others. My first character, Skiwee disappeared while I was in college and has not been heard from since (though I would love to have the name back ). Kietaro1 took up the banner and has pushed on to become even greater than his predecessor. Through years of clicking I have nearly arrived at a place where the reliance on other's skills can be put into place.

While other MMORPGs boast hundreds of hours of end game content, Runescape has but a few. Granted it takes much longer for a player to max a Runescape account, high leveled gamers become discontent after being pampered in their early to mid game play. As was admitted, and rightly so, in the address that you [Mr. Mark] made to we, the community, Runescape is labeled a game for children. If not for the sense of accomplishment and ability to problem solve, I would have succumbed to the battering I took from my fellow gamers [from other games] in response to the lack of maturity this game harbors.

With that being said, I would like to know what plans Jagex has in the works to give players high level content. Not necessarily what exactly we may see in development but are there plans to give higher level content to those that have worked hard for their levels?

Continued on next page...

That needs to be fixed as well.

An example may be the lack of use of skills like herblaw after 82 (but really 81 as weapon poison can be picked up from drops), any combat stat of 80+ as all boss monsters can be killed at these levels even if it is easier with higher combat stats, or the entire smithing skill. I understand that combat is limited by 99 hitpoints but why have stats like smithing and fletching been made nearly useless by drop tables? When will we see an influx of items that MUST BE manufactured, once again giving use to these skills?

Overall, I think Jagex has a decent new CEO. Though I don't believe the guy when he says having fun is more important than profit, for Jagex. I think he just wants to keep the players happy, since it'll bring in more cash. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just how companies work.

I doubt JaGeX would earn more by removing video adverts.

I can see your point, but I think it's wrong- considering the amount of free players (not accounts, many accounts are inactive and/or are sub-accounts (as in not mains)), I think they earn quite a lot everyday for the log-ins solo.

And just a side-note: many free players plan to stick to F2P for as long as they play, and never pay for membership (for many reasons), I bet 95-97% of them will keep that promise.

This is gonna be a great year.

So don't let anyone tell you you're not worth the earth,

These streets are your streets, this turf is your turf,

Don't let anyone tell you that you've got to give in,

Cos you can make a difference, you can change everything,

Just let your dreams be your pilot, your imagination your fuel,

Tear up the book and write your own damn rules,

Use all that heart, hope and soul that you've got,

And the love and the rage that you feel in your gut,

And realise that the other world that you're always looking for,

Lies right here in front of us, just outside this door,

And it's up to you to go out there and paint the canvas,

After all, you were put on the earth to do this,

So shine your light so bright that all can see,

Take pride in being whoever the [bleep] you want to be.
