And no matter who you are, much of it is going to consist of depression, anxiety, boredom, and grief.. It is for this reason that I feel that one should take each and every opportunity to experience even a moment's worth of pleasure, and savor it. Honestly, what more do we have to look forward to?

I remember when I was in elementary school and they were warning us about the dangers of drugs, one of their favorite slogans was "Drugs may not kill you, but they will take your life." That quote has always stuck with me, and these days I can't help but wonder what "life" they were referring to. Working all day long and coming home to watch television before going to bed? Yeah, I wouldn't want a series of intensely euphoric drug experiences to get in the way of that!

Really though, life is a joke, and it's often quite brutal even for a spoiled, sheltered little boy like so many in this world. Why not indulge indiscriminately? Why strive for longevity? What do we even have that's worthy of prolonging?

Is the pursuit of euphoria not everyones sole reason of living? You could relate this to hedonism if you like, it is what I am, a hedonist.

Why strive for longevity?

We're built to strive for longevity and to procreate. But that's no answer to the "why" question. Imo there is no "why". My question is, does there need to be a "why?"?

I think you just gotta find your niche. Some prefer sports. Some prefer art. If they liked those things better, they have no need to decrease their lifespan by doing drugs because they'd just be losing out on football time. Like I just said on another thread - to each his own.

Personally though, I think drug experiences are enlightening.

I for one have enjoyed life. A few sticky moments but hardly anything to call dark or dreary. Certainly no need to use narcotics or alcohol to make myself feel better.

Life is short as hell. Even if you're 15, assuming you'll have an extremely long life up to a hundred years old, you've already lived 15% of your life and barely experienced anything (in the broad concept) yet.

Once in a while forget about school and work and try to live. Do something you truly enjoy. Be with your significant other. Party. Get into a car race. Throw a big party.. Anything, depending on your personality.

Sadly, you do need money to do things in life you want to, but if you put your mind to it at a young age, you can save up money even by regular work. Just by saving up $2k a year with summer jobs from ages 16-21 (ridiculously easy, just work summer jobs) you'll already have $10k which goes a long way for a pretty nice car, multiple vacations etc.. Save up more $ per year and you can even have your own house or business while still being very young.

Hedonism is a short sighted life view but you have to indulge sometimes. Growing old and realizing how badly you want to be young again to do things.. Is one of the most dreadful feelings and thoughts I can think of..

And if you think in a historical sense life is really really really short

So either you should make yourself known or you make yourself known to yourself (that is, you get the best out of your life, what you think is best) :)

[insert birds flying in a circle here]

Yes, that sig was annoying.

First off, respect :P

Yeah man life is for living, the only thing you really have are you emotions and memories. I try and enjoy everything I HAVE to do (ie school) and try to make the most out of every spare moment. Everyone needs time to relax but its far too easy to spend too much or all of your time 'relaxing'. Since this is on an RS board I have to refer to Runescape, which I used to play. I proballly wasted (thats right wasted) two years at least on RS, all it got me was depression and laziness lol. Of course I enjoyed it when I got a level or, once, a 99, but overall I found RS to be the biggest waste of time and life I could find. A lot of people say that they find it relaxing but I always wonder, do you really find it relaxing? If you do then fairplay to you cos i only really had 'fun' on RS when i got a good level or a nice item both of which took, comparatively, far too long. Looking back with heinsight I do wish I hadn't started. I mean for 99 fletching i reckon i wasted maybe 120+ hours for comparatively very little reward. Since quitting RS ive taken up guitar, started mixing, broadened my views and knowledge through books, taken up bass, started poi, started skateboarding again.. i mean, i could have speant the last 3 years playing rs and gotten a pretty impressive account, but when you get bored of RS(which is inevitable) would that time have been worht it? I find that spending my time relaxing on real things makes life seem a lot more worth living, it also makes time seem slower, your memories arnt just a blur of school and runescape.

I mean to really make the most of life you should try and experience as much as you can and i feel that for many people computer games and tv get in the way. i agree with you about drugs aswell lol. ive had a lot of very funny nights and been to loads few random places with friends since stopping rs.. i spend money on gigs or festivals instead of paying my membership(well 33 pounds of it lol) and have a lot better memories. ive got pretty preechy i know but im just trying to explain that at least to some of a you (i know a lot of you might not even play lol ) runescape is killing your time and your health lol ;p.

Lifes about living and thats excactly what I feel im doing, i figure that im going to spend my younger years (until nearly 30 maybe) experiencing as much as i can, going backpacking by myself, cycling to somewhere like spain or somethin, and acheive as much as i can. i now feel that future day to day life is not going to be the same or as comfortable as it is now, oils running out, climates changing quite rapidly, the population is STILL growing at a ridiculous rate, demand for resources we don't have is still skyrocketing.. i just feel that life is short and can be lost in the blink of an eye, which is why i want to spend as much of my time as possible exploring and learning :)

i really agree with you on this one, and now that you've realised that for yourself you can live life for yourself and try and enjoy it as much as you can for what it is :). i think a lot of people forget how short life is and lose time(it goes quicker and quicker) and don't get what they want out of it and maybe thats what brings ona mid life crisis

Oh yah, what hendoism? lol

EDIT: just saw some posts, henodism sounds kinda like what im going for, just experiences and fun, screw the future, you dont live in the future ;P. obviously you still have to thinka bit about it but for the majority i reckon you should just live in the now

but yeah, i dunno why i typed all that to be honest lol

Oh, I know. 42.

Now seriously, I think the saying "you reap what you sow" is pretty true in this case. You can really make your life worthwhile or miserable.

Some people feel happiness in getting drunk, some in art. But in the end, being happy is all we want(there are, however, exceptions) - we are "programmed" this way. I guess it's all about finding what you really want from life and getting it before it ends.

I guess that can be selfish, but we live only once, so let's enjoy it while we can.

I don't play anymore, but I'm grateful I played through the best RS times!

Life is short, considering that most of the users on this forum have lived 1/4 or 1/5 of their life so far. Still, life is meant for living, even if it is a pursuit of euphoria.

I like this thread; I enjoy philosophical questions and statements.

Every single New Years, I look back and say, "Wow. That was fast, where did all that time go?", when in reality, I did spend most of my time complaining about how slow the year went.

I keep telling myself to grasp every opportunity and all that, but I never end up doing that and it frustrates me. D:

Life may be short, but in that short life, you'll have so many experiences, that you can hardly call it short at all. Already now, at the age of 18, I've experienced so much joy and happiness, and so much grief. No one goes through life without painful moments, but do yourself a favour - learn from it. There is nothing that can happen to a single person, that is so hard or painful you don't learn something from it.

My 16th and partly 17th year of living were my worst - I was wondering how I could get old(er) if every day would go on like that.. Now I've had the best year of my life - this far.

Enjoy life, it's all you got, and it's so fantastic when you open your eyes to it!

Indeed, life is short, and humanity is going nowhere fast.

mankind has little to cling on to as they draw their dying breath. did their life matter at all, it would amuse me to beleive it did, but in all honesty, it didn't. I would like to think they feel a sense of utter freedom and release on the very moment of death. memories don't matter when you are dead, nor does experience, nor does knowledge, nothing matters.

in my eyes, nothing ever did.(don't let my negativity affect your opinion by the way, after all, its just an opinion)

Live the good life now.

But don't screw it up. Then your life may be even shorter.

What's the point of life?

I wish I knew a good Confucius quote for this, but I'll refer to Shakespeare (As You Like It, my school put it on last year  ).

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts."

Make an impact, play your part. Yes, finding joy is a great experience that is everyone should strive for, but it's rather short-lived. Your impact is eternal, no matter how big or small.

That said, I obviously wouldn't mind feeling happy once in a while. :P

Drugs are not the way to go.... You feel good for a few years then it all comes back to bite you in the [wagon]. Many of my relatives used to do drugs or still do, and it's ruined they're lives. They've grown distant from the whole family, they've got no money... nothing. An Uncle of mine was extremely good at playing the Piano, I mean professional level. He became an alcoholic after his wife left him...

Now he doesn't have any teeth and switches between various relatives houses to crash at. No money, no real friends, no nothing. Except regret.

If you want real happiness, you have to work first. You reap what you sow. If you work hard, and you establish a basis for the future, that's just what you'll get. A future. You gotta do something first to become happy.

If you take drugs, you only hurt yourself and your family in the long run. The fact that you describe life as watching tv and working tells me you don't know how good you have it. I don't have tv, and I'm lucky I still have internet. My family can barely afford the heating for the house. I'd give practically anything to move my right arm again. (Not going into details.) It pisses me off when people tell me that their life sucks when they have more than me and then some. I think my life is pretty damn good, and If I have a problem, I work it out.

Moral of the story: If you have problems, work to fix them. Even if you fail, it's better to try than to give up and then take a selfish route and doing things like drugs. That's just setting yourself up for more failure.

Drugs=Fail.

Life ain't short kid- it's the longest thing ya do.

But it's also short. Yet, long.

I think it can be both.

I guess I'm a little hedonistic. More along the lines of just enjoying as much as you can instead of raping yourself in the face with fun, but ... Close.

I'm tired of the status quo, though. I learned what it is today, and I realized how my status quo is and should remain the opposite of an average person's. I don't want to have to work for decades and then decide to take a vacation to the Bahamas that I can't enjoy. Life's shortly long, and longly short. I'm just gonna keep on truckin'.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

I always get tired of people who ask what the point of living is. I look at it this way. A "short" life does not mean "bad" life. You can make so much of what time you have on this planet, but you can't just sit on your [wagon] and do drugs and hope someday the magical fun fairy will drop happiness into your lap. There's so many more ways to live a satisfying life, and they're considerably more healthy. Of course you'll have bad times, but that's part of life. What you have to do is take the bad head on and overcome it, not give up when you see bad times. Look at that one Olympic runner who had both his legs amputated. He could have went all depressed and said, "OMG my legs are cut off I can never run ever again!" But he didn't. He decided to learn how to run with his prosthetics, and he can run faster than most people with both legs firmly intact can. Don't sit and whine how your live could be, stand up and make it how you want it to be.

If there is one thing I dread, it is old age. I go to my grandparents house, and at first it might seem great to be old. Assuming you've spent your entire life working, and saving up for retirement, you can just relax and spend your time doing what you want, without committing to anything. But the older I get, the more I realize that that is just an illusion. As you get old, your mind goes, and after 20 years of retirement you'll do nothing all day but yell at your wife because neither of you can hear each other, and watch TV.

drugs taking ur life is not about not working and going to school even if it seems like it

it will be a chain it will take over ur life compltley and u will be a slave to the drugs and ur need for them...thats what they mean

(the softer drugs are not this [cabbage] but they often lead to stronger stuff)

tl;dr. After all, life is short.

But if you think life is so pointless, where you'll simply "go to work, come home and watch tv before going to bed", then why don't you do something about it? Be one of those crazy 80 year old guys that climb several mountains a day despite multiple heart attacks and bears, only allowing yourself the luxury of a trip to the hospital once you've climbed the Devil's Thumb. And then hanglide off of it.

Conquer Canada. Explore where there be dragons. Hell, just go hiking every once in a while or join some local sports team. Point is, go do something you think is worth that can give your life meaning.
