What diseases run in your family?

Featured Replies

I remember my grandfather used to have a stone-thing growing in his liver. It nearly killed him, until his friend, who apparently was a doctor, managed to remove it. That was 30 years ago btw.

Now, he is living in Taipei, having a normal life. :)

Other than that, I don't know.

Diabetes, some different forms of cancer, and although they're technically not diseases, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Diabetes is hereditery!!!

*invites friends around for a "White stuff" partaaaay! You gotta love that sugar*

I'll bet you do love the white stuff.

Heart disease sort of runs in my dad's side, but I don't know if that's for reasons of genetics or big Midwestern salt-and-cholesterol filled diets. Also baldness and color-blindedness, but those seem to "skiP' generations and my dad has both. So I'm clean there at least for now, I suppose.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe you can only get color-blindness from your mother if you are male.(it is on the X chromosome, and you by default get the Y from your father.) Funny thing is, male-patterned baldness works the same way.

I don't think so, I'm colour blind, so is my dad, brother and sister. Only my mum isn't..

However, women have two X chromosomes and can carry the gene for colorblindenss on one, and normal vision on the other. Normal vision is dominant, so she is only a carrier. (Hence why colorblind women are so rare.)

Males have and X and a Y chromosome, and since Y is too small to carry some genes, men only get one shot. Men cannot be carriers for colorblindness. They just are or aren't.

The only difference between Hitler and the man next door who comes home and beats his kids every day is circumstance. The intent is the same-- to harm others.

[hide=Tifers say the darndest things]

I told her there was a secret method to doing it - and there is - but my once nimble and agile fingers were unable to perform because I was under the influence.

I would laugh, not hate. I'm a male. :(

Since when was Ireland an island...? :wall:

I actually have a hobby of licking public toilet seats.

Mental illness - bipolar disorder, depression, etc, on my mum's side, maybe schizophrenic tendencies, I'm not sure about that last one. Both sides of the family seem quite obsessive-compulsive but not enough for it to be diagnosed as an issue. I'm in my mid-teens and I've been very mentally healthy for most of my life - my older brother is totally unaffected as far as I know - so I hope I'm unaffected as well.

Breast cancer, apparently. About a year ago my grandfather (who is dead now) got breast cancer. I didn't even know guys could get it.

Other than that, nothing.

Cool.

Skin cancer and sensitivity on my dad's side and rosacea on my mom's side, my skin's a riot :( .

Wait... what? O_O

I didn't know men could get breast cancer either...

It's like winning the lottery. Except not good. (How my friend described it.)

I suppose it's just way more rare since they do have breast tissue to some extent. Girls just have more of it so, more chance of cancer.

It's logical, but when you first think of it, it's like 'Wat? O_o'

I edit for the [Tip.It Times]. I rarely write in [My Blog]. I am an [Ex-Moderator].

The males in our family for the past 3 generations have always had problems with kidney stones.

Oh joy. :-| -.-

At least me and my dad have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. It's so rare that you probably haven't even heard of it.

I went "AAAHHHHH!!!" when I saw the diagrams. Freaks.

Well breast cancer (or at least the type he had) requires estrogen to grow and spread, so I suppose the fact that women have much more estrogen than men would make them more prone to that type of cancer. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong though, I don't know very much about it.

Cool.

Not too sure if there is anything really life-threatening, but my father's side is well known for migraines, seriously hate getting one of those.

Migraines, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, cholesterol. Oh joy.

I can move my knees about 15 cm (6 inches) more than normal people. :P

My mother has CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome) & fibromyalgia ;\. Other then that my brother had a disorder with his pancreas and some kidney issues. Not really a disease, but the doctors found out i had 2 appendixes when they were removing my 'original' one, so they took the other one out aswell -.-.

Some people dream of success, while others make it happen.

Apparently risk for Type 1 Diabetes (my cousin and I have it), risk for Type 2 (grandfather and great grandmother), and high blood pressure and cholesterol (both sets of grandparents).

Non-disease but hereditary: knee problems (both parents), extreme nearsightedness (dad, random relatives), crooked teeth (dad, random relatives), and feet problems (dad, maybe random relatives).

And for random traits, we all like to rant and get angry fairly easily. Running joke that we need anger management classes.

I'm probably going to pass on a stress-related TMJ/TMD (muscle/skeletal disorder with the jaw that basically causes lots of pain randomly).

ALSO: TYPE ONE DIABETES is not necessarily hereditary, although there's an obvious link... Scientists think a gene gets switched on or off and that helps cause it. Type 2 is hereditary + lifestyle choices.

Pseriosis. It comes from my mother's side and I have it... >.< so itchy!

Depression just runs rampant on my mother's side of the family.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

OPEN WIDE HERE COMES THE HELICOPTER.

Think my mom's side has obesity, but she was the smallest in her family

The sour dough of the epitmous pie hungers for another's sweet lips to be dulled into a state of most irreverant humbleness

TUBULAR BELLS!

heart conditions are a problem in my family.

hearing problems seem to be a common thing in my family, I myself seem to have tinnitus starting.

I keep meaning to go back to the doctors, but its hard getting an appointment around work.

Joint problems seem to be a common thing also.

I seem to be the only one with Scoliosis in the family (granted it is minor to the point of no treatment needed, it just hurts a lot of the time) but I don't think that would be something that could be passed on through children... hopefully not anyway lol.

Schizophrenia, autism, anaemia and various circulatory conditions are in my family's history. I have three out of four.
