enfield
Personal efficiency needs 2 units to determine while crude efficiency only needs 1 (for example xp/hour and actions/hour for personal efficiency, and xp/hour for crude efficiency). xp/action is a nice unit. together with time/action it could also be used to determine personal efficiency. I don't really think the concepts can be merged in a satisfactory way..
Stev
People just need to remember that rs is purely meant for entertainment purposes and should never get in the way of rl things and like people often say you should maximize fun. Some people may judge you on your training methods, but in the end it should just be about you having fun with your friends on the game, and who cares what some e-troll thinks.I agree... To an extent. As I said earlier - the most efficient training methods are often the most boring which require the most attention and are least AFKable. Majority of the times, these methods are not by any means 'fun'. However! What is wrong with training and grinding for faster XP, enduring hours of boring XP gains, so that you can get to the fun stuff more quickly? Just my thoughts. :P. Capo_di_Capi
When it comes down to it, I think there's only one definition of efficiency. Efficiency = receiving the most output from the least input. Outputs: Xp, enjoymentInputs: Time, effort Stick to Xp and Time, the only measurable values. We all agree that we cannot measure fun, nor can we measure effort: APM doesn't work (your alching example), nor does Xp/A. I quote you: "Xp/A shows how much you receive divided by the amount of effort put it." So you're trying to measure effort by a formula with the 'A' as effort. Good luck solving that ;). I don't think effort should be described in 'actions', but more in 'level of focus' or 'complication'. Effort means using your brain, not necessarily clicking a lot. As RS is a grind, focus/complication/'using your brain' should be seen as timing ticks (Arctic Pines splitting) or thinking out the best scenario (Dungeoneering, Flash Powder). But even if we would define 'effort' as 'complication', it's (close to) impossible to measure. So I figure it would be best to define effort simply as input/effort as in time/xp. Cutting Ivys I would say is indeed practibility, not so much efficiency. Yes it is efficiency in Dragoneance's life, but not in his RS career. We should stick to the RS career, not because I don't care about Dragonseance's life, but because 'efficiency', as complicated as it is, should be generalized. People just need to remember that rs is purely meant for entertainment purposes and should never get in the way of rl things and like people often say you should maximize fun. Some people may judge you on your training methods, but in the end it should just be about you having fun with your friends on the game, and who cares what some e-troll thinks. You're contradicting yourself. For some people RS is a real life-thing; voluntarily.
ProtoRob
I disagree, just because you can't put exact numbers on things like fun and effort, doesn't mean it's not possible to discuss them. Quantifiable efficiency rates are clearly not the only form of efficiency accepted.

Quantifiable efficiency rates are clearly not the only form of efficiency accepted. You could say, "X method is the most efficient, but only if you find it fun." But you could also say that about Y method. The same goes for Z method, ad nauseam. It's just easier to leave it at what we can measure and let people decide what they want to do based on what only they can measure.

Majority of the times, these methods are not by any means 'fun'. However! What is wrong with training and grinding for faster XP, enduring hours of boring XP gains, so that you can get to the fun stuff more quickly? Just my thoughts. :P.I suppose it would depend on the method and what said player finds fun. Personally I'd rather grind something for 5hrs, then do something fun for 10hrs to reach the same goal. Then again I would rather do something fun for 200 hours then grind for 100 hours. So for me it would just depend on how far my goal is. Some people can grind day after day, others like me don't really have the attention span and will end up just bank standing for the same amount of time that we could've been training. I got around 300 days played and should have got the comp cape 200 days played ago, if I played efficiently. Also I actually find non-afk methods more enjoyable, but thats just because if I try watching a movie or playing another game or hw while woodcutting Ivy, Ill forget about rs and just focus on the main priority. There's nothing wrong with doing boring methods, but I just think some people have different limits of how much they can handle them. Idk I just treat rs as any other game, just I tend to play it a lot more because I find it more enjoyable and not finished with it. Anyways if rs was someones life, still doesn't mean they shouldn't have fun on the game/do whatever methods they enjoy. In the end it's their account and no-one elses. enfield
^^ that's true for "fun" (i really don't think this variable has any place in efficiency discussion..) but not for effort. That we can quantify fairly well - with actions. While no one will dispute xp/h alone approximates what's most efficient for one to do fairly well (given individual circumstances), including actions/h would allow one to determine what's most efficient for them even more accurately. of course if no one can agree on how to measure actions/h for various things, or if no one wants to, then that's okay and efficiency will forever be talked about in terms of xp/h. But that doesn't invalidate the fact that in principle measuring actions/h for things could be done (i think) and would benefit efficiency discussion. ProtoRob
Don't so much mean that fun should be counted towards efficiency, but good utilisation of time should. Time where you otherwise would have been gaining 0 xp is efficiently spent at ivy instead.

Bojack
Hmmm i usually wait a few days before coming to read this thread just so i can read a large amount all at once. Unfortunately this week efficiency needed to be redefined again and i just skipped over the last like 3 pages Personally im all for discussions about methods that gain you the most xp/hr (ie. arctic pines > ivy) but these discussions are not really about that anymore, you guys are going to deep into this concept

I used to be able to make that with my calculator but I can't make it until people find out the new effigy formula. Some cases, for people that isn't gaining effigys, you can calculate if you know the xp rates. Suomi played 60 hours last 7 days.Jake played 46 hours last 7 days. rudes7
I ivy when i absolutely cannot pay attention, for example in class. Today is a Monday and a prime example of the benefits of ivy (on a phone), I had class from 1:35 pm to 9:00 pm, got a 6hr log in that time I cut so much ivy, better than the past 2 months when i didn't even log in on Mondays. Pretty sure rs isn't playable on a phone? Or is there something I'm missing
Platinum_Myr
Pretty sure rs isn't playable on a phone? Or is there something I'm missing You just need a smart phone with java enabled. Not sure it would work great. but fairly sure it could be done... So basically you are just sending click coordinates and recieve images ^^ Therefore any smartish phone can do it.
