Squeal of Fortune + Buyable Spins

I was also going to complain massively about the credit card details being saved but it looks as though that might have been fixed? But if you still have to manually remove your card details that's a huge issue.

It has NOT been fixed.

[hide]ticketdetails.png[/hide]

Pressing the Buy Spins button in game takes you to a page asking you to select your country, then you're taken directly to that page with it looking like that. You press the Purchase button and that's it, you've just bought extra spins. No screen asking you to confirm or anything.

You need no details to do this, it doesn't even ask you for your password again or your security code on the card. So if your account gets hacked (or even if you leave it logged in at a friends house or whatever) they can press the buy spins button in game and then they're able to buy as many as they want with no further details.

I just tested it myself. You can click on "Manage Saved Cards" on that same page below your credit card details. You can then remove your credit card. I did that, logged back in, tried it again, and my card details were no longer there.

Yup, but how many people are going to do that? Not too many I imagine. So it's still a huge issue and needs fixing.

Merci; you have no idea how much more exposure a Times issue gets compared to a forum thread.

Last week, for example, we saw 15k hits... I know you might think forum threads get similar amouts (this one is already over 5k), but don't forget that an article is but one post, not *checks* 174 by now...

This is due to a lot of readers that simply don't use the forums...

Then post a synopsis here and the full article on sunday...

That was my idea, but this thread pretty much IS the synopsis...

I dont wanna give everything away just yet, but I think I stumbled upon a crucial bit of insight in this whole fiasco...

There was once a time that I'd be surprised by this, but it no longer does. That's kind of sad, but unfortunately there are still aspects of the game I enjoy so I will keep playing while Jagex cheapens the game.

Everyone buying spins is just encouraging them, since they know that people will.

To be honest, when I read the news article about buying spins, I assumed using gp, but of course that wouldn't benefit them.

I'm really disappointed in you guys that are actually buying the spins. I appreciate the covering of the update, but you're just giving jagex the money that they're destroying their game for.

If everyone decided to just not buy spins (I can see it's going to be seen as dishonorable anyway, much like buying RSGP) then jagex would be made to look like fools and the game would remain fair regardless of income, the thing that jagex has bragged about for a decade. (Although in hindsight, F2P vs membership fees kinda proved that wrong already.)

Seriously though. Do not spend $100s on runescape. Find a better game, of use it on your psychiatrists fees, if you were actually considering spending money on runescape.

So what's the best thing you can get on the squeal... A divine? and the worst a bronze arrow right? The difference in prize then is between 532 million, and 10gp. At current RWT (yes i know it's against the rules but I picked a random website for the figure) thats a prize of between $516 and $0.0000097 equivalent value. A casino paying out 1 cent on each play is far more generous than Jagex is being. People paying $20 for spins are not going to count winning bronze arrows as "wins" no matter what those mods say.

Gambling in RS. Only OK if Jagex does it. With real money. For virtual goods that you don't own.

I'd just like to say that although I don't approve of this update, the real harm is probably minimal. To level a skill from 80-99 using squeal costs ~$2,000 USD. The super-rare items are also untradeable, and well, super-rare (probably something like 1/1000 if not rarer). Unless someone has thousands of dollars lying around to spend on Runescape (which I somehow doubt), there will be no noticeable "unfair" inflation in either hiscore ranks or wealth from anyone. At most, people will buy some spins just to try it out, and once they find out the reward/$ ratio isn't what they hoped to be, it will just be business as usual.

Besides, knowing Jagex they will probably put the money to good use. The CEO mentioned that they wanted to get off the outdated Java platform, onto something more efficient, powerful and portable, and the money could very well be going towards that.

You'd actually be surprised. Sure maybe not many people will blow $2000 all at once, but over a few months... a lot more will than you might expect. Look at Zynga and Neopets. People spend thousands of dollars buying virtual items on those sites.. and they're stupid things like cosmetic clothing. When I played several years ago, loads of people had spent over $500.

And what's even worse, on RuneScape credit card details are stored. So say you have a 13 year old kid. His parents are using their credit card to pay for his membership. He can buy a thousand dollars worth of spins without asking his parents because his credit card details are already fully typed in.

Besides, knowing Jagex they will probably put the money to good use. The CEO mentioned that they wanted to get off the outdated Java platform, onto something more efficient, powerful and portable, and the money could very well be going towards that.

Just curious as to where that was stated? I know that Jagex wants to expand onto other platforms but I always thought they liked the Java platform. They like that it's easily accessible to everyone.

I apologize for not being able to find a direct link at the moment, but I believe I read it a while ago; they're looking into making an independent client for RS like WoW or Guild Wars (and most other MMOs). Expanding onto other platforms like consoles would also necessitate a more portable coding language, and Java in a general industry sense is quite outdated.

Hm I never read about them making a client like WoW. Jagex is all about accessibility so I don't really see that happening. I know they were interested in expanding to consoles but that was expanding rather than replacing (so the Java game would still exist). And they didn't end up going through with it because everyone they talked to wanted it to be exclusive to their console or something but Jagex wanted it available across all consoles.

Furthermore, Jagex's newer games are also using the same Java platform so it doesn't seem like that's something they're trying to get away from. Transformers Universe (to be released later this year) will use the Java platform and Stellar Dawn was going to use it before it was "paused."

Exactly what I thought. Then I logged in.

I didn't want to believe they'd become this pathetic, but it's really hard for me not to think this now.

What amazes me more is the people actually wasting their money on this. There are so many other things you could spend 20$ on and get so much more from.

I'm boycotting the buying. I feel giving 20$ to a guy on the street would be worth more than buying a few extra spins.

If its real and they are starting micro transactions couldn't they at least have put in an option to buy the rare non lucky items from the wheel instead of just buying a few thousand spins in order to get them. Since most of the people who buy the spins will do it for buying xp instead of for the rare rewards.

As a child I saw Tarzan almost naked, Cinderella arrived home from a party after midnight, Pinocchio told lies, Aladin was a thief, Batman drove over 200 miles an hour, Snow White lived in a house with seven men, Popeye smoked a pipe and had tattoos, Pac man ran around to digital music while eating pills that enhanced his performance, and Shaggy and Scooby were mystery solving hippies who always had the munchies. Dear God Jagex. I can't believe I ever loved you ;_;

Now I'm not all 'rah rah I miss the good old days'. I accept that RuneScape has changed and that if I ever go back it's going to be radically different... but I can't believe Jagex would do something like this. Well... I guess I can. It's not *that* surprising that they'd sell themselves out like this. It's just pathetic imo.

I think actually buying the spins is fairly stupid as well, no way in hell would I spend money on spins. I can't blame the people buying them trying to get an advantage though. This isn't like botting or RWT or even bug abuse, Jagex put this out there and if you want to go ahead and pay for them then fill your boots.
