September 16, 201114 yr Have you checked who the referred people are? I really do feel that when they reach the point of no return (eg in the above examples), they should no longer remain on this world. I really don't think life without parole is sufficient to bring them to justice really. I feel the death penalty should be brought back to the UK, reserved for the worst offenders with irrefutable evidence. The death penalty is ethically wrong, simply because it is a manifestation of revenge in its most barbaric form, and it is contrary to the (to my mind) irrefutable principle that revenge is petty and best avoided at all times. But hey, politics and morality aren't really connected anyway. Ethics change over time. Besides, who is the one to set ethics anyways? If we're going to go into meta-ethics, I am a firm moral realist, and as such I do not believe your first sentence at all. Second, I think it is the job of the state to have an ethical basis, much in the same way a political party has (allegedly) an ideology, because ultimately a closer link between philosophy and politics would be very beneficial for the latter and, in some senses, the former. Ethics don't have anything to do with being a realist. Ethics are learned. You are not born with them. How exactly would you have an ethical basis if people differentiate in the meaning of the word. If you do that, you're basically telling people they are wrong/incorrect in their beliefs. Pretty sure that would be a violation of the 1st Amendment. I believe moral realism, as a meta-ethical concept, is perfectly sound. As such, I do believe that man is born with a degree of ethical grounding. I cannot recall any society that has thought it acceptable to murder, and the only individuals that are are deemed by society as psychopathic. This is one example of telling people what to believe, and I see no reason not to do so more often (even if it violates the US constitution, which here in the UK holds no sway). But the reasons for killing people changed throughout history. If that's not ethics, I don't know what is. September 16, 201114 yr I've had the same iPod for five years. It's battery life is kinda sucking now. I rarely use it anymore because using my computer to play music is much easier (it only holds like, 400 songs, so it's a hassle syncing it), and I really don't need to walk around with headphones in my ears. I've had mine for almost four years and the battery life is still great. I rarely carry it around, though, but I often listen to music at night. September 17, 201114 yr Sometimes I feel like a dick for lashing out on people. I mean, it's never done out of the blue just for the sake of it. It's always some pretty bothersome situation that triggers me into getting mad and I would even go as far as to say that the anger is logically justified, but sometimes I cross the line with my confrontational tone. Sometimes I forget that people are people, bound to make mistakes every day of their sloppy lives. What irritates me is im the same, and I HATE being like it, yet I cant control lashing out (as many have noticed). Somehow I feel like holding in 10 years worth of hatred and anger hasn't really helped... Popoto.~<3

September 21, 201114 yr As I age I find my faith in God diminish more and more. I am slightly depressed at the prospect that God might not exist, and that life may in fact be meaningless... I have at times contemplated suicide... and yet I find I still have reason to live. I don't live for the prospect of personal enjoyment, I could care less about such trivial things. I don't live to help people - I may sound even colder for saying this, but I don't really seem to care much for other people. Not that I'm a total sociopath - I try to be as respectful as possible. The reason I live is for simple curiosity. I want to watch to world unfold around me. I want to at least try to understand the true nature of this universe before I die. There's just too much to see to give up now. Not that any of that knowledge will help me when I'm dead and yet... I just find it irresistible.

There's just too much to see to give up now. Not that any of that knowledge will help me when I'm dead and yet... I just find it irresistible.Have you looked further into church teaching (Catholic) on God? Because that stuff is actually extremely interesting (and can reinforce your faith, if anything). Secondly, everyone lives to enjoy themselves. If your living for curiosity, your living because you want to satiate this curiosity, which will be to your enjoyment. As for understanding the nature of the universe, that's a high goal. As a Catholic, I believe that the universe can never be fully understood because God cannot be completely understood. Also, I guess I suggest an examination of conscience. Do you really not care about people? Are there some in your life who are very close in your heart? If so (and if you actually want to keep your faith in God), look for God inside them; meaning, look out how good they are. Find God in them. When you understand God is the good in everyone, he becomes more apparent in everyday life. If there are none, go find some people who emanate goodness. For some reason, it's hard for me to believe that you live simply out of curiosity and that you don't care for people. You said you are curious to see what will happen as the world unfolds around you. This means you're curious about how your relationships with people evolve, which to me indicates that you care about how they turn out (thus, you care about what happens between you and people => you care about said people). Heck, if you didn't care about how the world turned out, you may have taken the awful road to suicide. The above was basically some ramblings. In short, look for the good in others and care for them because of it. If you surround yourself with good people, you'll have more of a reason to live (and you'll have more of a reason to believe in God if you recognize that God is love as corny as that sounds). | My Tumblr |
