The Evolution of Combat: BETA discussion

The tag system is incredibly crude imo, as is the xp per kill system. It'd be much better to divide xp and drops between the people who killed a monster according to how much damage they dealt (xp per hit as current). Kill stealing is a part of the game, nothing really to be worried about.

Single combat was made so that there are areas where you DON'T have to worry about kill stealing. Tag system could maybe use work, but we need a system in some areas of the game to prevent kill stealing.

Why would you want to have areas where you don't have to worry about kill stealing?

It's perfectly possible to not worry about kill stealing even in multicombat areas. Multi encourages people to bring their best, rather than afking with suboptimal gear and a bunyip. It's the best way to encourage people to be active in combat, better than abilities.

The best system to prevent kill stealing is glacor-style multi where you can use a familiar/barrage but still only attack one target at the time. I can see systems like that working in non-cannon areas like Kuradal's and the slayer dungeon. But it's better to have most of RS multi.

Can anyone who isn't 99 strength post a picture of your equipment screen without wearing/wielding anything?

I can tell you that I just drank a dose of brew, which lowered my strength level to 95, which also lowered my damage rating on the equipment screen to 95, if that confirms your hypothesis.

And also as my strength level increased at 1 lvl/min, so did my damage rating

I can't figure out if you're disagreeing with me or not. You ask why there should be areas where you don't have to worry about kill stealing and then talk positively about an area where you don't have to worry about kill stealing?

Glacors aren't really multicombat. They're coded to be multi-combat, but considering you only fight one Glacor at time, can't fight the Glacor someone else is fighting, it's single combat. The fact that titans work and you can end up fighting 4 NPCs (the Glacor and 3 glacytes) doesn't really count. The titan is an extension of the player and the Glacytes are an extension of the one Glacor you're fighting.

I gotta say tho, Glacor style "multi-combat" seems a lot simpler then this target system tho. "Someone else is fighting this monsters" is a lot more intuitive then not getting exp because the monster has an asterix.

I agree. I would much rather have areas where multi-combat works for our stuff, but where its not as easy to kill-steal. I'd rather have it based on who does the most damage and not who did the first hit. I'd want the places like kuradel's dungeon to be like glacors so that you can only attack one at once. (But still use steel titan)

Testing in PvP is not PvM. I want to be able to use abilities at half the rate, so that my fingers don't get tired.

@All the killing stealing stuff:

It's all well and good saying it's not a problem or it's not hard to not have you kills stolen when you already have the best gear and a loverly superfast internet connection that never lags on an awesome computer; if everybody fell into this category it'd never be an issue at all.

But we do not all fall in to this category and when you have a slightly older pc, poor internet or don't own the best gear (and any combination of the three) killing stealing does need something in place (eg the tagging system that whilst not perfect yet is a good idea to work around single-way combat) because otherwise we just get walked all over by people with the better gear, the better computers and the better internet coming in to yoink kills away and there's f all we can do about it.

You think tagging won't have those problems? There's only four each of iron/steel dragons in Kuradal's, you can easily tag two.

How do you tag two? I'm assuming you can only tag one monster at a time. If that's the case, I don't see how you are tagging two dragons. Unless you by being the first person to smack the dragon after it spawns, which doesn't make it much different from the current system.

I think a tagging type system (which, in spirit, is kind of how the current single-combat system works), can be good because it means a person with lowest stats and lesser gear can compete with a person with higher stats and gear for kills. Like the current system, I think it's best if we have some areas that are single combat, meaning the first person to smack it will get the exp and drops, but also include multi combat areas where the person who does the most damage gets the exp and drops.

You can just alternate attacks between the two dragons, effectively tagging both? With a 4-tick weapon you could tag up to 4 dragons theoretically without breaking the 10 second limit.

Karil appears to drain magic now. I was fighting through the Barrows and noticed he was dropping my magic one level at a time. I wonder if the set effect is any more significant when used by an actual player.

I've seen Torag activate his effect on me, but nothing appeared to happen. Maybe he drained my run, but I when I checked it was at 100% - so either it didn't drain it at all, or it was so very tiny it was restored by the time I realized what happened. I have yet to get the set effect to work with my own Torag's armor, but I've only tested it PvM. If it were still only a run energy drain, that might explain why it isn't activating on monsters.

Just a theory, but check your prayer points next time you go to barrows in beta :P.

Sounds good actually. Assuming you can only tag one monster at a time this allows a person to train on multiple animals if they concentrate, but can't hog them if other players show up. Hopefully players are testing this out and making good reports on the pros and cons of the new drop system. Also, if the tag system does not apply to bosses, maybe Jagex can expand that to other monsters on a case by case basis.

I was. The prayer drain is still there inside the crypts and tunnels, but greatly reduced. It drains only a few prayer points per spooky ghost face that appears. Not sure if any of the brothers' sets are having any further effect on it though. I'll keep an eye out.

Has anyone came up with a good rotation of abilities for each style?

I called it... I knew there would eventually be people who would start looking for efficient rotations. Not that it's a bad thing. I have a nice rotation, but things slightly vary for those who dps, tank or switch off with a 2h.

Players seeking a one-on-one PvP fights can use the Duel Arena or visit the new Crucible (Bounty Hunter) mini-game.

That's a nice way of removing any kind of dangerous single way PvP from f2p, brilliant move Jagex.

Crucible is P2P? Oh dear.

Fun little thing, if you're PvMing, and kill a boss, you can keep you adren bar up by alternating Freedom and the Jump back ability, you can add a few more in if you want to start the boss with a full bar.

Interestingly, any ability counts as entering cmbat, so you get the 10 second logout warning at ge.

Oh, and me and some radom guy got b2b Acp and Ahilt. Why does my luck exist in the beta?
