Squeal of Fortune + Buyable Spins

 So what's the say that the $200.00 I pay to get items equals to the $200.00 someone else pays and the items they get? If I pay $200.00 and get like buckets and cabbages, while the other guy gets a divine and tattoo, then there's no equality in that. How much would I have to spend before it's considered equal with the other guy?

Honestly, I would've been fine with just the monster drops, the weekly events, etc. for getting the extra spins. But paying for them? No thank you. Like many have pointed out already, you have the potential to literally just buy your experience lamps now for levels. So I am not very pleased with this updated, to put it very politely. I'll reserve my more angry comments in private. I will not be participating in such a program that is borderline gambling (and I say borderline because of all the technicalities, even though I personally think it's 100% gambling), even if they change the security settings.

To the parents and guardians: Do not give your children your credit card/debit card without watching what is it they're actually using it for. Make sure you place your card in a place where they cannot access it afterwards. Keep track of the purchases made on your card(s)!

And to the general population: Do not save credit card/debit card details! You definitely don't want to be charged $200.00 in a day for something that you did not want to purchase!

I'm certain that JaGEx incurs no net loss with players quitting. Players willing to buy these will cover those lost memberships. If anything, all they did was get rid of those early who would've quit when J releases direct item buying. In a way it's like they've transferred your collective loyalty into a smaller group of players that are unlikely to quit anytime soon because they'll continually invest more currency into their accounts. On another hand, there are those that've paid using larger subscription packages that J has been pushing more in recent times whose quitting will matter even less.

Of course, I understand that some people are legitimately concerned with security issues than "punishing" JaGEx. I happen to think however that those people are in the minority.

I'll still remain, although I will be transferring to my "auxiliary" membership queued from when I went with a friend to get green skin since there's no refunds. Because of that my membership's end will probably coincide with finals anyway...

Make Nex drops buyable with real money because they're too hard too get for the average player...I bet this will be an update in less than a year and then they'll lower the xp required for 99 down to about a million

There's actually plenty of people buying massive amounts of spins out there already..on rsof, youtube, and now here....

From what I can guesstimate, 225-300 spins (usd $60-80) will net you about 1 mil xp, of which about half you can choose. You can easily spin it and rub all the lamps in about 30 mins. So there is really immense amount of xp you can buy from this if you got the funds... In addition to the chance of getting random lucky item, which as it seems now, is absolutely horrible - none of the 2k ish spins people bought contained any unique/lucky item at all... Best is a rune plate.

So much disgusting money jagex is making off this already...even if half of runescape legit players quit today, jagex still made enough cash to cover its ass for probably months from spins and goldfarmers. They'd rather make money off a very small portion of rich players who would buy any crap offered by jagex and cheaters/goldfarmers rather than off its younger, poorer players. This is the hallmark of an evil company.

I would prefer even to fail with honor than to win by cheating - Sophocles

Second most atrocious update of this year (effigy nerf being #1 ofc).

So they hold me to their rules but they won't do the same since they can profit off of it. [bleep]ing hypocrites.

HAHA YOU THINK THOSE ARE SEPERATE UPDATES LOL *trollface*

The only way I could tolerate this in a game would be if the game were completely free. I know I'm overly optimistic here, but I think it would be a nice surprise should Jagex decide to make the whole game F2P and be able to live on the profits just from the selling of squeel of fortune spins. I'm not sure whether I'd still want to play RuneScape like that however, as I'm strongly against real-world money influencing a game. It's part of what kept me at RuneScape since 2002...

I find it funny how they have told us this would never happen, and that they have been so hard on gambling in game, this is most definitely gambling, that 50gp is as good as nothing, using a loop hole.. low...

Hold on a second, I just thought of something. I'm not so sure we can bring this up without incurring the wrath of other industries, notably TCG like Magic. I mean think about it, when you buy a pack of cards there's no guarantee that what you'll get will be of equal value to the money spent, they might all be worthless or you could have gotten something worth a lot of money. So in that way wouldn't we be considering something like the Pokemon Card game a form of gambling? Hell, that's more insidious since you can sell the cards for money back quickly and legally.

Derp. The TCG's are a GAME with a bonus loot chance. Big difference from gambling.

I was referring more to just opening the packs rather than playing the actual game itself. For example, I bought an old pack of Zendikar a few days ago for 3.99 and I get Scalding Tarns which is worth ~12 dollars, then I bought another one and I get a crappy rare worth .50 cents. In both cases I "won" something just like there is no "losing spot" on the wheel but there's clearly and element of luck and pseudo gambling to both. I'm just applying the logic we're creating here to the corporate world at large since a legal precedent will be set for what is and isn't gambling if the things we want come to fruition.

More than a day has passed and they still stick to their stupid logic in spite of the majority finding holes in it.

You know, none of this would have happened (the backlash) if Jagex didn't try to pretend like they had such a stern stance against any form of RWT.

JAGEx a la Animal Farm... Won't be surprised if they started changing their own rules discreetly like the pigs in the fairy-tale.

"RuneScape game items must only be exchanged for other items or services within the game. The exchanging of RuneScape game items for items, services or other benefits in other online games, for real-life money or items or for any other real-life benefits or services is not allowed."

-----------------> No player$ $hould u$e real-life money to buy item$, $ervice$ or other benefit$ in Rune$cape from other RWT website$ except from the official JAGEX web$ite.

"We dont want players to be able to buy their way to success in RuneScape. If we let players start doing this, it devalues RuneScape for others. We feel your status in real-life shouldnt affect your ability to be successful in RuneScape."

-----------------> All Rune$cape player$ are equal, but $ome Rune$cape player$ are more equal than other$, if you $how u$ the money. Teeheehee. Kthxbai.

It's good to see that they at least reply to the feedback on the forums.

As one of few, I am not massively negative about this update. I understand why Jagex have done it, and I will certainly not quit/rage because of this. But I think that this is enough now. No more micro transactions now, please, Jagex.

If they were just honest about it and released it as limited microtransactions, I would be ok with this. Since I don't play competitively, it doesn't affect me, and while I don't like Pay2win schemes, if Jagex decides they want that, fine with me.

This update however, is the biggest atrocity I've ever seen, due to multiple reasons:

1. They are putting everyone paying with a credit card at risk of losing real money when being hacked, and don't even CARE about it.

2. They're still claiming this isn't RWT, using shady definitions to evade the questions instead of just being honest to their players and saying: "Yeah, we changed our mind, we are introducing microtransactions"

3. They added a possibility to spend more money than the subscription fees without a warning beforehand so parents can remove their credit card details(In a way they're tricking their customers)

4. They're abusing gambling addictions to get money by offering tickets for the wheel instead of actual items

5. They're abusing children who do not realize they're spending real money or cannot grasp the value of the money they spend

Especially the last two points REALLY piss me off, because that's not just greedy, that's downright despicable and a disgusting behaviour for humans.

So bring back dicing. We'll give the loser 1GP. It's not gambling! You always win!

This pretty much. Can't believe Jagex are trying to defend their actions as 'it's not gambling'

The thing is, they're talking about gambling in the legal sense...and apparently this, together with the fact that the items are all virtual, apparently is enough to make this not fall under gamblin laws(Which is stupid imo, because it clearly IS gambling and also abuses gambling addictions)

That surprises me as well.

If you're a younger kid and your parents are paying for your membership with their credit/debit card, you can just log into your RuneScape account and make all these charges to your parents card? And Jagex evidently won't refund the money?

I also give a REALLY big eyeroll to the excuse that "this isn't gambling because technically every spin wins." Herpa derpa derpa.
