We all know that it's a tough time finically for most companies. However, it struck me with the talk of this Anti Hijack system that Jagex must be getting bit. Admittedly, Jagex has said they won't be profiting from this, not directly at least. Andrew said that most people quit after being hacked, and when someone quits, thats 1 less membership they'll be getting (assuming they were members). With this Anti Hijack system, it would make hacking / password scamming almost impossible (unless the user was INCREDIBLY careless) which means less people quitting as a direct result of being hacked.

 

 

 

Also, Jagex have said they'll be introducing a name changing system. Personally, I think Jagex will charge for this to stop people changing there name all the time.

I very highly doubt Jagex is having anything remotely close to money problems.

The credit crunch refers to something different to the recession you are talking about.

 

 

 

And I really doubt they introduced a security measure because of the recession. There is absolutely no link. They are looking into it because of the increase in phishing and other easily accessable account stealing techniques, which they have been cracking down on behind the scenes over the past year.

I bet they're fine with money. They prolly have too much and don't know how to spend it all.

While ensuring that people don't get hacked (and subsequently ensuring they keep their income) is certainly a perk of systems like the antihijacking system, I don't think it was the key motivator. That's just my personal view.

 

 

 

To be sure though, their long-term profits are always in the back of their mind. It's just business.

When they increased the membership price, i remember that jagex said they were not in trouble from the recession. It doesnt seem to me like theyre running out of money, because i dont think that introducing new security measures really makes as much money as some other things they could do.

I remember Jagex saying they're doing well for finance. I don't see why they would be in trouble, either. Sure, you see people saying they're quitting all the time here on the forums due to one update, but the reality is that these are one-off drama queens that just want attention. Just like with swine flu, the problem gets dramatized and it seems much worse then it really is. Additionally, I'm betting most people claiming they're quitting never even consider quitting.

 

 

 

Could we stop with the dooms day theories of Jagex trying to profit from their customers now? EVEN if they are proffiting from this new anti-hack device, SO WHAT? They're a company for crying outloud, not a charity. Believe it or not, companies like to profit.

Most of the companies in trouble today are ones that depend on borrowing to finance their operations. Think of Jagex.. at most they'd be borrowing to pay for their servers and staff? I mean they only have 1 building to my knowledge and they don't really need to buy any raw materials to continue making money, they just need to keep thinking up ideas on how to improve the game and then used their already purchased computers to make it happen. It seems like a pretty lucrative business to be in, but then again, I have no idea how much it costs to have as many servers operational as we have..

I don't think it has to do with money, it is mainly just they are trying to keep the current player base. People move on from games that grow old, or if they take a major loss (e.g. their account) they will quit. This will prevent the main source of people quitting, which is getting hacked, scammed, ect.

I am assuming this security key will be able to pull system details, and prevent too many different computers from logging on before it goes into lockdown, this means it could be used to detect account sharing. You may have to load the security key onto all of the computers you play with, it is a simple USB stick so you would have no reason not to.

I just dont like the idea of selling upgrades in game, if this is succesful soon they'll sell high level armor equipment etc only available through real money such as this key + bankspace

It's not a USB stick. It doesn't connect to the computer in anyway. It's simply a small device with an screen which generates a number.

If someone decides that £3.50 is too much during these times, then that is when Jagex will suffer. Of all things which people may cut back on, Runescape, I feel would not be one of them. It's simply a very cheap form of entertainment.

I don't have a link, they announced it a while back and I seen on the Jagex Twitter page that they are still working on it. Wouldn't expect it any time soon though.

they are actually doing rather well. why spend $60 on a xbox game for one week when you can buy a month worth of play for $6

America's economy isn't affecting a worldwide MMORPG based out of England. I'm sick of the "in this economy" schtik from people now. It's all over advertising and television. Every time something turns down it's blame the economy.
