TheStandIn
I usually shut mine down once a week or so. Otherwise I just set it to hibernate so I can start it up quickly.
Furah
Mine only goes off when mum is a [bleep] and turns off my powerboard, which I will kill her for one day (not really,) as my computer is always on when she does that. Apart from that it was only off the day I installed Vista, as I did all the updates I needed then, and none of the updates out now I need. The next time I turn it off will be when I install Windows 7, or if me and my friends can argue enough to decide where our LAN party will be before Tafe starts again.... Gandorf61
Well my laptop is always off every night and whenever I am not home. Turning it off gives it a chance to clear the RAM as well as cool down the computer to prevent overheating. When I get up in the morning I'll turn on my computer and by the time I'm ready to use it, it will be all ready to go. I don't see the point of keeping it on 24/7. Counterclockwork
I have to restart my computer multiple times everyday, its annoying...Mostly because programs I exit out of like games I've downloaded, after I exit them it just burns in the lag for me and then usually makes everything so slow its almost impossable to play it. So I'm forced to restart. Feed meh Cuddles
ClareJonsson
I have a PC acting as a backend PVR that is always on as it records TV programs via a freeview card and lives in our kitchen cupboard. The PC in the bedroom which is nothing more than a front end for the PVR with an MCE remote remains in standby when I am not using it. This PC gets shut down when I am not using as it's a bit of a beast and very power hungry. My Eee PC gets shut down when I am not using it as it boots incredibly fast anyway. PS3 and Wii I keep in standby when not in use. does it harm the computer if you turn it off at night and turn it on during the day? Not at all. It's actually better on it as it cools overnight. The Fan in my PSU stays on for a few minutes after shutdown to cool the system, this helps prolong the life of my PC :) [Assist-X]

InkofDeath
I only turn it off for these reasons: 1. Programs in Windows become too slow from RAM getting clogged 2. There's some 'important' update, or after an installation that requires a restart. 3. To count to 24 seconds and find Ubuntu entirely booted and ready to go, for the pleasure and satisfication of it <-- Recently found out how gratifying it is, lawl. Baconxl
I only restart for updates or if I'll be gone for a week or two. I do put it in standby every night though.
Dracion1
Restart it once a day usually. I tried leaving it on once but it becames horribly slow, and seeing as it takes less than a minute to boot I gave up. "In the beginning, the universe was created. Alal_Pwn
Had this computer on since 9.04 (jaunty) came out... so nearly 4 months idk. My openBSD been on since at least 100 years ago. My computer's power normally costs me about $80 USD a year. I'll live  also, because I mirror most of my downloads, downloading even the largest files takes just a few minutes. So as I am aware that some people leave their Personal Computers on overnight for downloads, I never had a good reason. I flush my Linux-swap every few hours, and my kilowatt-hour output on my bill every month isn't enough to justify hard-booting every morning. TLDR; LINUX DOESN'T NEED REBOOTS BECAUSE IT IS SUPERIOR TO WINDOORS. cool story bro Proud owner of RECON. YES MLG FTFW! will eventually get my recon avvy, deal with it. Will H
I shut it down whenever I know I'm not going to be using it in the next hour or two, and restart when a program requires it. So long as you keep the startup sequence short (via msconfig and having a quickly booting mobo), booting isn't that bad. I even switch off the plug after shutdown to get all of the lights off at night. ~ W ~
Duke_Kaleb
Every night or when I'm not going to be using it for over 4 or so hours (Like when I jaunt off to work). It's not really worth spending that extra money on the electric bill to have it on for no reason. When I'm gone for just a couple of hours at a time - I'll just put it in hibernate mode. That's a super low power state that saves everything to the hard disk so it can quickly be resumed later. Also, it helps to restart your computer a couple of times throughout the day - keeps it fast, and cooled down.
Furah
Also, it helps to restart your computer a couple of times throughout the day - keeps it fast, and cooled down. Every night I thank god for global warming, else my balls would literally freeze off, so I don't worry about heat from my computer, and I never use more than 70% of my RAM. tripsis
The only time I intentionally restart my computer is to switch from Mac to Windows (using Bootcamp, which requires you to restart to switch between the two). Otherwise, it's always on (or "sleeping"). I always have like 50 documents open, some of which are just open for my reference but I don't want/need to save them, so restarting my computer is always a pain. I'd have to go through every document I have open and decide if I want to save it or not.. and I know it sounds stupid, but it's just annoying. Or sometimes I'll have PhotoShop sketches open and I don't want to save it, but I want to keep the sketch for a while to tempt me into finishing it..
