Romy
I don't even think computers and ccalculators belong in schools, so yeah. Texting is only useful when trying to have sex with someone in a different class at the time, not learning. Your statement doesn't make much sense..."Trying to get to have sex with". The sentence makes more sense when I curse, but that's not allowed here so sometimes my translating fails. Oh, got what you were trying to say... Death
My school has a state test that we're required to pass to graduate. It was said many times over that we were not to take out cell phones for any reason. A girl was caught texting during the test and apparently she was discussing the test, so now the entire room she was in has to retake it. A guy in my class was caught too, but he was apparently just texting a girl so I hear we're okay. A bit of an extreme case, but it shows what happens when the teachers are so lax on the school's policy for taking away cell phones. Of my teachers none of them have actually taken a phone, they just give constant warnings. Link to Forum Games signature.[hide=TIFer Quotes]This lack of discussion value..disturbs me.English is the only language on this forum. If you use another language, you need to include a traductionbgok5jn dsgtalgOh wow, I hate everything -.-Death kinda scares me.your obsession with phallic objects shows quite clearly in your artworks.Ffs, someone put this in their sig.[/hide]

champion
My school just says that if you have a phone out during class the teacher can take it. I've had my phone out a couple times and the teacher just asked me to put it away and I did. My school doesn't care if kids use phones or iPods between periods. Some teachers let kids use iPods during class.
Amaranth_GTO
Oh god I text during school a lot. Really doesn't affect my learning, because I can still get what's going on in the class. Just makes the time pass faster. My school's teachers are supposed to confiscate all phones/mp3 players, but it never happens in some classes. Those are the classes where people run the cords of their headphones through their sweatshirt and listen to music/watch movies during class. Like one time, this kid was watching superbad and just busted out laughing while a teacher was on a tangent about the holocaust.
unorclan
What is the main goal behind the cell phone bans in schools? 1) Reduce/Stop cheating and 2) Help people pay attention and not have distractions.Because of this, many schools don't ban Ipods/MP3 players in the school because they don't help cheating and don't distract anybody (yes, they make you put them up once you get to class. But in the hallways and lunchroom, ect you can use them). At my old highschool, the administration was quite sensible in their rules. They didn't ban music players, laptops, video games, ect except in classes and cell phones were allowed at school, just they had to be in your locker. All this makes perfect sense. See, schools need to realize that we are an advancing society that depends on technology and to many schools now a days look at technology and punish you for having it. This is ridiculous. Times are changing and one day paper and pencil will be in the museums and our kids/grandkids won't be able to image not being able to type up notes on a laptop or record a lecture on their music player.Fortunately, I was lucky to go to a school that allows any student to bring in a laptop of their own and type up notes on it during class and watch a music video during lunch. Of course, they wouldn't allow the music video during class, but this is all common sense. See, my school was able to adjust properly to the popularity of technology and yet still enforce strict rules to reduce cheating and distractions. unkn0wnwarrior
Because of this, many schools don't ban Ipods/MP3 players in the school because they don't help cheating and don't distract anybody. Actually, at least some MP3 players can record and play back audio, which could help in cheating. And the distraction issue depends on how loud the person likes their music. Giordano
I love texting in class, at least back in highschool it was more secretive, but like really, does it bug you that much?I mean come on, how big of a dweeb do you have to be to get annoyed at someone else texting? Usually I do it to make plans, kill time, depends on who it is really... But yeah, my school had a policy, but everyone did it, no big deal.It bugs me when they do it excessivily. If you're waiting for the bus or your friends, fine whatever. But kids at my school text throughout the entire class period and mostly through lunch, so that 6 one-hour classes plus a half an hour lunch of texting. Don't you think that's overboard? Not to mention how much they text outside of school. And my friend has a huge complaint that hasn't happened to me but I agree with it, people texting while they're talking to you. I'm not directing this at you Chuz, but just in general. It's a sign of disrespect, really. "The cry of the poor is not always just, but if you never hear it you'll never know what justice is." depresins
[i don't see the issue if they don't disrupt other people (in high school). If the kid doesn't want to do work in class, I don't care, just don't bother anybody else who DOES. My favourite teacher in year 7 stressed this point and I still agree with him to this day. If a kid wants to sit in a corner and play PSP or talk on his mobile during break times, let him, as long as his family accepts the school is not responsible for it in any way. At my old high school, they were banned as were games systems, mp3 players, etc. Partially because they disrupted class and partially because they'd often get broken and parents would disagree who was responsible for replacing it. Back when I was at high school I had a medical and professional requirement to keep a mobile on me at all times which led to a number of conflicts with teachers. It was even brought about my first suspension! I also had to listen to the lectures from my university unit on an mp3 player during my free periods which caused even more problems. RpgGamer
Honestly, what's so important that you have to text during class? That's my question. Seriously, most peopel that text in school are texting people they're going to see later that day anyway, so i don't get why its so urgent they have to do it in class. SOme talk to people from other schools which makes a little more sense, byut even then...couldn't it just wait til you got online to IM each other, or after school to call each other? I don't understand why so many people text in school. Sometimes I know the situation is urgent and it is understandable, but 90% of these texts are random nonesense and pointless conversational fillers. Seriously...how many of you idiots have ever texted just the letter "k" ? God I hate that. Quote Quote Anyone who likes tacos is incapable of logic. Anyone who likes logic is incapable of tacos. Erk02
Even though I know it's impractical, I wish we could just live in a world where we could do anything in class as long as we don't distract others. For example, I could listen to my iPod if I felt that the teacher was just repeating himself. However, I couldn't be loud because then I'd be obstructing the other students' learning environment. Azvareth
Anybody else had this thing in their schools where people had these really high-frequency ring signals on their phones? And they'd turn them on on max volume during class, and the sound would be too high for the teacher to hear, but not for the students. Drove everybody crazy, especially the teacher who would either freak out because it was almost always impossible to pinpoint from which student the sound came from (especially since they didn't hear it), or they would think we were just messing with them and there was no sound. We didn't learn much that year.

She was so angry that nobody could reason with her and she threatened to give us all detention. Saru Inc
There's a zero tolerance electronics policy at my school. If an administrator sees you with your phone or iPod they'll take it, hand it over to the police, and you'll be fined $15 for it. Teachers are usually forgiving and will simply tell you to put it away unless you're a repeat offender. I can understand the reasoning of not having electronics during the class sessions but why can't I play my DS at lunch? Is it really harming anyone if someone listens to music while they eat? Because you may be hiding a cell phone underneath your ds texting answers to your friend Bob's history test. I texted all the time, never got caught. Nothing is so important that you need to text, but you only get caught if you're an idiot, and a lot of teachers don't mind it. They shouldn't be allowed. They are a huge distraction. You're in school to learn, not socialize. LOL. Not rly, schools don't teach, they show you how to follow orders, and thats it. Which is why creativity is so highly thought of in the public schools, because most of it died back in 1st grade. Try and give a public schooler an open ended assignment, maybe tell them to write a paper, about anything. Anything at all, no rules. Most won't be able to, give it a try. My phone can't send or receive texts, so I've never done it, but really, unless we're an hour into a video about the French Revolution and you have no idea what's going on even when you *are* paying attention, you shouldn't be texting in class. Reztral
There wasn't a huge problem with this while I was in high school, but it did become somewhat of a problem in college. While there aren't any rules banning them from classrooms (unless the professor stated otherwise) one could text or whatever during class. What really annoyed me, however, was how people didn't have the common courtesy to turn their phones to vibrate or something because at least 1 person got a call in the middle of class everyday. Of course it wasn't just a standard ringtone either, it had to be a crappy song or something. --8727th person to achieve 99 Fishing on 8/19/2008----6012th person to achieve 99 Thieving on 10/12/2008--R.I.P. fakeitormakeit2
In my school's handbook last year it said you weren't allowed to have you cellphone on you and that you were to keep it in your locker until the end of the day. Then our school had a fire and we all had to rush out of the school and like 3/4 of the school had to ask the other 1/4 of the school to borrow their phones to call their parents to pick them up. So now they removed the rule and they have no clue what the official rule should be. He who wears his morality but as his best garment were better naked... Skeptical
No, cell phones should not be allowed in the classroom: they're a distraction to the user, an annoyance to everyone around him or her, and are a tool that can quite easily be used to cheat. Jernlov
I went to private school and the policy was that only people who travelled via school bus could bring phones, and even then they had to be handed into the headteacher's office. Of course, people still brought their phones in anyway; but classes were too small for people to get away with using them then. If you were caught with anything else, it would be confiscated and you could claim it back at the end of the day. I think it is a good move because few things annoy me more than people using phones when they don't need to be. It's not just a distraction for them - it's a distraction for everyone else too. Maze
Texting kind of annoys me personally. I mean, if you just do it while you are sitting at the bus stop, fine. But it's when I'm working in a group and my partner asks, "What are we supposed to do? I was texting and I wasn't paying attention" That is when I get really annoyed. OR when I'm trying to talk to somebody and they are staring down at their phones texting pretending to listen. Then they look up and say, "What?" Then it just pisses me off. Teens are becoming addicted to their phones. They need to learn to live without it, seriously. I mean, if you need to call your mom/friend to get a ride home, fine. But it is when they do crap like what I just posted above just annoys me.
jjrox32
I really don't get why you all think it's that big of a deal. How are they distracting anyone but themselves? Unless you all go to school with people who hit the buttons on their phones so loud that it can be heard around the room, you shouldn't be that annoyed by it. If they want to distract themselves why do you care?
