The Evolution of Combat: BETA discussion

I think I like the little pop-up bar, but I also think it should be placed in the upper middle on the screen, way more condensed, along with the ability to toggle its presence.

I think the popup should be somewhere less intrusive, WAY more condensed, and maybe transparent.

Sort of like the new (since January/last november I forget) xp counter which is just numbers in the corner

Sort of like this:

They come as reward books which you can allocate freely.

Only to combat related stats (i.e. attack, magic, strength , range, defence, prayer, constitution, summoning, slayer and herblore). I'm not sure how herblore can be combat related and like smithing, crafting, dungeoneering and fletching isn't?

I'm not sure why, but that looks a bit photoshopped...

When is the xp being transferred?

i got a daily task on normal servers but also one on the beta server , can i do both?

Complete this and you'll be sent a tasty XP reward in the live game (equivalent to 10 times the XP you'd get from a Jack of Trades aura) on the week commencing with the 19th of November 2012.

It's a reading rainbowwww.

The combat tutorial was alright. Just teaches basics on how abilities work against mobs you can normally one-hit anyway. You use the same combat style against an enemy and it doesn't go into hybriding or anything useful.

Also you do do both tasks, but doing the 1 in beta won't achieve anything as no xp gained inside the beta is transfered to the live game.

Ugh the popup is hideous. It takes up a massive amount of the screen and it's right above center @_@ Not everyone can do a 24+" monitor setup, good lord.

And I thought for sure since they were getting EXP and GE data, they'd produce GP/XP charts on their own. From what little screenies I've seen, it looks like they hadn't. Shocker.

Little problem with the academy, I just completed it, but because of some lag I clicked on a lot of things all at the same time, thus closing the feedback pop up Jagex told us about. Does anyone know where to find it again? I redid the last section of the tutorial, spoke to Deathknell, but no option to complete the feedback. And I could use some free experience. :s

Imphide, spider silk, carapace and batwing seem to be 100% drops from imps, giant spiders, cockroaches (killed soldiers, dunno about workers, but not drones), and giant bats respectively.

4 hides to craft the new dragonhide shields.

In terms of the new mage equipment, it's 1 hide per boots/gloves, 2 for headgear/legs, 3 for body, 2/3/4 for spider/imp/bat book/wand, and 4 for shield.

I can confirm the 100% drops for imps and giant spiders (including level 2 ones). Cockroaches do not drop carapaces on F2P worlds, and giant bats can't be tested for obvious reasons.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I can also confirm that the guy that made the inventory icons for the hides was lazy.

Because extreme potions are untradeable and can be an advantage in PvP combat. Whereas fletching, smithing, crafting does not because there are no high-leveled armours/equipments associated with these skills that are untradeable to other players.

Dungeoneering is debatable because of chaotics, and would be ambiguous because not everyone who is 80 dungeoneering would possess chaotics, and not everyone who has 200K tokens would spend them on chaotics. Not to mention chaotics are only obtainable at 80 dungeoneering at a minimum. So maybe Jagex decided to leave it out, not too much of a problem anyway. Chaotics are visible and extreme potions aren't, so just don't pick fights with chaotic if you don't want to be at an disadvantage.

GE data would be included in the charts, except that there's no GE data for beta worlds.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Well that kinda defeats the purpose of Beta testing it, then.

Not really because Jagex are perfectly capable of sufficiently beta testing that feature on their own. All they need to do if go on a test server pull up serval of the interfaces and go hmm yes the graphs are working.

Plus that feature isn't even particularly MEANT to be beta-test content, it was in BTS for this month the fact it went into the beta game is pure coincidental and probably only occurred because they didn't want to bother coding all the new crafting etc. items into the old interfaces. I do wonder if when make-x comes to live game it's going to bring all the imphides etc with it, afterall it makes sense to let most (if not all) of the new armours filter into the game a bit before the update comes.

The new make-x interface shows far too much information and is flashy as hell.

It shouldn't show things like xp gain, cost, p2p status or alternatives that aren't possible (like cleaning guam when you're holding grimy torstol only). Those should be in the skill guide, far away from what people use daily.

It's possible to clean a single herb, and I presume also cut a single gem etc. without navigation the interface but it still brings up that horrid progress bar which covers the screen too much.

Imo, the current system is fine, and just needs to be modified a little bit to allow the making of single items (cutting one gem for example). The second small fix it needs is that it must be optional. You should be able to disable the make-x system in favour of single items for every item individually.

As someone who does little to no PvP but a lot of PvM I fail to see how this new system is going to improve combat. We have all these new fancy abilities yet after a few months or so the most effective hot bar will be discovered and stuck to. From here on it's back to the combat grind of using these same abilities over and over again. I don't see how it differs from the current system of pray, spec and attack. Instead of pressing F1 and F3 throughout a kill I'll simply be pressing 1-9 whenever an ability has cooled down or I need to eat. This new system just seems like a large inconvenience to me. I guess it will make PvP a lot more interesting though.
