Tip.it Times Presents: Reasons to hate Jagex!

Recommended Posts

I don't think many people know the main cause of mass-autoing; the bots are mainly the result of poverty in Asia, where businesses recruit people to maintain bots or play RS intensively for money. I think there is a news article on this on the main site, but I haven't checked in a while. Then again, its quite inevitable, with poor people in Asia looking everywhere for jobs, however undignified the jobs might be.

This is public ignorance. But with so many little kids playing on RS these days, that too is quite inevitable.

My take on this article: This article implies the assumption that autoers just exist for gain, but unfortunately does not say why there are so many autoers. This is a nice and flowing article with great transitions between points. The author's tone is light and casual, fitting for one defending Jagex with a somewhat I-am-here-to-enlighten-you sort of air. On the other hand, it's really obvious that people don't really "hate" Jagex, you know. I'm pretty sure most kids would be more concerned with daily problems in school with their teachers and with their parents as to divert hate to a game. Surely a kid won't hate the maker of a game is they love the game so much to play it?

On 12/10/07, Jagex emerged victorious from their war against the mechanical swarms of Real World Traders.

But in the battle, we, the spectators, lost one of our closest friends...

I feel that this article misses the point entirely.

Ahhhhhhhhh, attack of the roses......gaaaaaaaaaaahhh, I'm bleeding.

A very vicious attack by a rose indeed. I like your post. Excellent argument. In fact, it was much more convincing that the editorial.

Double post. Sorry.

There are very few articles in regard to Jagex. Why would you want Tip.It to be full of complaints?

I don't want to see it "full of complaints", but the opposite isn't good either. Nothing is improved by saying "yay, great job!" -- especially when it isn't true.

Granted that not all complaints are valid, but many are. I think a fan site should be independent and objective, and two consecutive editorials defending Jagex strikes me as odd.

Sorry, but this piece is not an editorial. For the article to be an editorial piece, it would have to be written by the Editor, and this article wasn't. It was written by a guest author, a Tip.It Community member just like you. And besides, even if the article HAD been written by the Editor, his or her opinons don't necessarily reflect those of Tip.It or its staff. Or didn't you notice the disclaimer at the top of the Times page????

Tip.It Times[/url]":135h63zk]The views expressed in these articles by The Editor or any author do not necessarily represent those of Tip.It or our staff.

In any event, this article was written and submitted by someone who is not connected to Tip.It it any way - other than being part of the community. So you certainly can't lay his opinions and views at Tip.It's door. And if you would like the community to see the other side of the story and hear your arguments, why don't you write an article and submit it? The Crew can only publish various points of view if readers take the time to submit them!

Good good *short spurts of loud laughter*, Now you must lean to control you anger.

Makes my point (and yours) rather clearly I think, thats exactly what people who feel like getting mad a Jagex need to do =D> .

Also, the first qoute in my siggy is an almost exact summary of the last paragraph :).

"300 programmers make their futile but glorious last stand against 1000000 angry players in The battle of Misthalin. They fight for honor, glory and new content sacrificing themselves so that their game may live on. This is Madness! This Is JAGEEEX!"

Hate is such a strong word that I don't like to use, instead i use dislike or don't like. I look at people "hating Runescape" as if they have their own political positions such as me being a liberal Runescaper, conservative Runescaper, socialist Runescaper, independent, and I hope their aren't any Communist Runescaper, but there's a few out there. There is such a diversity in each individual's viewpoints about Runescape am I correct?

I agreed that JaGex had banned 1k + of autoing accounts, however, each and everyday, more and more bots are being created, and who ever says IP addresses being banned, is like having Homeland Security going through our emails for protection and privacy of their duties. :-#

We'll bite our fingers :ohnoes: and others we worry :uhh: and the rest we are satisified what JaGex is doing :P . Although, I still criticize about f2p not having enough updates, and I weep for more bank space and less autoers, that's why I don't go on anymore. Heh heh, I'm a retired runescaper now.

In response to the did you know item, couldn't jagex release special clothing specifically designed to fool the botting software so that players could lead all manner of bots on wild goose chases with minimal effort and high success? It would be a fun way to get involved in fighting bots and would have no negative effects (I can think of) on real players. Of course, the programs would just become more sophisticated, but it would be awesome while it lasted :D

Kiara_Kat, hmm good point that's its not an editorial but rather a guest article. Okies, I get it.

I feel that this article misses the point entirely.

Thank you.

Even if it's not worth mentioning that Jagex did something decent, undeserved praise is harmless enough, and this is the Internet, where pointless articles are 10 for a dime :-)

Alright, I am glad to see you can take criticism without wigging out. I guess I just feel differently, to me the shop update is a very minor one that barely affects RS.

They couldn't do that anyway. In our home, 3 different people play RS from the same computers. How would they know which ones to ban?

I'm tired of these "Jagex doesn't care about RS" comments. I don't think they are aware that Jagex is really trying to remove bots and they may have to sacrifice subscriptions to do so. I'd rather want a game with a bot-free environment than a game with a screwed economy because of bots. Anyway, the article is spot-on about these people. Nice job, editor!! =D> =D> Now, why complain about the new shop update if it cleans the bots? Sure, you may have to find another way to get crafting xp, but there are many ways to crafting. Sadly, time has to be sacrificed to take care of those little s****.

True article, well written. We are a society that loves to criticise and often neglects to pay respect and thanks for the positives. Jagex's efforts in 'fighting' the bots as well as continuing updates is to be applauded - that goes without saying.

Only issue I have is with the Jagex customer support. As I paying member I do not appreciate submitting ban appeals or reports and getting automated responses telling me I was in control of my account when I already have said that or that "Jagex cares", but cannot find the time to answer me. I hear they read these messages but just submit the same response, I think that is lazy service.

Don't get me wrong, I realise that people dont have the time to sift through millions of letters a day, but I think when it comes down to appealing bans, they should take the time of day as well as let the person have the room to submit a real appeal (not restrict their characters so much).

The problem is they dont really mind about that one individual who gets the automated response, because after all loosing their money per month is not an issue since another 5 new members have signed up to take his place. Thus, the 5 year dedicated paying customer has been chewed up and spat out in favor of new money. I believe that is where I get the image of Jagex not caring and where any aspects of 'hate' arise.

NOTE: I haven't been banned, nor received any black marks, its just something I lament at - watching many good friends receive bans, mutes and other punishments for no apparent reason, or one that is very easily and clearly explained (despite not having room to properly do so) but simply ignored with the standard automated "you were in control of the account" response.

Oh, Jagex cares a great deal about RS -- it's how they make money.

It's individual players they don't seem to care a great deal about.

Oh wow, it's been a long time since I've logged onto RuneScape. I *did* notice the new shops interface when I logged on two days ago and I also noticed the shops were devoid of bots. Anything that stops bots is A-OK in my books!

We should all understand, or at least begin to realize that bots are and always will be a continuous nuisance to honest players. Jagex can only tackle one bot problem at a time; in this case they chose shop-bots. In time, Jagex will formulate other bot-stopping methods and gradually integrate it into the game. If you read the Developer Diary regarding the shop update, the Dev Team also improved the underlying shop system, generalizing the system so that it'll be easier to introduce new specialty shops. Which is a good thing since this will make the Dev Team's process of introducing new towns with new shops easier in the future.

Anyways, fewer bots means more space for honest players and retroactively, less server load.

I love the article. I just have one comment concerning what you said about skillers being upset. I have a skiller and I love the shop update. I have plenty of money to get skills without buying them. Herblore is much easier now and so are a few other skills. I make plenty of money by leveling the skills that cannot be bought. If all these other skillers did this instead of buying for lvl 99's they could have just as much fun!

Good article :)

Great read. I know people have accused guest articles as being not as well-written as editor articles in the past, but that was a lovely read, very well done. Some good points were made in there too. This article is something Armadyllo can be proud of having written. Kudos to Armadyllo.

whoever's pulling the strings in Jagex, be it Andrew, Paul or this "Mod Hobagoly" person, isn't just interested in the money

OK... So who is the one really pulling the strings?

= Andrew G (Lead Developer)

= Henrique O (Head of Content)

= Imre J (Head of Content)

= Paul G (Senior Game Designer)

= Mark O (Senior Creative Designer)

And which one is this "mod hobagoly", Henrique O or Imre J?

I rest my case,

Oh, Jagex cares a great deal about RS -- it's how they make money.

It's individual players they don't seem to care a great deal about.

Nice! But when I have to deal with a big organization as a customer, I hardly ever come away impressed with the results. I get my payments mucked up and cancelled, auto-letters that don't suit the circumstances, and the phone lines put me on hold for hours before letting me talk to someone on a different continent who's desperate to sell me something expensive that I don't want.

By comparison, Jagex's dealings with the average individual customer are mostly ok. We all have a load of friends who've had their accounts mucked up, to be sure, but accidents happen. If every person there got things right ~99% of the time, that's a very good strike rate, but over time they'd clock up a huge number of failures just because the numbers are so big.

Suppose someone goofs up occasionally. It doesn't mean they did it out of malice, or because they didn't care about getting it right. It's just one of those things that we get when dealing with a bunch of humans.

Of course, no-one's asking us to believe that Jagex is a bunch of self-financing saints who work all day and night out of love for the players of the game, paying their rent by offering free RS items to their landlords, etc. That's not something one could seriously expect to find in the commercial software industry!

Personally I don't really mind that they changed the shops to the way they are now, in fact I thought it was a massive improvement for the game. I don't mean to speak for the majority of the community but I honestly can't see how a large amount of people would be annoyed at jagex for changing the way shops work, the only way I even found out that it had any sort of bad effect was by reading this article.

So in conclusion maybe it only has a bad effect for 0.1% (if that) of the community while for the rest of us, it's an improvement. Just something to wonder.

Oh and for all the people who say jagex only care about making money, answer us why they have made hardly any effort at all to make it mainstream and compete with other big titles in the market such as WoW, everquest etc. They have such a large amount of fans and players and still decide not only to keep runescape available for people with some of the worst comps out there, but to KEEP IT FREE, and they also cater to the most hardcore of runescape players as well.

Back after 3 years.
