Using windows 8 as my main operating system now. It's really similar to 7, with the exception of metro.

Meh I'm going to stay with Win7 until I'm forced to go up, so for the first time it looks like I'm going to be skipping a Microsoft OS. Win 8 will stay in virtual machine.

You'd think it'd be easy to understand why using a machete or katana to kill zombies is an awful idea but I've had to explain how hard it is to cut through flesh, muscle, and bone in one try way too many times...

This is one of the reasons I dislike talking about the zombie genre with other friends because my way of thinking sees numerous holes in the debating and I won't take part in regards that I would end up emotionally destroying someone. You could explain how melee weapons like those would suck in a zombie attack because you'd have to deal with an entire hoard up and close, and you're more likely to join their numbers after one or two kills.

 

Do they use the "It's just -insert genre-" or "It's a fictional setting" excuse to dismiss your arguments by chance?

Depends on how you define "few". Besides, just wait a week and most will die from gases building up and dehydration removing almost all liquid in their bodies from being in the sun/heat for too long. Gets rid of the hoard and you can focus more on the looting for survival bit.

 

Then again, that time frame wouldn't completely finish off a nation since the movies makes the government rather incompetent or unlucky when it comes to containing the virus. It's almost always caused by a group or them, so the source is usually easy to find.

Remember that not even executioners before the guillotine was created could hack off a head with a giant axe perfectly every time. Anyways you could only cut through so many zombies before the blade is coated in a thick layer of blood and zombie bits. Then the blade will eventually get dull and will require upkeep that takes up time you could be using to look for supplies or hunting.

Lol, I never even get to that part when trying to explain it.

 

The Katana in particular is actually about the worst possible bladed weapon you could choose that's more than a foot long. They are ridiculously fragile and high maintenance so if you don't care for the blade exactly right the thing won't be able to cut jack shit by the next day (assuming it doesn't snap a few times first).

 

The other problem with swords in general is that the normal assumption is bodily fluids transmit the infection, so zombie blood on your open wound is just as fatal as a bite. Even a pole arm (getting to them in a second) will probably manage to get blood on you.

 

As for the machete, again it needs to be cared for because your trying to get it through a spinal column, not bushes. This is probably on par with trying to swing a machete through a 4-5 inch tree trunk.

 

And yeah, just about any weapon short of a bladed pole arm is going to take MANY swings to decapitate a human (including an axe), and even for a pole arm, this only works if the body/neck is braced against something, otherwise your just going to knock them down (though this would leave them open to decapitation on the next swing since the ground is now your brace).

This is the best plan for a zombie apocalypse I've seen yet for its simplicity. You're not seeking glory or heroism at all, and you definitely don't sound like the ones who just want it to happen to loot and kill things since society can't shame or punish them for the behavior for awhile.

 

The ones more annoying than those people are those who are actually making plans. It seems silly to let everyone know you're prepping and collecting supplies since that means everyone will know who to go to/rob when things go down the drain.
