18-Jul-2011 - Cryptic Clue Fest 3 - UPDATED WITH ALL ANSWERS

"There is a test that you must face so I can ensure that you are up to the challenge ahead. The test will be a 'cryptic clue', like those that the infamous Roddeck enjoys with a good cup of tea and a cooked shark. Normally you would need to find out whom you are going to with the clue but for this test you simply need to bring me the correct items."

...Doesn't that make this kind of easy? If I remember right, wasn't figuring out who to bring the items to half the puzzle the last two times?

It means that tomorrows riddle won't involve the locating who to show the items to, and that subsequent days will require you to discover whom to show the items to as well as finding the items.

O_o?

Also, something fun that I noticed, Avalani's forum avatar's URL is http://services.runescape.com/m=avatar-rs/avatar.png?id=10695081

add 1 to the ID value for the full body shot and you get http://services.runescape.com/m=avatar-rs/avatar.png?id=10695082

First clue up (QFC: 199-200-460-62991183)

Day One - "Avalani seeks help"

Ah ha! So you saw my advertisement did you? Roddeck suggested that this would be a good way to find some adventurers that have the necessary skills needed for...

Well, never mind about that for now. I warn you though, the test I've created is incredibly hard. I don't want to sound immodest but when I put my mind to a task the results are often astounding. Don't be too hard on yourself if you fail, I doubt even Roddeck himself would find this easy.

If you happen to see any other adventurers you think are up to my mighty challenge, send them my way and I'll see if they are worthy.

Good luck!

So, you think you're prepared for the test ahead of you? Then get ready for a mind-melting, brain-teasing challenge. I won't judge you if you leave this place a gibbering wreck; just looking at it makes my brain hurt and I created it!

Good luck!

JHF NTRR WXXE PH OLTWM CX UTIX SQOOQMXY, UHFL HWTHWY QWE 3 SHN BTEXY

SOLUTION:

Answer:

You will need to bring me five cabbages, four onions and 3 cow hides.

I don’t see why people get some stumped by these:

You start with 3 letter words as they have a few obvious options:

you

the

and

one

JHF NTRR WXXE PH OLTWM CX UTIX SQOOQMXY, UHFL HWTHWY QWE 3 SHN BTEXY

So we try JHF as y o u:

You NTRR WXXE P-o OLTWM CX UTIX SQOOQMXY, U-ou-L o-WT-o-WY QWE 3 S-o-N BTEXY

P-o is likely to be to and give context U-ou-L is likely to be four, plus if it is four the wording following it must be plural (so Y=s) and QWE must be and to grammatical make sense:

You NTRR n-XX-d to O-r-T-n-M CX f-TIX S-a-OO-a-MX-s, four on-T-ons and 3 S-o-N BT-d-X-s

So now on-T-ons can only be onions, n-XX-d must be need:

You N-i-RR need to O-rin-M C-e fi-I-e S-a-OO-a-M-es, four onions and 3 S-o-N B-ides

So O-rin-M is looking likely to be bring and C-e can only really be me:

You N-i-RR need to bring me fi-I-e S-abbages, four onions and 3 S-o-N B-ides

At this point safe to guess Fi-I-e is five and S-abbages must be cabbages:

You N-i-RR need to bring me five cabbages, four onions and 3 co-N B-ides

Then at this stage co-N must be cow which implies B-ides must be hides:

You wi-RR need to bring me five cabbages, four onions and 3 cow hides

And the rest is kinda obvious RR must be ll:

You will need to bring me five cabbages, four onions and 3 cow hides

Obviously some guess work used, but further threw you get the easier it is to spot mistakes as words become obviously wrong like if u get to:

cebbegds you can hmm looks like cabbages. Lets swap my e's for a and my d's for e

The route through may vary depend on how you guess/where you start.

Two letter words can be a good starting point to, but there's more of them.

And to speed it up pick your starting word for letters that appear a lot (not that it really does much here)

Double letters can help too, thought sometimes misleading (like in cabbage) as often double end letter = L and double letter in the middle, especially in 4 letter words will be EE or OO

Also looking for repeating end letters across many words can help as they are likely if paired to be ED or singular to be S

But any way you go its rather obvious early on whether words are appearing or not.

Oh and since its rs cryptic cluefest of items to bring its also kinda obvious to look out for words that are numbers and F2P easily obtained runescape items

Oh and cryptograms don't need a cipher unless they are complicated. Basic substitution cryptograms never have a cipher unless aimed at like 5 yr olds

Answer:

I'm curious about how you got the answer. Usually cryptograms have keys

JHF NTRR WXXE PH OLTWM CX UTIX SQOOQMXY, UHFL HWTHWY QWE 3 SHN BTEXY

3 SHN BTEXY obviously means that you need to bring 3 items -> 3 XXX XXXXs . It also had to be a cheap f2p item. Raw items and air runes were out of question because they wouldn't use a two letter word that ends in A or I. ( Both SHN and PH have the letter H in them). I figured that H would most likely be O and just guessed the right item after that.

I don’t see why people get some stumped by these:

You start with 3 letter words as they have a few obvious options:

Aha thanks got it after the 'you' suggestion, I was getting brain paralyzed with can, the, and for. You just never ever crossed the mind path.

I think what irked me the most, was the last item in the cryp was 2 words when everywhere else it is one word, so looking through the directory for a 3 letter and 5 letter item did not work =[

Cryptograms rank right next to anagrams as things that just not click, I really hope like the anagram in the previous this will be the only one I will need help with =D

That was hard?

Ciphers are usually your opening move in a puzzle fight...

me english teacher would have something to say about the mixed use of numbers there

so are we gonna speculate on who the mysterious figure is or the ominous message?

Day 2:

Day Two - "The Stone Tablet"

Avalani, daughter of the renowned gardener Gustav shunned life amongst the flowers to follow in her brother "Tim the Wizard"'s footsteps, although she wasn't as interested in Fire Strikes. Little did she know where this path would lead; certainly not to years of research into a non-functional portal located at the Clan Camp. She just couldn't shake the feeling that it was somehow significant.

All knowledge of the portal had disappeared into history and legend. Some say it was actually part of a magic mirror that was smashed after Guthix asked if he was the most beautiful in the land, while others thought that maybe the famed artist Goldy Andsworthy had created it centuries ago. But how does this tie into Avalani's request for help? You shall soon see...

Congratulations on solving the puzzle I gave you, I'm impressed that you managed to solve it so quickly. You are clearly the person I'm looking for to help me!

It's been three weeks since I was given this strange tablet and I'm still no closer to understanding the meaning behind the text shown. It was given to me by a most peculiar stranger. All they said to me was "Justice through his judgement". Useless really, why can't people be more direct? Why is there a need to be so mysterious?

Anyway, to the task at hand; here is the text shown on the stone tablet that I've transcribed for these 'forums'. Can you make anything of it? I certainly can't.

Across I1 (5 letters) - A wooden way of making food

Across A3 (4 letters) - A miner necessity for transporting

Across K8 (3 letters) - A legal travel document

Across I10 (3 letters) - I hear you really have to work for this vessel

Across A6 (3 letters) - Initially an internal document that helps

Across I3 (5 letters) - A stone who sells cold chocolate

Across C2 (4 letters) - Forward is not how you wear this cape

Down K5 (7 letters) - The skill that never was

Down G3 (5 letters) - Rune, Dragon, God, all warriors need one

Down D1 (3 letters) - A cradle's owner in start of a disaster

Down E5 (6 letters) - I hear a musical piece that has a ball

Oh, I almost forgot to mention; when I was examining the tablet I had a strange vision. Perhaps it will mean something to you. I'm quite good with a paintbrush, if I do say so myself.

Why can't the Big Bang be done by the hand of God?

It could have, but it is next to impossible because it also could have been caused by the flying spaghetti monster, or one of the other infinite number of deity possibilities.
