The TruthScape Soapbox - Issue #6 - Good Riddance to Bad Rubbish

Published: December 11, 2007

In my prior Soapbox article I expressed my concerns due to what I felt were excessively harsh actions that Jagex had taken to clean up the game, which could result in throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. While I do believe that Jagex still has much work to do in ̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬Ãâ¦Ã¢â¬Åsaving the baby̢̢̮ââ¬Å¡Ã¬ÃâÃ

Bravo!

As always you make excellent points and for once I totally agree with you.

All these updates are pebbles in the ocean in long term playing of rs for the majority of players, in fact many were things long term players have asked for or desired for a long time.

The fact people moan about them highlights the guide depedancy many rsers have built up, and as such think any update that upsets the balance of the way the guides told them to do things is doomsday.

Well, this update obviously has almost uncountable positive effects.

What I am concerned about is how it will inconvenience me, which is of course important to me, and because a game shouldn't be a hassle to play.

Firstly, sharing drops, won't be possible, although I think they can come up with a fix...

But what I'm also concerned with is the fact that 3k is pretty much insulting. I actually can't remember the last time I spent under 10k, and I often pay much more than that if I need something worthless really quick, not to mention that I almost always buy high and sell low when buying and selling items in general.

Does it out number the positives? No.

But I think with the way it is at the moment, there may be just a few too many negatives.

Agree 100%, if they keep complaining to Jagex the way they are, spamming, calling them idiots/'noobs', [wagon]'s (as in the picture), then Jagex will ignore these people and won't change anything, not that they have any intention to do so.

People are saying that we will quit if they don't change...who cares, Jagex have all ready taken all their money over the years, its the players loss not theirs, who have wasted their time and money.

Have you ever been in a clan?

What does that have to do with this discussion?

You provided so many good ways to look at the updates. Now I understand what Jagex was trying to do :) . Looks like they don't intend to let the game just die eh? I agee with you 100%. Good riddance to the bots, RWT'ers, Gamblers, Lurers and all the sort. We won't miss you.

The fix to the boss monster hunting will come soon. Jagex has amazed us before and can again. Perhaps they'll update the LootShare system in conjunction with the Grand Exchange?

I agree with everything 100% except your last two - about pures. They made perfect sense - creating a character that emphasized combat, for, well, combat purposes. Emphasizing that a pure has different stats/equal level than/with one with a highest combat stat of 45 is comparing skill pures to combat pures - no one pk's with a skill pure, and no one skills with a combat pure. Your point is like saying its not fair to train for basketball when you're tall, because golf players are shorter than you are.

drop trading - its done with more than just pures. in fact...

purchase of power training supplies - pures do not purchase botted goods, they only require food (no one trains with sharks) and pots (which are also not botted). Skill pures, however, use most botted goods.

fighting over resources - the only one you mention is easily killed monsters. In fact, i think thats the only one you can mention. Regular characters/skill pures take oh so much more.

Abusive/childish behavior - So why is this associated with pures? Why lurers at DK's, or half-killers in karamja dungeon? Why not at trees? Why not when fishing? Etc...

I understand your dislike of pking, however it is unfair to associate all the negatives to them while the source is not limited to the wilderness

I must make clear I do not think these updates are flawless,.

But I'm sure jagex, given a month or so, can throw together a way to legitimately give presents and have loot drops sold by many ppl.

Perhaps an expansion to the ge in whihc you can "group" sell an item with the gp being split equally between sellers or a palce where u can send gifts, but I'd imagine gift value would be determined by total level or something so that opnly high lvl players CAN give millions in value and limit you to say 1 present a week maybe?. That would still keep lvl 3 bots from giving mass "presents" or high value ones, but still allow us what we want.

Who came up with this honor bs in the wild anyway? if you go into wild and you die. you deserved it end of story. cant take it? stay out of the wild. it was fun taking stupid ppls money who didnt know what pking was and it was the only reason i enjoyed playing it. playing to get high lvls just isnt fun. its senseless its much better to get with a group of friends and pk together having fun. just because u dont like pking that nobody likes pking.

Sorry but how can I look at this when the poster himself has biased views already?

You claim any honourable pk methods are dead. May be true if F2P pking didn't exist, but it does. F2P held very honourable pkers, far more than in p2p.

As well, everything in here is based on the fact that pures are a negative influence in runescape. Even if it is true, that is all this review is based on. Take out the negative pures, and this review has no value.

Jagex can and will fix the problems with Lootshare and monster hunting. I feel quite confident of that, and suggested a few options in my earlier article (linked at the top of this one.)

It's an editorial. It's based on opinion. Viewpoints. etc.

As well, everything in here is based on the fact that pures are a negative influence in runescape.

They are. They're proving it. Again.

Even if it is true, that is all this review is based on. Take out the negative pures, and this review has no value.

Again, it's an editorial, not a review. And if you only think it was based on pures, you clearly didn't even read it.

I am sad to see you forgot to mention players who give each other resources which is now out of the question. Lots of players helped one another out, or even more popular is giving away your stuff when you quit. But you cant do that anymore. What is going to heppen to all of the resources and phats ect. when people quit. They will not longer be able to give them away to their friends. They have to use the party hall and risk people they dont even know getting them, or use a house chest to give items away (but i think they will change this as well since you could use it to sell your gold to one person). This is the area that upset me the most in the updates. I didnt agree with all the updates but they didnt upset me because they didnt really effect me. This one, however, has real implications on my game play and the majority of the RS players.

While you are entitled to your opinion, and while I'm certainly not saying your not, I am entitled to mine. Improving the game is completely dependent on what you do. The removal of the game does not just effect runecrafters, dragon killers, and clue scrollers. It effects Cookers (who buys most of the sharks, and lobsters [f2p] to use? PKers), woodcutters (who spends all that time alching for 82/85/94/99 mage? PKers, Pures, and people who want certain levels. But this does effect PKers), Fletchers (see woodcutters), fishing (see cookers), Smithing (f2p wars can go over 6 hours of combat, people loosing over 50 runes sets in the time, where does that rune come from? the smithers), Mining (see smithers), Herblorist (Prayer potions, super sets, brews? yeah, expect these to drop), Slayers (people loosing whips and dark bows to pking created a constant demand along with the players getting their firsts. This will make these weapons drop further), Farmers (see herblorist), and finally rune crafters (yes, pures and pkers bought plenty of runes to get 99 magic so they could teleblock YOU)

I completely agree, that pker communities are not the greatest. But completely demolishing them? That is uncalled for. What you dont realise is with these updates, pkers lost one of the only things that gave you a complete advantage in fights, Teleblock.

They just completely KILLED Mage bank, Varrock drags, Middle drags, and East drags. I have pk'ed all of these locations for over a year, and I can tell you that the only way someone will get a kill now, is to special their target and get lucky. And FYI to this general community, out of my 10 whip kills and 30+ ahrims kills, i have yet to down someone doing a clue, or killing green dragons (not skulled, if they skull that makes them fair game)

Now on the forced wilderness use, there are very few things that require wilderness use, one being a quest, some being clues, and using the abbys. This forced entrance should not have all reward and no risk. Clues require you to solve puzzles in dangerous areas, now, the wilderness is not nearly as dangerous. Runecrafting via the abbys is some fast experience with amazing money? People wanted it out of the wilderness, but they needed some sort of risk, now it is gone.

Obviously, I realize there is good hidden in this update. But killing player killing is not the answer. Jagex has disabled nearly every PvP and replaced it with an awkward new style, with only a small percentage of the benefits.

Player killing was never dead, it just took some effort on peoples parts to try and find fair fights, just like finding an empty DK lair, or KQ world.

 Yes I'm Pro-PKing, and I would renounce being NH in a heartbeat to get PK'ing back. It's just like if they removed DK's, or Barrows, people would have mixed opinions, and I obviously have a different one than Queltar. Hope you can get past it and notice that its not a good thing that PK'ing is gone, and was never dead.

Yes, their intentions were great, I completely agree. And yes, they got rid of a whole lot of stuff.

But if they take their obsession for the letters/numbers 3 and K to trading and dropping, then they arent going to get the 5 and $ from me.

I am completely sure that some people will continiue to play this game with loads of joy. But when Jagex took away the freedom, it got me thinking about how much of a grind this game is.

The update opened my eyes, that yes, Ive grown out of Runescape. Its time to move on. For both Jagex and players alike.

Very good editorial. I liked it much better than the last one (though that is mostly because this one shares my views). The last one was still very good, since it actually pointed out the problem in a way that didn't seem like the new trend (Runescape is dead/broken, or I'm going to quit Runescape) and gave solutions. This one showed many good points to the updates that I didn't even realise, and I seemed like the most aggressive person fighting for the update (though my aggressive posts were mainly on 2 invisionfree forums). Again, very good.

Currently will be using my Oni Tsurugi account to attempt to get 99 on all free skills without spending any gp, just for the sake of doing so.
