What ever happened to inidividuals desiring items for their own merit; not taking into consideration what might impress others?

Food for thought.

MMORPGs happened

MMORPGs happened

More like basic human nature happened.

The fundamental driving force of our consumerist society is the fact we like to look good* to others while also displaying some personality.

It's why we decorate our homes, it's why most families will have 'good' plates and 'good' cutlery stashed somewhere that only comes out when guests arrive.

It's why we spend millions a year on cosmetics to make our skin and hair look good.

It's why we spend millions on clothes to make ourselves look good.

It's why we go to gyms and fund the fad diet industry to get good bodies.

*Good being highly subjective here as it depends on lifestyle choices etc. Eg what looks good to a materialist and a naturalist aren't the same

That is true. I was more-so referring to the MMO part of Runescape, in comparison to single player RPGs with my post.

Dunno if anyone still needed confirmation, but I had Ely as "rare" a day ago and now

2vj8kcn.png

Obviously I didn't get it but this at least proves it's not super rare only.

I'd rage so hard if I got super rare.

Got my first 'rare' spin today. It was a lamp and on a f2p account, but still.

120320111705.png

I try to spin on all my accounts in the hope of a unique super rare, but no luck yet.

Out of 6 spins so far today, I've seen 3 tattoos though :).

I would actually be really annoyed with coins/huge lamp reward :P, would much rather get something that could show off.

And just what would you "show off"? Your dumb luck?

It is no different than "showing off" your wealth by buying trimmed armor. To be honest though, I'd be more impressed by someone who got the "Lucky Divine Spiritshield" than a trimmed completionist cape.

What ever happened to inidividuals desiring items for their own merit; not taking into consideration what might impress others?

Food for thought.

Because personally, I ascribe more value to the "impressing" factor then I do to the simple "cool" factor. That is why I strive to be the best. I'd rather show how much better I am then most people, then simply use an item I might find slightly more attractive.

So you have to subscribe right away to claim the item, or else it's lost? How does that work anyway?

You can't spin again until the item is claimed or discarded. It seems to stay there until you either claim or discard.

Meh. Everyone does this. The only difference is some people deny that they do it, ironically, because it's more impressive to pretend not to care.

And that's not a baseless generalization, it's literally in your genes.

I should have added that this was simply in video games. I play them because I enjoy the competitive aspect, as well as the progression aspect. I play to become better, and as a result I normally am better then the vast majority of players in whatever game I play. I am not above admitting this. That is part of how I have fun in a video game. Heck, others admit it too. " I am not below admitting that I like to have people oogle at my achievements, titles, and gear." QUOTE from a friend of mine on a different forum.

That being said, to an extent I balance personal enjoyment against being the in the top 99.5% (instead of being in the top 95%). I raid with my current guild because I think they are amazing and fun. I trained slayer in RS past 99 while leaving hunting at 70 because I found hunting useless (and boring) and slayer was enjoyable. I could have had max cape by the time I quit, but I enjoyed certain things more then others.

This is not to negate my previous statement: I wish to be the best, or amongst the best, but I still balance this with a certain level of what I find enjoyable.

What I don't understand is why people chose to be WORSE then they could. I understand not doing something because you dislike it, but I find people doing the same activity as me in an inferior way, when they have the capability to do it at the same level, mind boggling. I'm not talking about AFK training (ivy) v something faster but more attention based (teaks or w/e it is now). Im talking about things like not using potions when slaying, or using a godsword, or w/e. Maybe they find that fun? IDK, perhaps. I just find it incomprehensible.

A bit off topic, but germane to the quoted section of the discourse.

I think that it is a cheap way to try and make people go P2P because Jagex allows to win rewards that they need to subscribe to receive, but personally I think that it is a nice way to supplement my cash stack with a couple of thousand gp every day.

I don't know if naming names is allowed in a positive sense, but I saw this on the RSOF and decided to share: A player named 'mefrog' got a lucky Divine from the SoF. It's too far down his RSS feed to see on his adventurers log, but it's on the long version.

Can be seen here: http://services.runescape.com/m=adventurers-log/g=runescape/rssfeed?searchName=mefrog

Guess they do actually exist :o

I love the way he starts steadily training his prayer to 75 after that ...

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.
