Shelter - Work to live, or live to work - you need some form of shelter for an adequate life. How big, and how much it costs to maintain comes down to where you live and how you live.

Love - What your partner does or doesn't do, how they live etc, is Irrelevant - it's about finding your own "soulmate" and who you wish and choose to spend your time with, and "with".

Health - Look after this, the longer your life expectancy can be (Generally). Your nutritional intake is not consistent with your lifestyle, and is only affected by income. (You don't have to be an athlete, to eat like one)

Purpose - Probably the most important aspect. How you derive purpose is an individual choice and ideology. Society can shape your circumstances into choosing your purpose, but never should it define it. Whether your purpose is to work a carreer toward something you feel passionately about or your purpose is to provide shelter and food for a loved one (or yourself) this is obviously a hugely variable factor - but ultimately should dictate the reason why you get out of bed in the morning.

Responsibility - If you are to have kids (You don't have to, or might not be able to), you have responsibilities - You must provide, sacrifice and raise your children. How you do this is completely individual, but I imagine for most people, they become the most important aspect of your life and generally shift your purpose in life.

Social The real grey area - again an individual aspect, if you go to work, school that involved interacting and seeing other people this is generally enough to maintain conversational and life skills. Should you wish to see friends or colleagues more, that is an individual prerogative and if you have other essential life criteria already filled - mightn't be the highest on your agenda.

(If you can think of other essential human needs feel free to add them)

I think we've established that you can have all of these things spending 10 hrs a day playing a game.

For those who only think we can live a generic hollywood-esque lifestyle to attain all the things we need or want as a human being, perhaps need to expand their minds more and see that there are in fact, multiple ways to "live".

xpx is starting to sound like one of the level 80s who flame all high levels for being fat nerds. And what does 'being successful in life' however you may see it have to do with this? Not everyone needs to, or wants to have a full time job at a specific point in their lives, nor is it the only criteria for being successful. And while you keep coming with your efficiency stories I will be happy to spend time further improving my physical condition, filling the gaps in my knowledge and having a non-obsessive mindset towards video game efficiency, so keep it up.

Just some simple maths:

Amount of hours in a day: 24

Amount of hours spent sleeping on average: 8

Amount of hours spent awake: 24-8=16

Assumed amount of hours played: 10 (somewhat accurate in my case)

Amount of hours left for other activities: 16-10=6

Additionally, being able to do other things during the hours spent playing if you don't go full concentration.

Sometimes the way someone WANTS to spend their life isn't healthy. Not working and spending those 8/9/10 hours you'd work playing a game is not healthy, period. Being healthy is eating healthy, going to the gym and/or doing Multiple sports, have a girl/boyfriend, have a lot of social contacts etc. Sad but true is 95% of the top players do not have anything mentioned of the above. Might still be good for them to do what they want, does not mean it's healthy.

I agreed with the first sentence, but stopped when you started to describe the stereotypic life as the standard.

Healthy in my opinion is a good mix of everything, and having a balanced life. When you play 10h a day, this mostly isn't the case, but there can be exceptions. But by all means, please don't tell everyone to go to the gym, frantically find a girlfriend, doing *multiple* sports, having *lots* of social contacts. Damn, you are giving everyone a lot of pressure... Sad but true is 95% of the world doesn't have this healthy life you described.

?

well, OVER 50% of the almost 7 billion people on Earth Do have a relationship, friends, do sports tbh..

Over 50% of people are in a relationship?

BRB KIDS GOING TO MEET MY OTHER FAMILY@@#!12

*hic*

(You realise if over 50% of the population of people are in a relationship, some people MUST have more than one partner.)

You are wrong charliebrown: Both my parents are counted in this percentage, yet it's one relationship.

3.5B people are in a relationship, 3.5B aren't. This means there are rougly 1.75B relationships, each consisting of 2 partners.

Teamed, I meant that 95% doesn't meet ALL the reqs you listed.

Also, claiming it's easy to earn 10000 euros a month in the Netherlands just makes you seem stupid, so please don't make any claims on stuff you don't know [cabbage] about.

I didn't claim it was easy, I claimed it was pretty easy when you finished university, afaik a cabbageload of the people here become a doctor, 7000 euros, easily. ~3000-3500 euros for a vet, and so on.. If you're going to do something with mathematics/art/medical stuff it's pretty easy to earn loaaaaaaads..

You said there were a cabageload of jobs that earn over 10 000 euros, which kind of implies it is easy to find one...

I have yet to even think of a job that earns 10 000 euros right when you get of the university. The only one I could think of was a specialised doctor, who has to study 13 years before he can make the big money, but you just said that's only 7000.

Art makes money? Only if you are the best of the best of the best. Most people who studied art are dirt poor and have trouble finding well paid projects.

Maths/engineering etc? Makes pretty good money, if you get into a good componey, but NO WAY that you get payed over 4000 euro's a month at your start, let alone over 10 000, that's completely ridiculous.

Anyway, what I just wanted to say is: stop posting false info about the Netherlands. There's already enough people coming here with false hopes created by other people.

The father of my best friend does something with taxes, just finished secondary school (6 years of VWO) then a couple years of universitary and earns 12,000 euros a month and so 144,000 euros a year.

Rather that then playing games.

You are about 22 years old when you finish university. Care to explain me how you can have a 15+ year old son by then?

Also, one example doesn't mean there are a cabbageload of jobs...

(and are you sure its 12000 euros netto, and not bruto?)

And he is 15, his dad is 50.

So he is 50 and he just finished university, weird. Unless you mean his dad did university 30 years ago, and now, after years of hard work, he has aqcuired himself a job that pays 12000 a month. (which is different from the "in the netherlands, you study university and there will be a cabbageload of jobs that pay over 10000 a month)

Also weird how he pays so few taxes. Normally your netto is just over half of what you make bruto.

EDIT: reread what you said, and you'll understand

not gonna comment on it further cause it's way too much offtopic

Aasi, I haven't once and will not go into any of the details of speculation on high level players, as, frankly, it's their own business and their own lives, thus i'm just sharing my opinion on the need(need is the good word to describe something you grind trough) to spend a huge chunk of your young(i assume most of the top players are between 20 and 30 years of age) lives trapped(a good example of afking) in front of a computer screen doing things that don't, in any way, help you have a healthy lifestyle, so while it's true that there are 14 more hours in the day, they need to be carefully catered to take care of everything else that you need in life, not to mention, most can't endure such a lifestyle while working or attending university. I don't see a no-lifer as being a fat guy in the basement, rather someone whose life is built around playing a computer game, and most of the decisions they make result from that, and i do understand that it's possible to endure a healthy lifestyle while keeping up such high hours in front of computers, but it's certainly not easy, and more often than not, the part that suffers the most is your social life- and i don't mean one behind a computer screen.

That said, I'm not a great fan of watching my avatar chop ivy whilst I sit there and do nothing but stare vacantly. When you play anything on the Xbox, your skills are constantly being utilised because you constantly have to input commands. With RuneScape sometimes you just click and watch, which is basically the same as sitting in a room and staring at a wall when you think about it.

Afkable methods are usually a choice, with usually other methods existing that are more interaction and also more Xp/hr.

I don't understand why some people here flame certain top players on the way they play the game. Whether it's efficient or relaxed it shouldn't concern you, just mind your own business :) I would rather play like Aasiwat, in a relaxed way so I don't burn out and end up like Zarfot. Although, if he quit for some other reason then my statement is irrelevant, it was just an example. The way Aasiwat plays seems pretty efficient if you ask me, keep in mind that he is ranked 1 in overall XP.

xpx is starting to sound like one of the level 80s who flame all high levels for being fat nerds.

Damn, you are giving everyone a lot of pressure... Sad but true is 95% of the world doesn't have this healthy life you described.

?

well, OVER 50% of the almost 7 billion people on Earth Do have a relationship, friends, do sports tbh..

You guys all seem to forget that most people spend most of their days WORKING. Many jobs these days are deskjobs, meaning they're sitting down all day for hours, just like any RuneScaper. When people aren't at their jobs, they usually have to spend time commuting to and from work, and then taking care of any kids they may have. They get similar amounts of free time as many RuneScapers who have no responsibilities and only play RS. So in terms of hours, I don't see any difference.

Let's examine the social aspect. I personally spend my time on RuneScape socializing with my clan while I play my Agility game. Aasiwat runs his own clan as well. To claim that to play RuneScape a lot would get you thrown out of social circles is ridiculous, as socializing in any way is still socializing. Irl is not any more "healthier" than over a pixelated game. In fact, I find that people can be more open when talking online than irl.

Now how about the stress aspect? If you want to go work a 9-5 job and take care of kids, I'm sure your life would be quite a paradise. Most people hate their jobs, and with a boss constantly ordering you to do this/do that while you try to do it without messing up and pleasing them(brown nosing when forced to maintain your job is fun, right?) is hardly going to make you not have stress moments sometimes. Playing RuneScape CASUALLY(yes, even almost all top players are actually relaxed when doing it, not uptight about being ubermegaproefficient) won't generate a lot of stress, if any.

As I see it, the proposed "normal life" is less healthy than a "RuneScape" life. :P

Yes that was semi sarcastic but still legitimate especially in clans and such you can build long lasting good friendships there

A lot of these reasons are very self-centered. I think you can't argue about someone's personal preferences and desires, but you can argue about their role in society. Yes, you can end up with a crappy job making minimal wage, but there is always potential that if you have goals, like you do in this game, and apply yourself you can do something that is not just ordinary. Yes it is highly unlikely, but it never hurts to give it a chance. This drive and motivation that the top players exhibit in the game is special. If they find something they enjoy outside this game and use apply drive, they can make a dent on this world. Again this all hypothetical, but I just feel that everyone that has promise, should not be scared to find out if they can achieve their potential by playing a game and not concerning themselves with stuff that truly matters.

Side Note: I personally enjoy watching this race, and I agree everything in life should not be serious. Runescape is not a life focus, it should be a relaxing break like some of the people above have said.
