Just happened upon this article in my travels around teh interwebs. Although there really isn't any of this thats new to those of us that are in the MMO community, it's nice to see the issue getting some wider coverage.

Now, slightly off topic, WTH is that guy doing in FULL torag at Banos??? I can see using top/bottom for soloing, but why full with hammers??? #-o

Also, nice to see the RS pic at the top of the article, above the WOW one. =D> \'

Wow that's guy's crazy lol, full torags and no protect pray on. :wall:

Anyways, on topic: I never knew there were that many people involved in Gold Farming! I know not all of them are on Runescape but seeing how large RS must be, there may have been up to 100,000 people involved with gold farming on RS or maybe even more!

Great article and good find lol. ::'

EDIT: I post this 11 minutes later and it's the first post. :|

Thanks to Quarra for the awesome sig!

Nice find, and I agree with the last quote:

"You could get rid of it, but you would get rid of one of the most fundamental parts of player-to-player interaction."

Where people can interact in this way, RWTing is inevitable.

Considering that's all he is wearing hes not going to lose anything with pro item, anyway its a jagex image asset aand was probably done by a mod.

Thanks Gradeskip93 for my awesome sig!

My dad just read this, ran upstairs and asked me how much I could sell my lot for..

Its good to see its getting media attention, at the very least.

The pic is JAGeX provided. You can see that he has no cape/gloves/boots/brains either.

Winged Fish on a RWT complaint-

There's four complaints on the whole site, one from a mother who was convinced by her son that the RWTers she was buying him items from were from Jagex (and then got scammed and is taking it out on Jagex), two people complaining about having their accounts taken away, and one ranting on the trade restrictions and wilderness removal.

Now just change the background color and page layout, and you have the RSoF

Games makers had tried to limit the amount of trade in game gold and gear, few had reported significant success, said Mr Davis.

"You could get rid of it," he said, "but you would get rid of one of the most fundamental parts of player-to-player interaction."

Wow, Andrew Gower's ears must be burning.

I saw something like this in a paper a while ago, but its always good for there to some attention put on it i guess, appears to be a growing problem outside of RS aswell, maybe we'll see some other MMO games follow jagexs suite soon?

Some of the figures seem pretty crazy but i guess were theres demand theres supply, gotta feel bad for some kid in china making a next to nothing though when he has to play all day,

Theres a fine line between not listening and not caring,

I like to think I walk this line every day.

Pinning blame on Jagex is like trying to put pants on an old man.

You both know he needs them, but he'll just keep dancing around, avoiding them at all costs.

Wow media attention I'm suprised. But well we've heard it all but 400,000? wtf alot of no lifing gold farmers.

400k/6B people in this world producing FAKE/VIRTUAL GOLD to sell for real money, this is obviously a HUGE business and should not be taken as a joke. And these people earning money at 150 some bucks a month? That's terrible! I juse appreciated the December 10th 2007 updates a bit more.

Off topic: I agree it put a rather large smile on my face to see a pic of Runescape before WoW, maybe that's because Runescape has actually cracked down and reduced drastically on RWT than WoW.

400,000 people and a 500 million dollar market is a lot more than I expected really. I thought it would involove a lot less people because I asumed most of the gold farmming was done by macros.

As for the wierd picture, it's from a collection of pictures that are avaible to the media. Found here. Its either a Jagex moderator or it was generated and never actually happened.

Off topic: The bounty hunter guide used to show a guy in full bandos with a dragon longsword killing someone in full dragon.

Does it really matter whether I was right? #-o
This is Tipit. There is nothing more important than being right.

Common sense is nothing more than a deposit of prejudices laid down in the mind before you reach eighteen.

Ahh... EVE apparently lacks those problems. And I've been debating getting it or WoW... hmm :-k

OH S***! He/she/it is back!

Tabula Rasa lacks gold farmers 100%.

The end quote is a good one for RuneScape, but you've got to remember the Grand Exchange. It gives people a way to buy and sell on a margin. It doesn't completely deaden the blow, but it helps. What they're talking about the article is what would have happened if there was no GE and trading happened on the streets in a 30k margin...well, junk is already worth its value in gold, but it could be a lot worse.

I once saw a bunch oh them in Good will.

But seriously $150 per/month?

My favorite quote from the article:

Gold-farming was proving so lucrative that criminal gangs were cashing in on it, said Mr Davis. These pay for their accounts with stolen credit cards, take money from players and do not hand over gold or goods in return and fill chat channels with adverts for websites hawking game gold.

This ought to (at least somewhat) prove to those who flame(d) the December updates that Jagex actually implemented them for the reasons they gave, and not because they hate pures.......Yes I'm looking at you Eatrunearrow

I don't know if this is true, but dosen't game producers have some players test the new features/game before they release it?

In other words: that "Torag" could be a player testing Bandos for bugs or something that can lead to advantage to players..

+ It also could be a Player that has his stats boosted up to Attack, Strength, Defence and HP level to 1000.. (Just random number)

i went to a site to try to sell my account when i read this (only to see how much it would worth for them)

Btw the account is worth about 60-120$. ;)

Those gold selling sites just rip people off and re-sell the account. (buy for 43$, sell for 430$)

My goals:
5M coins: 4350K+ coins 200k+ items - 2 dec
5M coins - 16 dec
I have gotten my 5M by christmas.

-bah this is only here for historical purposes now, I got 20m+ already

"fail, well atleast the title,i wont read it with that colours"

"If you hadn't posted in rainbow I would actually give this a proper read"

"Colours suck."

*I remove colours*

"Where did all the colors go!? This is now 40% more likely to be tl;dr'd due to the lack of colors."

My dad just read this, ran upstairs and asked me how much I could sell my lot for..

hahahaha, i'd be like "dad [bleep] off, i ain't selling anything!"

nice find 'n read =] also added to wikipedia "gold-farming" page

I'd be like "around £30 but i need to use your paypal".
