The thing is that Latin is a dead language. It doesn't change anymore, it's not spoken anymore. And by the way, the Roman literati cursed over the downfall of their language as much as you do over English. There's a huge difference between written Latin and the spoken "kitchen Latin". Between linguists, there's the ever ongoing argument about language erosion versus language evolution. Every language undergoes a typical process of simplification over time. Exceptions eradicate themselves over time, because the users of the language tend to make things easier for themselves. Languages erode to put it negatively, they evolve in a positive sense.

Whoa, exaggerate much? 6 million Flemish Belgians + 16 million Dutch = 22 million The whole world: take another million, two million at the very most (Suriname, very small parts of France, Canada, USA). Afrikaans is not Dutch, it's a language by itself. Equals 23 to 24 million speakers worldwide.

Okay. Make sure you're all alone for an hour or so. Put yourself in front of a mirror. Put on some music you really like and that you're likely to hear at the party. Just try to move a bit. See how you're doing. Don't be ashamed, just try stuff out. Go a bit crazy and try to get your groove. If necessary, have a bottle of some alcoholic beverage near to break through your anxiety. Rinse and repeat. Do this from time to time and watch others when they're dancing. Don't be afraid to try things out, there's no one to see you or mock you. You'll only learn to move well by doing it a lot, enjoying it and knowing your body well. Apart from that, I'm sorry to say this, but it wasn't nice of your girlfriend to mock you. We all have our own groove, silly as it may look and your partner is the one who is supposed to like you for your sillyness. Why don't you ask her to help you out a bit? It's sooo nice to learn to dance with the person you're in love with, if there's trust between you.

The sheer randomness of the OT forum never ceases to amaze me :-). My mother used to be obsessed with coupons, buying nearly out of date food etc. Well, still is, but I don't live with her anymore, so it doesn't bother me anymore. It's what Bubsa said: she bought stuff she'd never buy otherwise, just because of the coupon. I myself leaf through the booklets from time to time, but before using a coupon, I always ask myself: "Do I really really need this?"

My hair is just like me. Fickle. Brownish in the winter. Blondish in the summer. Curly when it feels like it or when it thinks that one of my ex-boyfriends is around. Sleek when I don't feel like it.

Master Slayer Guide by Axe Man Jack (AOW) Updated 9/06
Sumpta replied to bigmoneyak's topic in General Guides
I hit 85 slayer yesterday and your guide was very very useful. It has become my favourite skill... and I won't stop slaying in a while. -
Last April: Countries like Spain, Italy, Greece were flooded for a month. Countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands, known for their rainy springs, had a heat wave that lasted 37 days during which they didn't get one drop of rain, shattering all records. It's not the only freak weather we've had, it's just one of the many instances. The last few years, the seasons here have turned upside down. At the end of every month, the weather forecaster tells us either that we have broken a record, or nearly broke the record of 1890-something. Everyday people like myself are noticing the changes - it's undeniable. I don't see why everybody is so resistant to changing the way we live. People in the western world need more than one earth to sustain their mode of living. We are polluting the world, regardless if the climate change is a scientific fact or not. How could anybody not want to contribute to a cleaner earth, a future for our descendants, just to sustain their selfish way of life? How is it possible that people keep arguing over the correctness of the theory, when in practice it's just plain and obvious that we need to change things?

Being wasted is fun, it's the hangover that sucks. Well, that, and the shame :-) I watched an interview with a -by now 80 year old- Belgian comedian yesterday and he said something that really struck me. "You haven't really lived if you haven't been very drunk with your best friend or partner just once, rolling over the floor with laughter." The intimacy of the scene he painted really struck me. Anyway, I'm not much of a fan of alcohol. I really do like the taste of wine and beer, but I'm too much of a control freak to get myself completely wasted. I don't believe in an age limit of 21, personally, because it denies people a gradual and sensible education in alcohol (ab)use. It's like never having a girl/boyfriend or being abstinent until you're 30. You miss out on your sexual education. Teenagers go crazy sometimes. I think they have to, in order to learn about everything and set their own limits. Adults should trust the judgment of youngsters more, and assist them in making the right choices, not prohibit everything. That's what the teen years are for, to experiment, but still have the guidance of your parents to help you sort things out.

If you don't wake up before you land, there is a chance that you will not wake up at all. I personally like it when I have such dreams and wake up on my floor  That doesn't sound very true to me...Its a dream... its not gonna kill you. :notalk: Yes, it is a dream, but your body believes it is real, and therefore it could feel the pain which too much of does kill people. "Falling asleep" did not get its name randomly. Going into sleep is really the feeling of falling off a building. Usually, we don't remember this because we go into deep sleep. Sometimes, however, the sensation of falling does the opposite and we go awake with a jerk. Like someone said, it happens often when there's another person in your bed/vicinity (who is usually not there) - we are more alert because of a certain sense of intrusion.

Well, actually, I'd go for number 4. I'm from Belgium, English is my third language after Dutch and French. I have a knack for the Germanic languages, which include English, so after a few very easy years of English language study at high school, I went on to study Dutch and English at university. And boy oh boy, was I in for a suprise. It's true, the basics of the English language are easy to grasp. The main difficulty would be the spelling, which is so very different from the pronunciation. But when you start to dig in deeper into the grammar, things get quite complicated. Especially the English verbs. I've only encountered one verb system that was more complicated and that's the Ancient Greek one. Although the French verbs get a vote in the top 5 as well :-) Anyway, everybody here who is claiming that English is oh so easy, is very welcome to one of my course books in English Linguistics for some brain torture. It's easy to grasp the basics, because it is the Lingua Franca of our time. Most of us are exposed to the language in our early years, which makes it easier to learn.

A small village called Bonheiden, with a huge hospital. I would dearly love to hear all you English-speaking folk try to pronounce Bonheiden :D

Why doesn't anyone ever play with private chat on?
Sumpta replied to Today's topic in General Discussion
My PM is always off, except when I am trading. And that is rarely. I get spammed and annoyed with the "hey, long time, what's up" conversations with people I added lightyears ago. I usually multitask while playing RS (watching TV, reading a book, surfing the net) - chatting draws too much of my attention to the game. Public chat is usually on, though. I don't mind people begging or talking nonsense as much in public as in private chat. Somehow, it feels like it's easier to ignore. -
Hmm. I only like the teleports. And even then, there are only a few useful ones: Monastery, Fishing Guild and maybe Crafting Guild (though I might stick to balloons for that). All the other teleports are within reach of the usual teleports anyway.

Hey, I've been wondering about this myself, thanks for figuring out the formula for me. I lost the mega amount of 27.088,56 HP xp (and I'm 112 combat). Yeah, I'm quite the PC warrior 8-) I prefer slayer for combat training. -
Tut tut, you're done pining over holiday loves! On topic: haven't got any useful holiday advice, but you're welcome to hand some out when you're back. I'm thinking of visiting Sweden later this summer :D One tip though: learn some Swedish. It's an adorable language.

Pass blocking - Part 2 of Jagex's update for fools
Sumpta replied to blacksimon's topic in General Discussion
So. Hypothetical situation: Player A uses his girlfriend's name as password. Player A engages in a conversation with Player B (a friend). Player A says: Gotta go, is at the door. Player A sees the ******** come up. Player B dies in a laughing fit. Is my imagination running away with me or is this a distinct possibility? Edit: oh okay, just read on the RS website that they block out the whole sentence... -
Poor Gorbachev. Forgotten and trod upon, while he was the first to look beyond the borders and beyond communism. He evened the path for Yeltsin, though neither of them would have liked to hear that :D.

Well first of all, you are not going to find the truth in a forum discussion. Speaking for myself, these long threads tire me out. People talk across purposes, the same argument is held over and over again, useless or non-relevant facts or not so facty facts are thrown around, links to dodgy sites, claiming to state the one and only truth, good arguments are ignored and the irrelevant torn apart,... I think we all crave for knowledge and truth, but in certain areas of life, we cannot but accept we will never know it all. We are in essence fallible. Obsessing about it seems a waste of energy to me. We cannot but embrace our imperfections :D. [/end sermon] Anyway, I'd advise to dig up some serious literature on the subject, rather than bump the topics.

Alching/Dropping Rares: acceptable practice?
Sumpta replied to vitaoma's topic in General Discussion
Just getting rid of the odd rare wouldn't have an influence. But what if a bored, maxed out, ÃÆÃâÃâüberwealthy player decides to try and hoard as many rares as possible, to destroy them and keep just the one of each? Can you imagine the outcry in the community? That guy/girl would be my personal hero, though. And usually, I'm not one for idolatry. -
I love love love my pirate's hook. It was fun getting it and it's fun walking around with it. If I ever lose it, it will be a dark RS day for me.

Yeah, I just read it in the newspaper. My bad. What really shocked me, this guy was known for being very unstable. He was on anti-depressants, had undergone psychiatric assistance. Teachers had signalled that he wrote scary stuff, other students reported him for stalking,... The guy was a walking timebomb. How can anyone defend making it so easy to have people like him, with known records, to buy weapons? How can anyone defend this system of buy-a-gun-in-your-local-Walmart? It's insane... And someone hasn't read the US Constitution before... Nice of you to call the core principals of arguably the most effective Constitution in the history of the Earth something to vomit over. The most effective constitution in the history of earth??? Oh please, drop the American ÃÆÃâÃâüber-attitude and look around you.
