90 Slayer, 89 summoning, the fun has begun
Mischlings commented on Mischlings's blog entry in Always up to something
I use a war tortoise and monkfish to tank irons so that I can bank all the bones. It's a fairly large sum of money. -
If you can afford to spend 70m on a spec weapon, get SGS. I can do a large number of tasks without food or a healing familiar using only those specs, and if you use any sort of prayers on task it becomes much more valuable. If not, then using EE or DDS depending on whether or not you need the extra healing on task. As for Bork, I never have a problem killing him using DDS, whip, proselyte, Soul Wars Cape, and so forth. Piety and protect melee should last the entire fight, and just bring a few monkfish to heal the damage done by the Dagon'hai and (perhaps) the ork legions. That and kill the ork legions -- only monster other than Bork with a 100% charm drop rate.

This thread is simple: how often do you die, and why do you die that often? If you die all the time, is it because of boss hunting or similar? If you never die, are you a peaceful skiller and avoid combat whenever possible? As for me, I rarely die, but recently have decided to learn to kill Tormented Demons, which has led to me dying about daily (I get piled often while luring and just recently realized that playing with sounds on is a good idea). Other than that, I mostly do slayer and I never die there.

Why Runescape needs instanced bosses.
Mischlings replied to Lugia_Lvl138's topic in General Discussion
I think that the best way to fix this mess would be the rework some of the older bosses so that their drops are worthwhile again (something like giving the KQ claws -- much more difficult to solo than TDs and probably wouldn't cause more of a price drop than an initial panic). Really, GWD, corp, TDs, and DKs are the only "bosses" that people seem to fight for real profit on a regular basis -- give the KQ, CE, and KBD more reason to be fought and it'll thin out a bit. I'm not saying that my exact idea should be used because I haven't really thought out exactly how much of an impact it would have on the market for those items, but something like that should be done. These bosses aren't being fought for the simple fact that they're not worth the time -- just worth doing for the fun factor. -
If that's the case, you should probably try timing when you drink it to coincide with a time that you're not in combat. Though, I would think that in a lot of situations it'd be too much hassle to really be worth it. You'll just have to be at ~400 instead of ~900 -- depending on where you are, that might not be a problem (slayer tasks jump out as a place where that would be true). (Just as a note, I'm not talking from experience, just conjecture -- I don't have the level for overloads yet.)

I just went to test out that equation today (since the numbers seemed off -- I just attributed it to using SGS specs) and I realized an error. I did some testing and found out that the prayer bonus affects prayer drain differently. I apologize for all the errors, but I can now say with confidence that it should be (k*(1+b/30)). I didn't realize the error because the testing I did was with protection prayers, and the two formulas work just the same for those prayers. Again, I'm sorry for all the errors with this equation, but it should be correct now.

To be more specific, each spec lowers its defence by 5%, meaning that two specs lowers its defence to 90.25% (assuming that it reduces defence by 5% of the current level, which I think is fair). It's not huge like SWH would be, but it's a lot cheaper.

This is what I've changed it to based on what people have said here (haven't gotten runite bolts to test yet and I know the potions are probably in the wrong proportion). Are there any other glaring mistakes in what I have here or does it look good?
-
I've done somewhere around 7 trips, 6 using war tortoise and sharks and this one using unicorn. No idea how many kills, I'd guess 40-50ish. Gear: Full Void, fury, soul wars cape, dragon boots, archer ring, Rune crossbow/SGS/Darklight, broad bolts. If you can, use fire cape, ranger boots, and runite bolts instead I have fire cape, but I would think that prayer is more important there, which is why I used the soul wars cape. I have snakeskin instead of ranger boots -- would those work? I'll look into using runite bolts -- I have a ton of broad bolts and they work really well for little loss, but I'll get some runite bolts and test them.

Problem is, I had unicorn and SGS and still was taking a beating. It seemed like every time I switched prayers the first attack would hit and hit hard, and even between the two I couldn't really keep up.

So, earlier today I did my first TD trip after gaining 89 summoning on Friday. Eager to try out the unicorn, I went in and managed to find a world where the north spot was empty. I lured the demons properly and started killing them. About the fifth kill, I started taking damage at a high rate. I managed to switch prayers quickly, but it seemed that no matter what they still managed to get one huge (200+) hit on me before I could switch, and my unicorn just couldn't keep up, making this the second time that I've died there (first time was some jackass luring the demons on me). Same thing happened to me a few kills earlier, which caused me to use up all the sharks I'd brought with me in case of emergency. Is it common to die often here? I wouldn't think that I'd be having this much trouble with 94 defence and good prayer switching skills. Did I just hit a streak of bad luck? Or is there something that I need to work on?

90 Slayer, 89 summoning, the fun has begun
Mischlings commented on Mischlings's blog entry in Always up to something
Maybe it's because I'm so biased towards slayer that I haven't used the unicorn much. I can only see myself using the unicorn at Waterfiends and maybe Strykewyrms, but I'm not completely sure. I guess I'd have to move up to boss hunting (like TDs) before I'd really get a lot of use out of it. -
Yeah..I think ppl think because a monster is WEAK to crush it means nothing else can hit it lol. No, I don't think that at all. It's just that I've been there with a whip, and I've been there with a Z spear set to crush, and Z spear was far superior in speed. Yes, but Z spear on crush can't train defence or attack, which is what he asked.

While working on a spreadsheet, I discovered a grave error in the formula that I posted on the last page. It should be: doses/hr=3600/((FLOOR(L/4)+7)*(k+b/10)) k=seconds/point (found here) b=prayer bonus L=prayer level Derived from these equations: Points/dose=(L/4+7) Points/hr=3600/(k+b/10) I realized just yesterday that I had made an error. The formula that I listed above should work without a problem now -- I use it all the time to determine what supplies I need to take for a slayer task and it always works for me.

Got summoning to 89 from 74 yesterday and I've put the geyser titan to use in slayer. Am I the only person who finds a geyser titan more useful than a unicorn, or do I just need to use the unicorn more before I come to that conclusion?
-
One positive that I see to this is the ability to fight someone for a training spot. Outside of that, however, I don't see all that much reason for them, although they would be fun.
-
You could always use a whip. It's not that horrible.
-
Any combat situation that involves dragons to help take the bones back (either using it as a beast of burden or using the scrolls to bank) Any combat (or non-combat) situation when you need to bring extra supplies (cheaper than a war tortoise pouch, so if you need more space than a terrorbird, use a yak) I know that's relatively general, but I think you get the gist. Any time that you would use a war tortoise, you should use a yak. I'm not exactly sure how efficient using the scroll is, but I would think that it can be extremely useful. Maybe someone who actually has a yak can help you more.

I tried looking up that video! but I couldnt open it for some reason. anyways how old is that video? because jagex updated superheating to take up 3 game ticks instead of 2, meaning absolutely no more than 2000 gold ores can be superheated per hour. maybe Zarfot's video is just old, and that's why he was able to do 2100 per hour. you can of course, cast superheat, high alchemy, and enchant spells simultaneously for extra magic xp with your smithing xp. No, it's superheating AND smelting at the same time, meaning that it'll go faster than just either on its own. There's a different video which you're thinking of in which he manages to superheat at an astounding rate, but this one is still possible as far as I know. -
Okay, I just had these ideas within the last couple days, so I haven't had any time to do much more than think of the basic mechanics to how they work. 1) Slight change to GE offers -- allow offers of any price No, I'm not asking for the GE to allow any price to go through. What I'm looking for is the ability to make an offer outside of the price ranges (for example, a buy offer below the current minimum or a sell offer above the current maximum). These offers would be speculative -- they wouldn't be able to go through unless the price boundaries changed. Why do I think it would be needed? It would make it easier to get items at various prices -- if I wanted to sell a whip for 3.5 million, I wouldn't have to check every day to see if the price had gone up -- instead, I'd just put in the offer and wait. Same would be possible with catching items with falling prices. 2) Change to combat familiars -- "Fight with me" Add one button to the summoning interface (no idea on the symbol) called "Fight with me". When this is activated, your familiar will join you in battle immediately after you start attacking a monster -- no need to mess around with calling or manually making it attack. The AI on combat familiars is pretty bad and a fix like this should be simple and is probably the best overall solution.

Okay, as for the question of addy plates vs. addy bolts, plates win assuming 1m per hour. Adamant bar: 3111gp Adamant platebody: 9809gp Adamant bolts (unf): 252 each. In one hour, you can make 600 plate bodies, translating to 187.5k xp. It costs a total of 3,447,600gp. You can make 10125 bolts in that time (average rate), translating to 63,281xp. It costs 598,387gp. Add the 1m you gave up by smithing instead of making money, and the methods cost 4,447,600 and 1,598,387 per hour respectively. Dividing that by the xp gained from each method means that making plates costs 23.7 gp/xp and making bolts costs 25.26 gp/xp (using the idea of opportunity cost, not looking at just the money), meaning that addy plates are more efficient. I'm not sure the rate of smelting gold, but my gut tells me that it would probably be more efficient. Morionic probably has the answer. -

I could figure this out, I just have one question: what do you value your time at? Basically, what is the most money you can make per hour? I'd need that for any calculations. -
74-89 summoning. Now I just need a chance to use my unicorn and geyser titan. I may or may not get 90 slayer by the time the weekend is over. Depends entirely on the tasks that I get. My multiplier is down to 1.4, so I'm just doing the things that I would normally do.
