You also won't need to retire if all you need to do is sit in front of a computer :P
  2. Where on earth did you pull that from? What about advance fee scams? What about Ponzi schemes? What about pyramid schemes? What about matrix schemes?
  3. A switch will not replace your router - your router connects to the internet via the phone line. A switch will only work on one medium (ethernet in this case). Also, a switch doesn't route. A switch builds up a database of which machines are connected to which ports and only sends traffic locally on layer 2 of the OSI model. A router builds up a routing table of which direction packets need to be sent in and usually connects 2 networks, such as a home LAN to an ISP's network (edge router) or 2 other routers in an ISP's network (core router). Routers operate on layer 3 of the OSI model. Technically, what you have is a router with a 4-port switch attached. Do you need more than 4 machines connected to it?
  4. Have I misread it or does it not specify how many subnets you have to make? A class C network is one where you get the first 3 octets as the network number and the final octet as the subnet number. That means that you get 192.168.1 as the network number (for example) and 192.168.1.1-254 as the addresses you can use for the subnet machines. 0 and 255 are generally not used to address individual machines, they are normally broadcast addresses. Likewise, you shouldn't use any host addresses where they are all 1's or all 0's - because then it is the broadcast address for that subnet. This means that you need to split the last octet up into however many subnets - note that if there's 60 machines on each subnet you can't have more than 4 subnets when using a class C network address - that's because you've only got 254 addresses to work with. You need then to split the last octet into some subnets. The difficult part isn't laying it out, it's deciding how to specify the subnets numerically. I'm still thinking about it. Using 192.168.1.0/24 as your network number, you'd need to: Have these as your subnet numbers: 192.168.1.0/26 - in which you could use host numbers 192.168.1.1-62 192.168.1.64/26 - in which you could use host numbers 192.168.1.65-126 192.168.1.128/26 - in which you could use host numbers 192.168.1.129-190 192.168.1.192/26 - in which you could use host numbers 192.168.1.193-254 Subnet mask will be 255.255.255.192 for all machines. It's a while since I was taught this so it might be a bit...wrong.

So do all stocks offer dividends? Or just some? If they do offer dividends, can one still buy them low and sell them high?
  6. Anesthesia replied to kido14's topic in Off-Topic
That's why I said a large amount of money, as I know some people do live off dividends. What I don't understand is what happens with them, when they get paid, how much gets paid, if they increase in value - basically everything except 'they pay money out regularly'.
  7. Anesthesia replied to kido14's topic in Off-Topic
BlueLancer, would you care to explain about dividends? I understand the concept of buying low and selling high, and what might cause things to rise or fall in price, but I know very little about dividends. The idea I have is that they are payoffs you get from stock you have, so one could just buy loads of stock which gives dividends and then live off that? Provided one had a large amount of capital, that is.
  8. Thanks from me too. I very much like how things seem to get done now. In the past we'd bring up problems and they'd never get acted upon but now they not only get attention, but we get decent dialogue on them too.
  9. Wrong forum. Don't type your topic titles in all caps either. Also, .gif isn't a movie - it's a picture. It can be an animated picture, but it isn't a movie file.
  10. Some of the first I remember were: Dare Devil Denis for the BBC Micro: Overdrive for the BBC Micro: The tracks were all in a straight line!

A guy with dreads was sat in front of my in a lecture theatre within the last month. I saw a beetle crawling around in his hair.
  12. You mean what with believing in horoscopes and tarot cards and all that hat? I think it's called Ditzy Teenage Girlism. Have a look at this book: http://www.play.com/Books/Books/PROD/3- ... oduct.html Notice it says perfect MAN - not perfect woman or perfect partner. It is because such a ludicrous book is only marketed at women, I guess they think only women will believe it.

do you know what empathy is? You can turn that around though - do the people committing suicide have empathy for their families and friends who will be devastated?

A friend of mine started his off by putting very small amounts of liquid latex in his hair and forming the locks by hand. After that they grew into that shape.
  15. All religions are supernatural though.
  16. I don't think people lie about things like that. I think they are just mistaken.
  17. That sounds bad. When our staff went on strike it was just for one day...
  18. Bicentennial man. AI, too. Haha, I don't know what it is about robots wanting to be human.
  19. Considering we are hunter-gatherers, would we not have had weapons for hunting before then? Or do such weapons exist, but are obviously not for killing humans?
  20. To you I say: HAH! We have to do that every year. Teaching finishes around the 8th of December, exams start around the 20th of January. Year in, year out. The same happens for the May/June exams, teaching finishes in April.
  21. No, if you read my reply above you'll see that there are plenty of things we don't understand that aren't supernatural.
  22. Supernatural is that which cannot be tested. When fire and stars were supernatural the meaning different, at that time it meant 'that which we do not understand'. However, there are many things we don't understand now yet they are not considered supernatural - the mind, for example. They are, however, testable. Not investigated enough?! They have been investigated extensively, it is just that there are no results to publish because they aren't real. The fact that there is not much known about them is because there is nothing TO know.
  23. They're the reason I haven't seen it. Before, the product placements were believable. He drives an Aston Martin because it is a prestige car and he is a prestigious guy - it was not necessarily to sell more Aston Martins, it was to make his character more believable. However, the way product placement has got nowadays it is stupid. It really detracts from the integrity of the films because it is irrelevant most of the time. There is NO NEED to know what sort of laptop someone is using. There is no need to see them put their iPod on before a fight scene (damn you Blade Trinity, I want my bandwidth time back) and there is no need to take delivery of your crappy converse trainers when it has nothing to do with the story.
  24. Obsession isn't obsession until it is past that certain point. Before that point it is not an obsession. There is no healthy level of obsession. By definition, obsession is when it gets to an unhealthy stage. You are not obsessed with Europe. Intrigued, certainly. Fascinated, perhaps.
