Clooth
Thanks for your hard work and determination! Is there any legal action you can take against the two major attacks to our site? We are doing what we can, but major decision is if we wish to spend all our next years web maintenance and upgrades to pay some lawyer and not even be sure he will win a case :(, when someone piss us enough we move all we can, and in end they finish in hands of law but it is long process and there is a way too low or better to say no help from who have to help sites like ours. Could this be related to the person who deleted the forum? If it's not that person then I wouldn't put it past [Edited by admin] to hire someone, [Edited by admin] is rather shifty as well, if you do find out who it is and they're in the US you can report them to the police for disorderly internet conduct. * My opinion and not the opinion of any Tip.it staff, some people on other forums will take that the wrong way Pfft, I'm not shifty. :/ Best regards,Nico
Kimberly
Okay, who on tip.it ticked someone off in Anon? Joking aside, thanks to the staff for keeping the forums and site alive. Lordjake
I wouldn't put it past one of the other fan forums to try something lame like this :-# glad to see the tip.it crew handled the problem
mario_sunny
Anyone else find it sad how some idiot decided to attack a runescape fan site? I mean, even if this person did have something against tip.it, it really it quite childish and stupid to attack the site. By popular demand, this signature is back- however I currently do not have a blog up at the moment and if I did I wouldn't update it. Sorry, the sig links to nowhere :( . D. V. Devnull
I am extremely glad to see that Tip.It's Staff figured out what is happening, and that all of you are working on defeating it. Finally, less image load fails!!! BTW, are there any further details that Tip.It's Staff wouldn't mind sharing with their community about what's going on, such as how the DDOS is being executed against all of us? :-s ~D. V. Devnull and normally with a cool mind.(Warning: This user can be VERY confusing to some people... And talks in 3rd person for the timebeing due to how insane they are... Sometimes even to themself.)
MageUK
BTW, are there any further details that Tip.It's Staff wouldn't mind sharing with their community about what's going on, such as how the DDOS is being executed against all of us? :-s What do you mean? It's a DDoS, we don't know who's attacking us nor do we have the means to find out without gaining access to the virus that is making the PCs vulnerable. It was our web server, not forum server that was being targeted, and was basically causing everything to run more slowly that usual on the website side of things. There's no how to it really it's just happening.

gtacrackhead
I thought I was the only one experiencing this problem. I was considering using different websites to do my runescaping in. deejay_hr
Well, I'll just quote what I recently wrote on the subject of Ddos attacks. Let me lend a little bit of my knowledge. Basically, the infamous viruses and trojans you try to avoid all have a purpose. Nowadays, it's rare to see a virus whose purpose is to destroy your computer. Most viruses have one of the two or three most common roles. A lot of them are used to harness the resources of the infected computer. You will probably not be aware of it, and that's why it's important to have firewalls, and active scan anti virus software. These resources can be used for anything from sending mass spam mails under fake addresses, or to be incorporated into a botnet, which I will explain soon. Other purposes include advertising, where the virus changes your preferences, for example, changing your homepage, which forces you to see what they want you to see, like cheap viagra or making free money online (both are scams btw). If you try to change it back to normal, the virus will continue doing it's job, and annoying you like hell, until you remove it. Some viruses are used to gather vital information, but those are rarely used on normal computers, since people don't usually have valuable data. Therefore, telling you about them would be pointless. :P And then in the end, there are the viruses of doom, their sole purpose is to damage your computer as much as possible. You'll definitely be aware of them. Once you set that bomb off, it's very hard to stop the explosion, so avoid opening files from the internet that you aren't sure of at all cost. Be sure to scan them with your antivirus, you should have an option in the right click menu when you want to open them. Now, I wrote all this cause I'm bored, but what really interests us are botnets. A botnet is a net of infected computers that are not protected enough to detect the virus they're infected with. The virus usually masks itself as an important system file, or something that doesn't seem suspicious. The more popular options are incorporating the virus into the system32 file which is vital to the operating system, or faking an MSN file, because no one suspects MSN to be a virus (those are just some versions I've had experience with, not the only versions there are). Using this disguise, it takes up a small part of your system resources, which doesn't affect your computers ability to do whatever it is you need it to do. Despite all the warning and information, there's still a lot of people who simply think that a good antivirus isn't so important, and they leave their computers unprotected. Such infected computers are then incorporated into a botnet, and used for malicious purposes. What sucks about botnets is that you don't need to know a lot to use one. There's software and stuff that makes it possible for complete hacking newbies to do a lot of damage. It's quite possible that some kid decided he hates Tip.it and got his smart friend to show him how to do it, and now we've got Tip.it under attack. It's also possible, and definitely more probable that this is being done by an expert, who knows what he's doing. Using all the infected computers he has in his botnet, he blocks Tip.its website, by telling all the computers to access the page. The people who own the infected computers wouldn't know it, because you can use the shell of Internet Explorer to access the internet without opening Internet Explorer. That's how the Runescape downloadable client works, except this is invisible. Tip.it can only let a set number of people enter the page at a certain time to avoid a server crash. The infected computers flood the webpage, and normal users have to wait to be able to view the page. However, internet browsers also have a set time they wait before they decide the webpage is inaccessible. That's why you don't get to see the page easily as usual. The problem here is the fact that there's no way of finding the source of these attacks. Every computer has it's own IP address and the attacks come from different computers. Also, you can't just ban them all because Tip.it users also try to connect all the time, and you'd be banning them as well. There's no way to know who's a bot, and who's a real user. Therefore, the only solution is somehow discovering the culprit, which is not very likely, or to hope that he/she will stop attacking. If the identity of that person is found, they can be sued, and with enough evidence, they'd be in a lot of trouble. I've seen people do years in jail for this, and paying huge fines. However, I doubt we'll find out who it is for sure. I hope this helps you in understanding what exactly our staff is fighting against. Need a countdown?
